  • 007 Suddenly Struck Down By Eco-Anxiety with Diane Brown

Diane Brown learnt the importance of taking care of herself following her recovery from burnout a number of years ago. In 2019 she was living her happy ever after as a wellbeing coach until she was suddenly struck down very severely with Eco-anxiety. This may be difficult for some listens to hear. Diane is a solutions focused person and was seeking out the answer to the huge problem of climate change and hoping to fix it herself, but one day whilst reading on the subject something clicked that meant she realised and accepted within her mind that this was a problem too big for her to solve. She became very unwell, very quickly and felt like she was in her own emergency situation. She managed to drag herself to the doctors and was diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression. She talks about her step by step recovery.

    KEY LEARNS

"It can happen to anybody. Whatever training and experience and things you've had, it really can happen to anybody".

"Humans have self protection mechanisms built in. And part of that self protection, psychologically, is to not see and not accept certain things and deny them. Because if you think it through logically, which I'm inclined to do, if you're going to sit there and say, Oh, I can see that the human species is about to become extinct. How do you get your mind around that? I mean, it's completely cataclysmic stuff, isn't it? So your brain is built to resist that, it's programmed to resist that and denying it, subconsciously, is part of that programming"

"I was shocked. How did I not see this coming? How did I not spot any warning signs? Nobody's perfect. But I was looking after myself relatively well. But I kind of didn't have too much time to think about that, as I say, because it was more of a hit the emergency button situation. I was going downhill so fast. I just knew I had to take action. And I think, looking back, I can now see that actually, because of my training and experience. I knew what to do. And I knew to do it quickly. Because had I not had that training of being a well being life coach, had I not had that experience and conversations with other women and things. Would I have picked myself up and dragged myself to the doctors as quickly as I did, I don't think I would, I really don't think I would. So I really took it seriously and treated it as an emergency straightaway. And looking back at the steps I took in my recovery, I can now say it was almost becoming a well being life coach was some kind of universe preparation, so that I would have all these tools at hand ready to help myself back out of this hole"

"Whatever that did for me being outside, that just elevated me to a whole other level of how I felt. And it might have only lasted for 10 minutes or 15 minutes. But at that point, being able to feel good for 10 or 15 minutes was a real big achievement."

"Let's say there's a year left, let's say there's six months left, let's say we're all going up in a fireball next weekend. That would be horrendous. Life is so precious. And the time between now and the weekend for billions and billions of people on the planet is still precious and something we can still appreciate and enjoy. And that's what I became really focused on is that none of us know what's going to happen. And of course, this was all before the pandemic, which kind of proved my point. But nobody knows what's going to happen. All we can really control is what's happening right now and making the best of right now."

She has her own 10 piece band and has been the lead singer for C+C music factory for the Asia and Europe tours, Freedom Williams and The Milestone Band to name a few. Ivy started by dancing and then singing hooks for hip hop groups. She talks about how she had to learn to believe in herself and how she knows that everything starts with herself including keeping herself grounded by being careful who she surrounds herself with. Ivy's reboot is not knowing anything in the music industry, to knowing a lot by reading, learning and asking questions, asking for help, building her confidence level and growing spiritually. She talks about how sport helped her to learn leadership and teamwork, how University and the corporate world taught her how to be professional and how to be in business. She believes wisdom and knowledge make life easier. There are so many pearls of wisdom in this episode as Ivy shares how she lives her life, her values, her identity and how she believes that "There's no ceilings on our dreams at all".

    KEY LEARNS

"If I say I can't do something, that means I won't do something"

"I asked questions, because my mother always told me like, there's no question that is stupid. It's stupid, when you don't ask - A closed mouth doesn't get fed!"

"You're here on this earth for a purpose. Everyone has different gifts, find what that gift is. Then we serve one another, we uplift one another."

" There's a phrase that's out there that says, 'Fake it until you make it'. Well, my motto is 'Faith it until you make it'. So I don't fake anything. Everything's real. What you see is what you get."

"This is a motto that I live by -'The sky's the limit when creators in it'. What does that mean? "There's no ceilings on our dreams at all"

"Be kind, kindness opens doors for you."

"Whatever you want in a person. Be that first. If you want friends. Be a friend. If you want respect, give respect. If you want love, show love. So you have to be it first."

"I don't always get it right. But all the errors that I've made, I've learned from my mistakes. So in order for you to be successful, there's many mistakes that you're going to have to make, even sometimes financially, which really hurts.. But it's a learning curve of life. So you have to be able to live with change, because that's what's constant. Think of changes as riding the wave, because if you were trying to go against that wave, you're gonna get hurt, you're gonna be falling and drowning a little bit. You know, you don't want to deal with that. But you want to ride the wave. It's life and just embrace it all. Embrace it at every level."

  • 005 Bullied To Breathing For the First Time At Age 25 with Marcus Wright

    MARCUS WRIGHT

Marcus talks about how he was bullied in high school and at home for being different, pushing him further and further down into a deep cycle of depression. He attempted suicide on more than one occasion. After the support of his counsellor and a visit to his GP he knew he had to change, so he started volunteering and helping others which lit a fire inside of him. After a few years he managed to come to terms with his own sexuality at age 25, when he says he really breathed for the first time, which was difficult as he was reluctant to prove the bullies right. He is now flourishing and supports parents and young people of the LGBTQIA+ community to see things from a new perspective, and to 'open their eyes just a little bit more'. He wants to help people become Allies. He has currently been nominated for a National Diversity Award in the Role Model of the year category. The subjects we touch on are difficult and may be hard for some to listen to.

    KEY LEARNS

"So if you imagine being in high school and growing up and living in that fortress environment, I was holding my breath. And it wasn't until 25 years old, that I could breathe. And that first breath was like a massive weight had just lifted off my shoulders."

"They liked me for being me. They liked me, because of the heart that I had. And it was at that point, when I could finally breathe. That's when I felt safe."

"I truly believe that sexuality isn't always just set in stone, I do believe that sometimes sexuality can be fluid, just like gender can be fluid"

"I'm not trying to eradicate the I and A . The reason I say LGBTQ+ is because a lot of people within the LGBTQ plus community will just identify as queer, which is the key. So they'll just identify as queer because the queer then is any part of the LGBTQ plus community and doesn't necessarily need that specific label"

"We were discussing before about being an ally, and if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything"

    ABOUT MARCUS

After growing up in a broken home, bullied in high school for being different pushing him into a deep depression and attempted suicide, Marcus managed to turn his life around and "break the cycle".

Marcus has since volunteered within his community to make a safer place for all - focusing on educating people on the struggles of others, minorities, and how we can all do more when it comes to looking after the mental health of others. He won the Pride of Preston award in 2019.

  • 002 Walking to Take in Nature and for Mental Health with Heather Waring

An Episode for Mental Health Awareness week with Heather Waring to show how walking and connecting with nature can have a huge impact on your wellbeing. In fact In the Pandemic over 70% of women have been doing this to take in nature and for mental health. Heather Waring shares how for 10 years she had a feeling that something was missing in her life, but she was not quite sure what it was. Her life wasn't bad, she had great family and friends that she felt she should feel complete with, but she lacked energy and a sparkle in her eye . It was just like there was a jigsaw piece missing which meant that she couldn't complete the picture. In hindsight she was on her way to burnout and adrenal fatigue. Heather talks about her reboot, starting with the realisation by reading a book that her candle had been extinguished - she had burned out, how reaching out for help and the slow pace of walking helped her to connect with nature, growing herself, connecting with herself, helped her to start to find her way back to her again.

    Key Learns

"There was a book called Super woman by Shirley Conrad, and it was about women being able to have it all. And I think there's a lot of women who still do feel they can have it all, why shouldn't they have it all? And I'm not saying you can't have the career and the family and, or the business and all these things. But I do think you have to decide on priorities, and you've got to decide on balance"

"So my real blueprint for living a life you love is to know who you are, know what your values are, know what makes you tick, what lights you up and make sure that you bring all of those things into your life. If you do that, you're going to have a pretty good time. But I think this pandemic has really thrown a lot of that just up into the air for many people and not just for me. '

    About Heather Waring.

Heather is a walk leader, camino expert, transformational coach, author and speaker. And her mission is to impact the lives of women through the simple activity of walking. In fact, her mission is to get 1 million women walking. She creates space for women to rediscover and reconnect with their true self and re-ignite that spark and essence that has got lost along life's path. Whether walking virtually or in person Heather taps into the energy, wisdom and stories of those who have gone before and uses these experiences and learnings in her work with her clients bringing forth their own stories.
