Listen to the previous episode where Fr. Rob talks about the ministries of lector and acolyte as seen through Paul VI’s Motu Proprio, Ministeria Quaedam and Francis’ Spiritus Domini. These roles understood as minor orders. They led up to the major orders of sub-deacon, deacon, and priest. The other minor orders were porter, lector, exorcist, and acolyte. In 1972 Pope Paul VI reformed the minor orders and now they called ministries of lector and acolyte. The sub-deacon role no longer exists either. Today, the ministries of lector and acolyte are open to all the lay faithful as a means to assist in the liturgy and fulfill their baptismal call to be priests, prophets, and kings.
