I Am Power

Statistically, About 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. This week as we talk to Author Marva J Edwards about her experience with domestic violence, she shares how she stepped into her own power to escape her abuser,  and how she has turned her story into a mission to help others heal. Years after she rebuilt her new life she realized the need for a safe space for survivors to continue their healing journey as well as a place to connect with other survivors, thus creating MOM-ministries. An outreach program equipped to empower and help those seeking to live a better life after abuse and help set the foundations for a healthy family. Researchers discovered that children begin to express concerns about their bodies as young as age 5. FIVE!!!

Media gets the bulk of the blame for airbrushing models and celebrities into unrealistic, and typically unattainable beauty standards. Then we blame society for glorifying these retouched versions of people. But did you know studies show that parents usually play a role in influencing their children? Makes sense, as we tend to verbally display our own insecurities and dislikes with our bodies. So how do we break this cycle? How do we genuinely instill into our children that they are perfect they way they are?

Chloe was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder, Alopecia at the age of 8, shortly after her mother discovering her little girl was experiencing hair loss. Now she’s sharing her experiences and motivating people all over the world to love and except the things we cannot change and embrace what others may call flaws as your own unique and individual beauty.

Ripple effect: the continuing and spreading results of an event or action.

But how do we break the cycle when the waves seem to keep coming and they’re too strong to stand in? It’s not always easy. I would almost say that it is safe to say it’s never easy. But it is worth it.

Samantha is the embodiment of the saying “anything is possible.” When the odds seem to continuously stack against her, she made it. She survived.

Sam bravely shares with us her journey through childhood trauma and mental illness that lead up to her drug and opiate addiction that began at the age of 13. Along with dangerous behavior that ultimately ended with her incarceration.1 We discuss what it was like for her when her body and mind found the escape she desperately searched for through opiates. And that’s just a fraction of her story. Tune in to hear her incredible story of how she overcame her addiction, carried AND delivered her baby while incarcerated, served her time and came out on top!

We always like to talk about healing on the podcast and how that looks different for everyone. This week I talk with Sarah from Brooklyn, NY and her story is just that and more. Last year, during the inception of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sarah bravely made the choice to start her sobriety journey.  When you think of a child’s relationship with their mother, A beautiful and nurturing one usually comes to mind. Unfortunately, for many people that is not always the case. This week we dive deep into a story that was, and still is the complete opposite of your typical, cookie-cutter mother daughter-relationship. Tijana Daly bravely shares with us her experience of childhood growing up with her narcissistic mother. She tells us how she battled self confidence and day to day life with the person that is supposed to be her biggest fan.
