Husker Doc Talk

Clete Blakeman was a three-year letter winner at quarterback for the University of Nebraska. But he's made a more prominent name for himself as one of the top officials in the National Football League.

Clete cut his teeth as an official following in his dad's footsteps in the high school ranks in Nebraska and small colleges in the Midwest. He jumped to the Big 12 Conference in 2000 and the NFL in 2008, where he spent two seasons as a Field Judge. He was promoted to the White Hat (Referee) in 2010. He was the Referee for Super Bowl 50.

On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports,  we have a long conversation with Clete about all things officiating. A fascinating story of how he got started to where he is now. For you video game enthusiasts, Since 2013, Blakeman's voice and likeness have been used for penalty announcements in the Madden NFL franchise.

College athletics is a BIG business. So here's some news that will shock no one; it will keep getting bigger.

When Trev Alberts took the job at Nebraska to be the Athletic Director, he wanted to surround himself with people he trusted. So one of the first people he turned to was Doug Ewald. The fancy title Ewald has is Executive Associate Athletic Director-Chief Financial Officer. In layman's terms, he's the bean counter for a budget of well over $ 100 million.

On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice sit down and talk money with Doug. The ever-changing landscape of NIL and what the future holds for paying players. Has selling alcohol at Pinnacle Bank Arena been the financial windfall some people thought it would be? And with USC and UCLA joining the Big 10, what does this mean for travel budgets and the strain on student-athletes?

There's a lot to digest in our hour-long conversation. But one thing is for sure; there's more to an athletic department than most of us even know.

This is the podcast we have been waiting for! The brothers Zatechka.

Betfred Sports presents the Doc Talk Podcast. On this edition, Travis Justice sits back (interjecting occasionally) as Dr. Rob welcomes his brother Jon into the studio. So much to discuss, from the family dynamics to football to the recruiting, as Jon's son Issac recently committed to North Dakota State through the transfer portal. And we get to the bottom of two things we are dying to know, who's the toughest and smartest?

Former Husker fullback Willie Miller has a story that could one day be made into a movie. You will hear much of the story by listening to this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports.

When Miller graduated in 2000, he was in so much pain, and he knew that his football career was over. He needed surgery but was no longer a student-athlete; Nebraska was not going to pay for it even though his injuries were from him wearing the scarlet and cream.

Miller turned to painkillers. They worked. However, masking the pain doesn't solve the problem. In fact, it creates a bigger one. Addiction.

Massive weight gain, homelessness, disability, suicidal thoughts, and a near-death experience has Miller on the road to redemption.

He's fit, remarried, and now an operating room nurse at Methodist Hospital.

In this powerful hour-long plus, Miller is open and honest about the demons he's faced and offers hope to those who are going through a similar journey.

He's now becoming a resource for former athletes with Athletes Revived. Its mission is Keeping Hope Alive. In 2017, Miller got the surgery he desperately needed, thanks to the generosity of the Nebraska Greats Foundation.

Have you missed us? It's been a while since we've taken a couple of weeks off in between podcasts. Blame Travis! He decided to escape to Europe for a couple of weeks so he could pout about his Hawkeyes losing to Nebraska and avoid Dr. Rob living rent-free inside his head!

In this episode of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice cover a lot of ground. With the dismissal of Mickey Joesph from the program, O-Line coach Donovan Raiola was retained by Matt Rhule, and Rob's Vegas vacation to celebrate the College Football Hall of Fame Induction of Zach Wiegert.

We are looking for suggestions during the off-season. The podcast will become more interview based until we start talking about Xs and Os again. If there is someone you would like us to interview, send us suggestions at [email protected].

Are the Huskers any better with Mickey Joesph as the interim Head Coach than when Scott Frost was leading the team earlier in the year?

Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka discuss this topic on the latest episode of the Doc Talk podcast presented by BetFred Sports. Why are we talking about it? Our friend Scott Spreitzer who joins us every Wednesday for "Behind The Point" spread, says Nebraska is worse in his power rankings now than before Mickey took over. Of course, many factors go into these power rankings, but with a 3-8 record, there's no hiding the fact that Nebraska ain't that good.

The Huskers have one last game to show things are getting better for the next head coach, whoever that might be. But, the truth is, a win over Iowa would help heal some of the deep wounds that have been cut over this season.

The showdown with the Hawkeyes is turning into quite a rivalry game. Fans don't care that much for each other. Nebraska hasn't beaten Iowa since Bo Pelini was the Head Coach. The Huskers can keep Iowa out of the Big Ten Championship game this year. This has the potential to be a Black Friday that gives us the drama of college football that we crave.

The Golden Calf is a false idol. But, unfortunately, it's tempting to worship it when there seems to be no hope or, in this case, no answers.

The Golden Calf I am referring to is every internet rumor that claims to know who the next Nebraska Football Coach will be. Last week it was Deion Sanders. The week before that, Matt Ruhle. The people that are starting these rumors have one motivation, clicks. That's right, clicks. They feed off your emotions of wanting something so badly that you will listen to anything by clicking on their rumors and lining their pockets with money.

On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss why they aren't falling for any rumors and won't believe a thing until Trev Alberts personally names the next head coach. The Nebraska Athletic Director has owned the process since he fired Scott Frost. So there's no way Trev will let anything slip through the cracks with just a couple of weeks left in the process.

The search for a new coach is vitally important. The Huskers have again failed to make a bowl game. As a result, instilling a new culture and direction takes on greater importance. But what's left for this year's team? Two games to play, and the only thing to play for now is pride.
