Today on the show we’re going to learn all about the spread of sus scrofa, and no, this is not something Clint started in college, we’re talking about Feral swine, and specifically where landowners can get assistance in managing this damaging invasive species.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it is offering $75 million in funding for the eradication and control of feral swine through the Feral Swine Eradication and Control Pilot Program in a joint effort between USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Today on Huntin’ Land we will learn:

Where is this funding coming from? 

How much of this funding will be directed at partnering with landowners?

What states are eligible for the pilot program?

What kind of partnership efforts will the program offer?

This week on Huntin' Land we're talking with Rob Brannon, master pond builder and President of Meinhardt Farms Inc. Robb has built more ponds than most of us have ever seen, and today he is sharing his insight on what you need to know before you start. 

Water Sources - Does Construction of your pond differ based on the type of water source you intend to use? Rainfall v watershed v pump

Water Retention / Soils - What kind of soils do we need to ensure a successful pond? If we don't have the right soils, is there anything we can do?

Pond Size / Depth - What is the typical size pond that you build? Do you feel there is an ideal size from a recreational perspective, i.e. aesthetics and fishing? How deep is too deep? How much is not enough? 

Shape- What can you tell us about pond shape? Is there a reason to construct the pond in any particular shape or with any particular shoreline features? Does shape vary by site? What about the underwater slope? Why is it important? 

Structure - Underwater and above water
What structure do you place underwater and why? What about on the shoreline?

The Dam -  What comes first, the dam or the hole? Does the dirt in a dam have to be brought in? What about the topsoil and dirt removed to dig the pond, what should we do with that? 

What is freeboard? What is the right amount?

Cost -  Is there a way to estimate cost, say x amount just to get started then +++ / acre of pond size? What is the average construction cost of a typical sized recreational pod? What goes into a project that will increase cost?

We’ll go in-depth with Tom on Wetlands Mitigation through Ducks Unlimited. Ducks Unlimited projects on private lands provide tremendous benefits to waterfowl, other wildlife and you! DU has teams of biologists and engineers that provide wetland restoration, management, and protection services directly to landowners. When a private land project is matched up with wetland mitigation funds, the result is habitat for wildlife and financial gain to the landowner. We’ll define a wetland mitigation bank. We'll learn what happens when wetlands are destroyed, and how many acres of wetlands have to then be preserved?

Tom will explain how Ducks Unlimited can come out on your property and advise you on how to create or enhance waterfowl habitat. We’ll learn if still own the property and just how this consultation can increase financial gain for the landowner. We’ll also cover the types of wetlands that DU most interested in protecting, with a special emphasis on what types of wetland sites have good potential for DU wetland mitigation banking.
