First Book in a New Mystery Series

This book was read by the author. Usually I am very wary of authors reading their own books. In this case, Cathy Ace did a good job getting all the sarcasm and nuisances of her writing out there perfectly.

To me this was a slightly shaky first book in a series. The best parts of the book are when the author is dealing with areas she knows well--Wales and Vancouver--places she is living or has lived. The trouble for me was that this is a destination mystery set in Nice, France. I know Nice very well and the "foodies" view of Nice misses the mark. The story could have been set anywhere--the place value of the setting was lost on me. I kept saying no no the character wouldn't have eaten there...they wouldn't have missed this or that. If you don't care about actualities and realities of Nice and the French Riviera then the book is entertaining.

Be forewarned --there is a great deal of talk about eating and food in the story. The character is always hungry. She also has the attitude of "if you don't have anything good to say about anyone come sit by to me"--this can be funny but also can be very taxing after awhile. All these quibbles aside I think the series has great potential

and I plan on listening to the next book.

Why?

The Mensa-Member-Genius heroine is in a delightful country for a handful of days & accepts a dinner invitation from a man she hasn't seen for years and completely despises. (Why?) At dinner with her host and several other guests she has never seen before, the host drops dead into his bowl of escargot, and she is immediately Chief Suspect. (Why?) Later, surrounded by the other suspects, a glass of beer appears out of nowhere when she is alone, so our Genius gulps it down. (Why?) When she subsequently wakes up in a pitch-black tunnel with a bad headache, she is groping her way out when she pauses briefly for a "Wakeful Dream" and presto! realizes the identity of the murderer, and also (gasp) that she herself is In Danger! (What?) While all of this goes on, she mutters (un)witty little asides to herself mentally. A thoroughly annoying heroine, equally unlikeable cast of characters, farcical plot. The synopsis was the only good thing about this book. Why, oh why, did I select it?

I love the book. It was a page turner. I got this in kindle form from book bub. I do not know why but dialogue and words are missing and the square symbol is put in either single or multiple times. It is a little aggravating to have to supply the missing words. This is the first book that I have had this happen and repeatedly.

Not worth the time spent reading it.

Perhaps it's because I have no history with these apparently well loved characters, but I didn't connect with this book. It wasn't particularly suspenseful nor did it have an intelligent ending. Speaking from a place of some experience (I have plenty of her books) I find that McCullough tends to be a bit hit and miss. This one I think she must have phoned in.

Sins of the Flesh by Colleen McCulloch

Colleen McCulloch always manages to churn out an amazing read and although I thought this book started out a bit slowly it soon gathered momentum to become an absolute page turner. Carmine Delmonico always gets his man or woman as the case may be.

A Phychiatrist/Neurosurgeon has become obsessed with a psychotic criminal whom she believed she has cured after many operations - obsessed with him or her own prowess?

Seven women have disappeared, believed murdered, leaving only a photograph of themselves. Where have they gone?

You'll love this book if you like mystery and action.

Don't Ever Miss a McCullough Book!

McCullough has written anything I haven't liked and respected for it's characters and story. Her Carmine Delmonico detective series rates in my top ten best of any of that genre I've read. Her writing has never devolved into a rehash of the same ole' thing and she never insults my intelligence. You will be engrossed in this one just as you will in any of her books whether set in a teeming American city or Ceasar"s brutally raw Rome (her Roman historical fiction series).

Enjoyable small town murder mystery.

About as realistic as "Death In Paradise" but sometimes that is what you want. I like the small town setting and the characters. The narrator is great.

another fun story

this is my second audio adventure with the Maggie Thorson character and my fourth overall, and I must admit to still loving her style of writing and the wit it uses. I find her comparable to other favourites of mine Rex Stout and Agatha Christie.

if you are looking for a hard edged, gritty and dark story you may have to look elsewhere, but this is the sort of murder filled romp with plenty charms and twists for those after something a little lighter. it helps that it has well rounded characters who are both likable and interesting. Though I will say I did find this a slightly weaker mystery than others, working out the killer quickly, but the twists kept my interest.

The narration is excellent, easy to listen to and a perfect match for the tone of the novel. I am already looking forward to the next time I enjoy the pairing of Sandra Balzo and Karen Savage for another Maggie Thorson mystery

Add Wagner to the list

Just finished reading Cold Tuscan Stone by David Wagner. It was a good read. Reminded me of Martin Walker whose Bruno, Chief of Police, lives in the Perigord region of France. Walker's characters have more depth than Wagner's, but then he has written nine or ten books. They both emphasize the local culture and the food. Both authors made me want to visit the places they write about. The plot moved along and kept me guessing almost up to the reveal.I can always count on Walker, Louise Penny, and Donna Leon to keep me entertained. It looks like I can add David Wagner to that list. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Tuscany with a twist

You could say "Yes, it's another detective in Tuscany" but it's not JUST another....

New Mexican born Italo-American translator detective: many opportunities for his talents and experience to color the action, to say nothing of the thought processes.

Wagner's observational and descriptive abilities, his well-wrought characters, and Tuscany itself make this a really absorbing and enjoyable book. I am looking forward to the next (due out soon) and many more.

This is a well written book which may cause you to book a trip to Tuscany! Not only an excellent mystery which will keep one guessing but and excellent introduction to the Tuscany area! One learns about the dining and history of the area. I am anxiously waiting to read the next book in the series.

A Modern Day Etruscan Mystery

This book is for those who love Italian culture and âwho-done-itâs. I very much enjoyed Cold Tuscan Stoneâs tension building plot and its discussion of Italian art, history, food and personalities. If you canât be in Italy, at least you can read about it. I hope that Mr.
