Husker Doc Talk

The rumors were flying last week leading up to the Minnesota game. Trev Alberts had found his coach, and an announcement was imminent. We now know there was no truth to the rumors.

Nebraska lost to Minnesota 20-13 and is not one loss away from not being bowl eligible for a sixth consecutive season. Six!

Where there's smoke, there's fire, right? This Doc Talk Podcast, presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss the possibility of an announcement coming this week. If it does, there are only two options to pick from, Mickey Joseph has the interim tag removed, or Matt Ruhle. Otherwise, it's a wait until the regular season is over.

The Huskers had a chance against Minnesota. It was a tale of two halves. In the end, the Huskers couldn't stop Mohamed Ibrahim who rushed for 128-yards and two touchdowns. Also, the Golden Gophers had the football almost 10-minutes longer than the Huskers.

It's official. Nebraska has a backup quarterback problem. It became painfully obvious when Casey Thompson was knocked out of the game against Illinois. Chubba Purdy came in and was 3 of 8 passing for  15-yards and one interception.

On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka admits the backup quarterback situation is concerning but says don't hit the panic button just yet.  He believes if Purdy had a whole week working with the number one offense and getting the majority of snaps, think might, and we stress might be different.

The Huskers will have their hands full with another Big 10 West opponent on Saturday. An 11:00 AM kickoff against Minnesota. The Gophers will try and ground and pound just like Illinois did a week ago.

There's only one thing that matters from here on out. Scoreboard. The Purdue game is a perfect example. Nebraska got kicked around statistically, yet the Huskers could have and maybe should have won the game.

On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice break down the Big 10 West Division, starting with the Huskers game on Saturday with Illinois. The Fighting Illini are ranked 17th this week and in the driver's seat in the division. At this point of the season, Nebraska is what it is on both sides of the ball. Talent aside, the Huskers are playing with more passion under interim Head Coach Mickey Joesph and can win every game remaining on the schedule except for Michigan. Does passion alone win football games? Of course not, but if you can keep the score close, it might be the difference in pulling off an upset.

Nebraska did score a big win during the off-week, getting a commitment from Lincoln East Malachi Coleman. As an athlete, Coleman is a freak. Right now, he's a wide receiver with a huge upside. However, Dr. Rob offers a different take on where he would like to see Coleman on the field, which might surprise you. It will be interesting to get your feedback on his take.

Dr. Rob just returned from visiting his oldest daughter, who attends Florida State school. He attended the Clemson vs. Florida State game. Randomly in this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports, the topic of traditions came up. There are many traditions we know about in schools in the South. This begs the question, does Nebraska have any traditions?

That's not an easy question to answer. Is it the releasing of balloons after the first touchdown? Is it the pipeline? Is it the black shirts? But, seriously, in the landscape of college football, what excellent college football traditions do the Huskers add to the landscape? Also, we want to know if you remember the failed attempt at an Alma Matter song by Chip Davis back when Bill Byrne was the Athletic Director. If you do, you are probably trying to forget it!

Also, former Nebraska Volleyball coach Terry Pettit took a shot on Twitter last week at those who put out "Report Cards" after games. Dr. Rob puts out a report card. We respond the criticism and respectfully disagree with coach Pettit.

Did that headline get your attention? Well, a Nebraska fan didn't like Dr. Rob's report card for the Rutgers game and proclaimed Dr. Rob a bum!

Well, the bum is back again this week, and he's bringing his knowledge and expertise to the Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports.

This week Dr. Rob goes in deep on Anthony Grant. The Nebraska running back is one of the best in the country, currently 8th nationally in rushing yards, despite a crappy offensive line.

Also, Dr. Rob assesses Trey Palmer at wide receiver and Casey Thompson at quarterback. Despite the great individual performances, Dr. Rob tells Travis Justice that the Huskers will still have their hands full at Purdue in the battle for the Big 10 West Division lead.

Is Nebraska's win over Indiana feeding false hope into the fan base? Dr. Rob isn't ready to go that far. However, in this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sportsbook, Dr. Rob and Travis Justice remind everyone that the Hoosiers aren't a very good team and were missing two of their best wide receivers. Dr. Rob's report card for the game was not as generous as many would have liked coming off a win.

Dr. Rob's Report Card

Running Game B-

Passing Game B-

Offensive Line C-

Defense C+

Special Teams B+

Overall C

Dr. Rob is particularly critical of the offensive line. Specifically the play of Bryce Benhart and Turner Corcoran. Dr. Rob knows a thing or two about O-Line play and knows the Huskers running and passing games could be much better if the line or the personnel changed.

The win over Indiana is a step in the right direction for Nebraska. The confidence builder is a Huge boost for coaches, players, and fans. It is hard not to look ahead because of Nebraska's favorable schedule. Yes, winning the West division is not out of the question. Why? Because the West is horrible! No team jumps out as a clear front-runner. We believe that every game Nebraska left on Nebraska's schedule is winnable except for Michigan. Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves; just because they are winning it's also a reminder every game can easily be lost.

You can buy beer at Nebraska basketball games this season. When will you be able to do the same at football games? Dr. Rob says a year, maybe two.

The Nebraska fan base seemed to be a lot less stressed this past week.  Maybe the week off was as much needed for the fan base as it was for the players?

In this week's Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sportsbook, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss if a week off can fix all the problems the Nebraska football team faces.

Up next for Nebraska is Indiana. The Hoosiers are coming off their first season loss, falling to Cincinnati. Indiana didn't do itself any favors by turning the ball over three times and allowing the Bearcats to score 14-points in a time span of 10-seconds. All part of a 28-point 2nd quarter for Cincinnati.

The rumor mill was running a full speed during the off week. Many stories, podcasts, and videos discuss who would be the ideal candidate for the Nebraska job. Dr. Rob and Travis don't have a strong opinion one way or another as they both agree it's a crap shoot on whether or not one coach succeeds and one doesn't.

Many people are watching Dave Aranda at Baylor, Matt Campbell at Iowa State, Lance Liepold at Kansas, Chris Klieman at Kansas State, and Troy Calhoun at Air Force. There are a lot of reasons to take the Nebraska job if you are one of these coaches. However, with other jobs opening up, one big reason NOT to move to Lincoln could be living up to expectations. Sure, most coaches want a challenge, but Nebraska has had three head coaches in the last ten years, and many could argue that the expectations of success or the time given to get there are unrealistic.

Last week it was Scott Frost. This week it's Defensive Coordinator Eric Chinander who is fired. Let's be honest; this is not exactly a huge shock as many people think he should have been fired right along with Frost.

The Nebraska defense was horrible against Oklahoma. Giving up 312-Rushing yards and 49 unanswered points. Mickey Joseph was left with little joins as he tries to salvage a season where Nebraska is not 1-3. If there was ever a time for a bye week, this is it! Will there be more changes?  Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss on this week's Doc Talk Podcast!

This podcast is a replay of the live show Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka did the night Scott Frost was fired as Nebraska's Head Coach.

Mickey Joseph will serve as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2022 season. Nebraska lost to Georgia Southern last night 45-42 in Frost's last game as Head Coach. The Huskers are 1-2 on the season.

Frost ends his Nebraska coaching career with a 16-31 record, 0-13 against ranked teams, and 5-19 in games decided by 7 points or less. Frost failed to produce a winning season at Nebraska and never qualified for a bowl game. Frost, a National Championship-winning quarterback for the Huskers, came to Nebraska following an undefeated season at Central Florida. He was considered a "Home Run" hire who could unite the fan base. The Wood River native is scheduled to receive a $15-million buyout of his contract.

On paper, 38-17 looks like a pretty good final score as Nebraska beats North Dakota. However, Doctor Rob Zatechka says there is a lot of work to make a believer out of him going forward. The next real measuring stick will be the Oklahoma game in a couple of weeks. First, Nebraska must get through Georgia Southern, coached by former USC Head Coach Clay Helton. Georgia Southern scored 59-points in a win last weekend.

In this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sportsbook.  Dr. Rob breaks down his report card from the North Dakota game. Yes, his grading scale is a little weird, but things will make a lot more sense after he explains it.

Dr. Rob and Travis Justice spend a lot of time discussing the offense. Specifically the offensive line and the running game. The runningbacks are in place and impressive. Will the offensive line be able to hold up for the season to support them?

The defense is also discussed, as well as the improvement in the special teams, which we all know can be the difference between winning and losing.

Despite the win, there was plenty of audible booing at Memorial Stadium. This has some fans upset; you should never boo the players. But is booing a bad thing? Dr. Rob and Travis discuss.

The College Football Playoff is expanding. This is a good thing, and Dr. Rob goes in deep on how a 12-team playoff adds more value to the regular season than the four-team format we have now.
