Event Details:

Presented by San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE), with the generous support of University Health System and Valero, Taste the Dream is not your traditional gala. Featuring Chef Jason Dady and six additional local chefs, guests will enjoy cuisine from around the world, as we celebrate diversity through food.

Scheduled the week before Martin Luther King Day, SAGE spotlights the work of economic development on the Eastside to honor the dream of strength in diversity. In line with this, SAGE has partnered with the City’s World Heritage Office to highlight San Antonio’s Creative City of Gastronomy designation from UNESCO. San Antonio is only the second city in the United States to earn this distinction, and the first in Texas.

Food stations throughout the Mays Family Center will allow attendees to enjoy great conversations with friends and chefs. Guests can dance the night away with live music, an open bar, and specialty craft cocktails.

Funds raised by our Gala will be used to support economic development to champion quality of life for individuals, families, businesses, and non-profits on the Eastside.

Cindy Boynton was raised in Houston and attended SMU, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She continued her education and received a Masters in Special Education from the University of Houston.

Cindy married Bryan and they moved to San Antonio, where she taught special education for four years. She has three children and Drew, the youngest, has Down Syndrome and Autism.

She has participated on state and local committees dealing with special education and has advocated for individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities. Cindy started what now is called the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas in 1994.

Today’s guest is Live Oak Mayor Mary M. Dennis!

Bio

Mary M. Dennis was born in Newton, Mississippi. Mary’s father served in the United States Army and the family traveled throughout Europe and the United States. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas when Mary was 15. Mary, also known as “Little Mary” is the daughter of Mary Wyatt, the former owner of “Flowers by Mary”.

She is a Sam Houston High School graduate, a paraprofessional with the San Antonio Independent School District and completed a Mortuary Science Associate Degree at San Antonio College. Mary is passionate about the education and safety of our children. Mary is also a licensed Funeral Director having worked for both Sutton & Sutton Mortuary and Lewis Funeral Home. She helps wonderful people make difficult decisions and provide assistance during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Mary has found both of these professions to be very rewarding.

Mary has received numerous awards, but her most noteworthy accomplishment is being chosen to serve as Mayor for the City of Live Oak in the June 12, 2010 run-off election. She is the First African American to serve the City of Live Oak in this capacity. Prior to her Mayoral election, she ran twice for council seats in Live Oak and was defeated each time by a few votes. As destiny would have it, Mary was given the opportunity to complete the council place terms both times as the elected council person resigned. Mary Dennis says “It is about not giving up and being determined. This is something she learned from her parents – to never ever give up. Whatever your dream is – go for it!” Currently Mayor Dennis is serving her second term as Mayor of Live Oak, Mary desires to bring the city closer together across varied backgrounds. Mary believes that government is about helping people, being a good steward of tax dollars and making City government more efficient.

Her additional civic activities includes service as the Vice President to the Northeast Partnership, member of Randolph Metro Chamber, City of Live Oak Economic Development Corporation, City of Live Oak Planning and Zoning Commission, Bowden Charter of Business and Professional Women, San Antonio Commission of Literacy and Mary is a charter member of National Council of Negro Women – Ruth Jones McClendon Chapter. Ms. Dennis also served as Commissioner on the Mayor’s Commission for the Status of Women, San Antonio Livestock and Rodeo Public Affairs Committee, the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and President of Pearls (Professional Business Women). She is a member of Livingway Christian Church.

Mary epitomizes the power of persistence as well as the incomparable power of an abiding faith in God.

Biography Major General Retired, Alfred K. Flowers

Major General Alfred K. Flowers is an Author and Senior Strategic Advisor for a San
Antonio minority owned business. He is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the
Air Force for Budget or simply said The Air Force Budget Director where he was
responsible for $170 Billion Dollars of Air Force funds.
Following high school graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of
seventeen. After completing basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in
San Antonio, Texas, he was assigned as a supply warehouseman at Grand Forks AFB in
North Dakota followed by a year at Da Nang AB, Vietnam and five other assignments
prior to 1975. He received his A.A. degree from Thomas Edison University,
B.S. Degree from Southern Illinois University, and Master Degrees from Ball State and
The National Defense University. In 1978 after thirteen years of enlisted service he
attended Officer Training School where he was a distinguished graduate and
commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He served as a budget officer at several Air Force
bases, Chief of Budget at Headquarters Air Combat Command, Director of Budget
Programs HQ USAF, and Chief Financial Officer, HQ Air Education and Training
Command and The United States Special Operations Command, J-8. He Commanded the
Holms Center at Maxwell AFB, Alabama and The Second Air Force at Keesler AFB,
Mississippi. In 2009, he was appointed as The Deputy Assistant Secretary of budget in
the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force. On 1 January 2012, after forty-six
years and five months of service, he retired from the United States Air Force, making
him the longest-serving airman in Air Force history, the longest serving African
American in defense history, and the longest serving continuous active duty member in
the history of The United States Department of Defense.
His military recognitions include two Distinguished Service Medals, the Defense
Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster and the Defense
Meritorious Service Medal plus seventeen other decorations. He previously served on
the board of directors for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, the Air Force Aid
Society and the Air Force Services Agency and is currently serving on six boards as Vice
Chairman and director. Major General (R) Flowers was inducted into the Air Education
and Training Command Order of The Sword 6 April 2012 making him the 224 th Air Force
inductee since 1967. He was also inducted into The Order of The Long Leaf Pine by the
Govenor of North Carolina in August 2016. Additionally, he was recognized by the Air
Force Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award September 2018. He is married
to Ida M. Flowers and they have one son, Colonel Alfred K. Flowers, Jr.

Prior to cofounding ShearShare with her husband, Courtney fast-tracked international sales and marketing success for brands such as Zendesk, Zenefits, and Qualtrics. She spent the last two decades building winning teams as the vice president of marketing for Marketing Advocate, global director of Oracle’s worldwide digital marketing strategy and innovations group, and head of digital demand generation and JAPAC field marketing at RightNow Technologies. Courtney’s leadership in demand and revenue generation at RightNow Technologies was instrumental in the $1.45B acquisition of the company.

ShearShare was born out of sheer necessity. When Tye expanded his salon several years ago, he noticed a shift away from the industry standard: instead of signing up cosmetologists and barbers under long-term contracts, he started to receive inquiries for day leases of his suites. Looking to recoup the investment for his salon remodel, he decided to host the visiting cosmetologists and charge them on a per-day basis. After numerous requests from stylists and manually matching cosmetologists for three years, the idea for ShearShare was born!
