On this talk, we focus on the idea of changing walls. What used to be an illegal profession, graffiti art, is now a highly lucrative industry being translated into sneakers, prints, nightclubs, hotels, merchandise and more. This industry heavily impacts the hemisphere of streetwear and the creative industry. Our moderator, Sky Gellatly, CEO/Co-founder of ICNCLST, speaks to some of the greatest graffiti artists of our time — Stash, Futura, Andre, Steve Powers Espo and Crash

In this very special session of HYPETALKS, we invited four women who are changing the game in the streetwear industry. Our senior editor of HYPEBAE, Lily Chen and illustrator/founder of Undo-Ordinary Sophia Chang sat down with Lauren Tsai, Emily Oberg, Yi Ng and Aleali May. They talk about their individual paths to success, the pros and cons to social media, competing in a "boys club" industry and much more. Later the group answers questions from the audience.

One of the most anticipated chats of HYPEFEST, jeffstaple sat down with a host of the industry’s most in-demand creatives to break down the science of collaborations. Matthew M. Williams of ALYX, Errolson Hugh from ACRONYM, Hiroshi Fujiwara of fragment design, John Elliott and Nigel Sylvester all took part in the sprawling, hour-long discourse. Topics ranged from Elliott underlining the storytelling aspect of collaboration, while Fujiwara discussed the birth of his HTM line with Nike. In fact, all of the participants have collaborated with Nike, resulting in a series of references to their individual time spent with the Swoosh. Later, Hugh broke down what makes a good collaboration, describing it as “Two people, who are good at doing what they do, [make] some new thing that they couldn’t do without each other.” By the end, the panelists agree that there are too many collaborations in the industry, perhaps even too much product. “I think it’s our job to create product that really means something,” said Williams. “It kinda should deserve to be in existence and collaborations should check that same box.”

This year’s inaugural HYPEFEST was filled with an assortment of exclusive launches, live performances and gripping discussions. The latter of which included a HYPETALKS session that focused on the streetwear industry’s love/hate relationship with reselling. Hosted by jeffstaple, the panel welcomed the likes of StockX’s Josh Luber, Arun Gupta of Grailed, Unique Hype’s OG Ma and Leo Rodriguez representing adidas. Topics like accessibility and acceptance led the dialogue as the group examines how the secondary market for sneakers transitioned from something corporate figures wouldn’t even acknowledge, to a billion-dollar industry that everyone wants a piece of. The collective also talked about the art of supply and demand — using Supreme a case study – and how it can effect resell shops. Lastly, the panelists closed out the exchange with some questions from the audience.

Along with the exclusive events and releases at HYPEFEST, one of the major draws was an opportunity to join roundtable conversations between some of the industry’s major players. For this session of HYPETALKS, illustrator Sophia Chang and THE BRILLIANCE! founders Benjamin Edgar and Chuck Anderson sat down with moderator jeffstaple for a discussion centering around entrepreneurship & independent content creation. The creatives touch on topics that include the development of street culture from ‘05 to now, storytelling and the crossroads of travel and creativity. While tracing the growth of their own companies, the panelists explore the choices they made (both Edgar and Anderson reveal that they didn’t attend college) and their sources of inspiration — Chang notes that a friend of hers watches videos on mute while listening to a different film score. Later, the group fields questions from the audience; when asked to give advice to emerging designers, Chang offers a single nugget of wisdom: “Stop looking at Instagram.”

This year’s first-ever HYPEFEST featured exclusive product releases, immersive installations and live performances. However, one of the more significant highlights of the festival are the HYPETALKS discussions led by jeffstaple. One of the sessions touched upon “Art + Commerce,” gleaning key insights from leading artists Joshua Vides and Sue Tsai as well as wizened industry figure Sky Gellatly on how to conduct business in the ever-changing art world. From making artworks accessible and affordable for younger consumers to creating standout designs for commercial projects and fashion collaborations as an artist, the artistic yet business-savvy panel drop nuggets of wisdom that will hopefully inspire budding creatives.
