  • #72 Sarah Van Buren "Disco is Long Life" + Art in Public Spaces

Broadcasting LIVE from Outdated Lite today, Theresa sits down with Sarah Van Buren, a woman of many talents like: musician, artist, DJ, 24-DRONE Producer, O+ Festival Kingston Producer, Van Buren Sisters legacy holder, cross-country motorcycle rider...the list is long. We talk about the making of her first musical album in 2018, the title of which, "Disco is Long Life," came to her during a meditation. Music has been a driving force for as long as she can remember. She's been involved with and producing various musical and creative events from her artist collective, CHERYL, which began out of a need for more accessible and inclusive dance parties closer to home in Brooklyn, NY to 24-Hour DRONE, the O+ Festival and most recently with a DJ collective in the Hudson Valley called "Mostly Girls." She is the great-great niece of Gussie and Addie Van Buren, two women who rode across country on motorcycles in 1916, a time when women didn't ride motorcycles period. Sarah repeated their journey on the Centennial anniversary of their famed trip. Would she do it again? Yes.

Midway through the show, we are joined by: Erika deVries, Artist, Teacher, Mom, and co-Creator at Cygnets Way and Lite Brite Neon; Kimberly Kae, Painter, former co-Director of the O+ Art Committee, Mom and most recently co-owner of Metal House Cider; Aimee Gardner, O+ Festival Operations Director and Disaster Mansion Fixer Upper; and Jesika Farkas, O+ Art Committee co-Director and Production Manager for the film industry. We talk about the importance of public art, i.e. access, why we create art, the O+ Festival murals, how they are made, the impact they've made on the community and the wrongs in government regulation of public art. In an attempt to summarize the beautiful words shared by today's guests, what the world needs now is more collaboration, more connection, through art by more community members, not regulation of the thing that brings people together. It's time for the systems to change.

Today’s show was engineered by Nate Brogan and Perla Darnell of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from Shana Falana,  http://www.shanafalana.com/

  • #71 Rita Vanacore "Planet Seniors" + Aliza Theetge "Super Star Student" Women's Rights Yesterday and Today

Today I get the wonderful opportunity to speak with Rita Vanacore, a business owner in Uptown Kingston for forty years and co-owner of Dreamweavers Salon and Dominick's Cafe. During this time, she has also been an educator for professionals in her service profession teaching styling, and other techniques, the recipient of numerous national awards for her contributions to the industry, and always an active campaigner for women’s rights, gay rights and children’s health issues. She hosts “Planet Seniors” on Radio Kingston as a dedication to the idea that senior citizens are valuable members of our community whose voices should be given just as much “air time” as everyone else. Our conversation winds through various aspects of her rich life from women's rights, abortion rights, gay rights, spirituality, family, business and self care. Rita's show is live on Monday evenings from 8-9pm or anytime on the Radio Kingston archive.

Next I play my interview with Aliza Rose Theetge, a dynamic and confident 9 year old who's ready to be a women's activist.  She likes to point out that her initials spell ART, which she loves, and loves math, singing and dancing. She’s been studying Marie Curie in school who’s inspired her to become a women’s activist. We talk about lots of things like math, art, singing, being scared, bus drivers, Marie Curie, being a big sister and golfing. I look forward to seeing her on the big screen some day!

Self care wisdom from Theresa, we are not our thoughts, we are aware of them; we are not our emotions, we feel them; we are not our body, we experience the world through it...

  • #70 Tara Sanders (Trauma Informed Yoga) + Jenny Lee Fowler (Paper Cutting Artist) "Surviving and Thriving"

Tara Sanders came to her yoga mat to explore and heal. Having a strong commitment to serving the community and advocating for underserved populations, she has taught students at a mental health advocacy agency, homeless youth, and developed a therapeutic yoga & mindfulness program for a domestic violence shelter in Upstate NY. She is currently working with the Ulster County Crime Victims Assistance Program in developing trauma informed yoga programming that is available for free to sexual assault survivors, anyone supporting survivors, and professionals working to support survivors with their healing. Tara also sits on the advisory board of Exhale to Inhale, a non-profit organization that brings yoga to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in New York and Los Angeles through free weekly classes at shelters and community-based organizations. Today, Tara shares the differences between a trauma informed yoga class and a "regular" class, the benefits of somatic practices like yoga to help heal trauma, the film Resilience about adverse childhood experiences, and surviving and THRIVING after her own personal trauma of childhood sexual assault and her father's passing from an opioid overdose.

Jenny Lee Fowler is a freelance artist specializing in private commissions, illustration, exhibition, event entertainment, and workshops. She snips traditional silhouette portraits and original paper cuttings. Her work has been spotted in Taproot Magazine, Design Sponge, Martha Stewart Living, House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens, Garden Design, Southern Weddings, NY Times and other print and online venues. Jenny is a principal artist for the Catskill Waters project. She designed five Hudson Valley Seed Company Art Packs, was the recipient of a Spring Creek Project Collaborative Retreat and a residency at Drop Forge + Tool, and was an artist-in-residence for the grand opening of the Walkway Over the Hudson. She teaches workshops in the adult education program at New York Botanical Garden. Jenny "homeschools" Theresa on the history of the art of paper cutting, how she does it, the intricacies of it, and how she teaches others to do it. Jenny was recently re-diagnosed with breast cancer and shares how she and her family are taking care of one another and staying optimistic, living outside of the statistics of what stage 4 breast cancer brings.

And don't forget to give and support their transformational work.

(Note time approx 15 mins in.) Next up Theresa is joined by three women working in the body, mind, and wellness field:

These women authentically embody their teachings and offer them from a place of compassion and sincerity. It was an honor to be in conversation with them!

  • Katy Kondrat (Sustainable Agriculture Activist) and Jolie Holland (Songwriter) "Keep Going"

Hello ery'body... Theresa is in ITALY so it's just me, Shana Falana, holding down the fort! It's also my last day on the air, but please don't be sad... Theresa is excited to continue the "i want what SHE has" journey and will keep bringing you incredible guests and conversations. It's been an honor to serve you all, I'm happy to report that my music life is picking up and I just need do 'self care' and let something in my schedule go, alas this glorious show.

My first guest today is Katy Kondrat. She is a mother, singer, the manager of the Kingston NY Farmers Market, and now the council member (but also founder) of the Kingston Food Coop. Katy's interest in bringing community and farms together started when she was at SUNY New Paltz. We talk about her love of collaboration, music, and her gift of community organizing. She recently launched the membership drive of Co-op at Rough Draft books during the Common Wealth Hudson Valley event, in which Evelyn Wright, founder, explains to us some of the alternative economic growth that is happening here. We play a clip of Evelyn's introduction!

My second guest today is Jolie Holland.  She is a beloved singer, songwriter and performer that you may also remember from the Be Good Tanyas. Shana and Jolie knew eachother in San Fransisco in the early 2000's which made for a more intimate interview. Jolie shares  about life on the road, her stage fright, and how difficult the music business is. Her message ultimately though, what else would I do? The answer, "keep going".

Self Care: I (Shana) share about how this show has been a gift to ME! By interviewing women this last year 'that have what I want' it has aloud me to take my power back instead of giving it away, thinking that others have things I could never attain.... I also read from a quote from the book "Get Over It" by Iyanla Vanzant.

Today’s show was engineered by Ben Benton of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org with special support from Manuel Blas. Next week our guests are yoga teachers Nidhi Huba, Shawn Harrison and Cory Nakasue.

  • Talking Hormones and Healing

Today Theresa is joined by Renee Keplinger (formerly Darmstadt for those of you in Kingston who know her by her maiden name). Renee is a Personal Trainer and runs the boutique fitness and women's studio, Cornell Street Studios in Kingston, NY. Renee kicks off the show with a little background about herself and how she transitioned from managing art events to following her passion of fitness. Just as she was getting back into running she was knocked down by a severe hormone imbalance stemming from coming off her birth control pill. She went from running a 5 min 34 sec mile to barely being able to walk a mile. Throughout the show we learn about the challenges this presented for Renee both personally and in her work and how she built herself back slowly through a fierce commitment to her healing. She shares her many self care practices as well as how she works with her clients, leading by example. She believes she's about 95% fully recovered and enthusiastically back in her running game. Renee works with individuals as well as group classes often times taking them into the field to enjoy the Spring weather.

Renee and Theresa were joined by Gynecologist, Dr. Amy Novatt, who specializes in Menopause management, Adolescent gynecology and Integrative Medicine. She is also Chief - Department of OBGYN, Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY. Dr. Novatt takes questions from Renee, Theresa and callers, Shana and Evelyn. The conversation winds through an understanding of how hormones affect a woman's body, HPV and pap smears, and surgical menopause. Thanks to our callers. Here is the reference to the book by Lori Ann King on her experience with her journey through surgical menopause, Come Back Strong.

The moral of the story. Our bodies are complex, and they are unique. They deserve love. Thanks to everyone for sharing and helping to make today's show an informative one for everyone.

Next week, Shana is holding down the fort with guests Katy Kondrat of the Kingston Food Coop and Farmer's Market and musician Jolie Holland. Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another.

  • #66 Aimee Herman (Everything Grows) and Heidi Vanderlee (Early Riser) "Opinions Expressed Here Are Probably Shouted"

Hello Hello! And happy SPRING, wow the trees are popping upstate, it's so gorgeous here. We are driving around with our sunroofs open and sun hats on. We want you to know that we will be taking calls NEXT WEEK, May 1st with our guest Dr. Amy Novatt who is an incredible local gynecologist. You can call the station at 845-331-1490 with your questions  from 1:15-2pm EST.

We start by girl talking about the show Shana saw at the Guggenheim last week: Hilma af Klint, Paintings for the Future. She shares about her own history with spiritualism and channeling creativity through wicca and circle casting.

Our first guest is Aimee Herman, a three-time Pushcart Prize nominated poet and writer looking to disembowel the architecture of gender and what it means to queer the body. She shares about being bullied as a kid, mental health, her own attempts at suicide as well as her mother's and how writing has helped her to explore these deep issues. In addition to her own writing, Aimee teaches writing and literature at Bronx college, and helps to spread self love and acceptance through a letter writing exercise with her students where they write love letters to themselves, and after they've forgotten the task she then mails them to her students at a later date. Her first young novel, Everything Grows, is coming out in May. The book explores issues like coming out, gender identity, bullying, mental health and forgiveness. When not teaching or writing, Aimee can be found performing with her band Hydrogen Junkbox. She's celebrating her book release on Friday, May 10th, at Bluestockings Bookstore in NYC at 7pm located at 172 Allen St. in NYC.

Our second guest today is Heidi Vanderlee. She is a publicist at Shark Party Media cellist and vocalist at** Early Riser** and former booker at the Chris Gethard Show. She's been a staple in the Brooklyn music scene for quite sometime now. She was part of a music collective in 2010-2012, putting on shows with a feminist perspective, active in politically organizing and booking shows that would donate proceeds to causes for female rights organizations, even helping Pussy Riot at one point!  After that work shifted, she started at the Chris Gethard show, exposing her to comedians, musicians and creative audience members that often participated in the show. Always behind the scene, it was great to get Heidi to talk about herself, her insights into the music industry, feminism and following a creative career. Her band is on tour this May 2019, check out their dates: HERE

  • #64 Lauren Giambrone (Good Fight Herb Co.) / Sehla Graham (Rolling Grocer) "Herbalism and Food Accessibility"

Girl-talking about herbalism, the Catholic Church, and our special herbal concoctions that we got from the Good Fight Herb Co when we visited there a few weeks ago to interview our first guest today, Lauren Giambrone! We play our road-trip interview of Lauren and bring you along for the ride, literally in the car and walking to the shop. Lauren talks about how she got into herbalism and knew pretty quickly it was her calling. She started small by tending herb gardens in the Hudson Valley and doing farmer's markets which eventually grew to opening a brick and mortar location in Hudson and starting a farm school with her soul-sister Mandana called the Wild Gather Herb School. We get to touch on so many important subjects like herbs for Spring, herb circles, cultural appropriation, sustainability and inclusivity in the herbal community. NO more SAGE or PALO SANTO people!!! She's a real gem of a human full of wisdom and passion for healing. Go get some herbal LOVE!

Lauren tipped us to an amazing little grocer around the corner from her shop called the Rolling Grocer which offers groceries at tiered pricing. Sehla "Cece" Graham greeted us with a smile when we walked in and was such a shining, happy face that we wanted to get an interview of her about the progressive and community minded way the store is run. Be inspired by the tiered pricing structure based upon income levels and how that helps to make healthy, organic food accessible to everyone. Let's all do that!!!

Self care brings to you MORE tincture talk...Shana's Over the Hedge tincture helping her to make decisions that best support her and her "work." • #63 Olga Sahej (Blue Lotus Qi Gong) / Aki Goto (Shirotento Orchestra) "The Healing Power of Illness"

Happy Spring! It's 65 degrees here in Kingston NY today. We have a few announcements today, one is that Shana is going to be taking a sabbatical from our show starting May 15th. Her career and painting work is taking off in all directions and she needs to focus in right now, however Theresa will be steering the ship so the show goes on! Our OTHER incredible news is that Theresa got engaged! I know I know! Love is in the air.

Our first guest Olga Sahej, brings us a story of hope as she says "never give up on your body." She is a Russian born musician, coming to America to study, (Suny New Paltz), and because internal stress adapting into American culture developed intense arthritis from extensive piano playing. It seemed impossible to heal, until she worked with a Chinese acupuncturist and Qi Gong Master. Through working hard healing herself she learned about her relationship to music, joy, gratitude and commitment to changing her life. Her self work has now culminated into Blue Lotis Qi Gong, where she helps others move through the physical and emotional challenges of life with the help of QiGong and other healing modalities. She also runs a horse-riding camp for girls with her husband called International Riding Camp which runs from June to August, and she's holding a workshop for Women's Health QiGong at** Anahata April 13th** here in Kingston NY.

Our second guest is Aki Goto. She is a Japanese experimental noise maker and multimedia artist based in the Hudson Valley NY. As she was graduating from an art college in Tokyo she was also struggling with a dissociative disorder which enriched her art but also created a distance between her and the world around her. Recently her partner was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, despite the difficulties and sadness, she chose to listen to the cancer and what it was trying to tell them. They began to "Love Cancer" with its message to slow down. With her "Shirotento Orchestra" (meaning white tent)  she created an event for our Gender-Queer community based on how Japan recognizes gender. In Japan, girl’s day is on 3/3 and boy’s day on 5/5 — so she decided to create Genderqueer’s Day right between those days and celebrate their beauty, creativity, and power. The event is at the Old Dutch Church this Friday at 6pm!  The theme is called Genderqueer's Day and the event details can be found  HERE!

SELF CARE! Self care we talked about the healing nature of herbs and flower essences, something that Aki does from wild flowers found on her land. Perfect timing as next week we share our interview with Lauren Giambrone of the Good Fight Herb Co. and Wildgather Herb School.

Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/, Olga Sahej (Two Voices From Beyond) and audio from the L7 Documentary “Pretend We're Dead”
