National fashion editor has to be up there as one of the dreamiest job titles. Throw in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald as your employer, and you’re in heaven, right? I got to ask Melly Singer just that when this super glamorous, super talented human joined me to talk about product PR in fashion, pitching timelines, online versus print and so much more. Melly has worked everywhere from glossy magazines to community news, but the majority of her career has been spent with the publisher of The Age and SMH (previously Fairfax, now Nine). She’s been a Sunday news editor, a consumer affairs reporter, a deputy news editor, and then she created her dream role for herself: fashion editor of The Age. It’s fair to say Melly knows a thing or two about pitching a good idea. In our conversation we talked about why she loves the storytelling element in fashion journalism, the reason a mass email is an immediate turn-off for Melly and why she thinks fewer product events in a post-Covid world might actually be a good thing. We also touched on the DNA of a good image library (tip: fewer is sometimes better!), Melly’s love of a good pop culture deep-dive with a side of fashion, and how you and your brand can get Melly’s attention with a newsy hook.
