We are broadcasting from Radio Kingston on a new FM signal and its HOT HOT HOT! Please have patience with this episode as it may have some crackle, ok ...
Today we have a quick conversation with Martha Frankel about the Woodstock Bookfest. She talks about why she writes, the importance of stories and books and all the goodness of this weekend's festivities!
Our 3 guests today are Shawna Dunworth of Duo Bistro, Erica Brown of Kingston Landtrust, and Ani Kaiser of Birch Body Care . We talk about the recent upstate lifestyle branding on social media, specifically city based social media influencers blogging and instagramming about our neighborhoods, and we ask the question "is it exclusionary and classist" or is it what our struggling economy needs? From the outsiders perspective it looks as though they’re capitalizing on the ‘lifestyle’ in ways that are possibly not ethical and verging on classism and racism. Harsh words, but we want to talk about this!
Self Care time! Talking safe spaces, mental health and hugging trees.
Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

Hello our people! Shana is back from Italy and discusses her feelings about how the #metoo movement is definitely not happening in Italy. Also we discuss how having access to all the best pastries, pasta and bread in the world really helped Shana with her intuitive eating work. Theresa offers up the idea of Oxytocin and how hormonal imbalance can also aid in intuitive eating, she references the Shakti Hour Podcast.
Our first guest today is Danielle Hughes, CEO and founder of Divine Asset Management. She began her career on Wall Street in 1991 at a trading firm. After seeing how women weren't seated at the table in the male dominated finance world she researched and started her own company lifting women up and showing them how to use their own intuition and common sense to build their own 'empire'. She talks about how a "budget is self-care," helping women overcome their fears working in finance and building their own empire without shame. 75% of women usually run the finances for the household and make the majority of purchasing decisions, why are we not seated at the table? We hear the ups and downs of starting her own business and why it's important to take care of yourself first and foremost.
Our second guest today is Diane Reeder. She is a not only a chef, she cooked gourmet food for those in need, landing her a write up in Bon Appetit Magazine. She created a soup kitchen and ran the Queens Galley for ten years serving 10,000 meals per month 100% supported by donations and volunteers before starting the Kingston Candy Bar where she makes candy and desserts creating a positive and creative environment for local families and visitors here in Kingston NY. She talks about the importance of the basic dignity involved with feeding real food to real people and giving them a space to gather and eat with one another. Recently she graduated from The Culinary Institute, something that she started 28 years ago and recently finished her last year because of a gifted paid tuition from someone that believes in her and the work she does in our community. If that doesn't help you understand what a value she is to us, and the people she touches!
Self Care time! Yay, it's the Spring Equinox, Full Super Moon, Aries time, astrological New Year!!! Theresa shares the messages from today's Tarot card, The Wheel of Fortune!

Hello to you, and happy Feb 13th, the day before Valentines Day, which we like to think of as 'self-love day.' Yes, Girl Talk is about Valentine's Day, but not in the way you THINK we're going to talk about it. Theresa had a One Billion Rising event this last weekend, which not only raised money for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, but also the one and only Eve Ensler came and married everyone to themself. Eeeee! You can watch the video of the event speakers HERE. If you want ALL the vows, send us an email.
Our first guest today is Megan Offner of New York Heart Woods. Her company consciously produces lumber, live-edge slabs, furniture and retail displays from fallen and urban Hudson Valley trees. Yet another amazingly creative person coming from Brooklyn, creating a life out of the world of set design and DJ'ing in the city. Yes she was raised in Missoula MT, yes she renovated a crack house in Ocean Hill Brooklyn, yes she researched green building materials, yes she invested in her own education... started her own business in Brooklyn and moved up to the Hudson Valley. Heck YES! She's been clear from the beginning to stay true to her passions and principles. She learned through some ups and downs, a bout with skin cancer and an awareness of the roles the masculine versus the feminine has played in her life to also stay true to her own needs. She's a true model for how we can all both live and work sustainably not only for ourselves but for our world.
Our second guest today is Shana's dear friend Erica Chase-Salerno. Erica is a force, a healer, a writer, a mother, a lover of life and connection. She gifted her community and family with a dynamic and diverse view of the world, working with new mothers with Wyld Acres Healing Arts & Prenatal Communication, working with families as an intuitive, homeschooling her own kids, and always exploring creative projects, outings and activities. It's no wonder that her own backyard labyrinth inspired a dedication to her at The Forsyth Nature Center. Prepare yourselves, Erica talks about the GIFT of Cancer, the CAN in cancer, each new chapter a gift. Ever since we (her friends and family) learned about her cancer, we were not aloud to use certain language. We were instructed to lose the 'fight cancer' lingo, the 'I'm so sorry for you' offerings, instead we were all encouraged to join her in her wonder and joy, her excitement and her desire to share every detail of her experiencing this part of her LIFE. Shana knew that Erica would be down to do an interview to share her story with us one last time, so she sat with her bedside, wheeling the breathing machine into the hallways (although you can still hear it). The entire interview (one hour and 40 minutes) is available to all who what it, you can email: [email protected]. It is meant to offer you a positive story of death, dying, cancer, and what it's like to do the ultimate transition with grace and joy. Erica passed away 6 days after this interview, Feb 7th, 2019.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Erica’s loving memory to her children’s education fund by mailing checks made payable to Michael Chase-Salerno to PO Box 300, Modena, NY 12548. Write “education” in the memo. Online tributes and remembrances may be posted at https://erica.chasal.net.
You can read her obituary HERE.
Her TMI reading starts us off and you can watch that HERE.
Today's show was engineered by Manuel Blas from Radio Kingston. We heard audio from Ashley Knox from this past weekend's 1st Annual Sojourner Truth Walk, and music from our one and only Shana Falana. Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another.

We chat a little bit about Stacey Abrams Speech last night in the Democratic's response to the President's State of the Union address, you can hear her speech HERE. It's soooo good, do yourself a favor and listen to this bold, compassionate and spiritually intelligent woman share about her vision for the United States! She starts off her speech with mentioning a "Happy Lunar New Year!" The feminine is definitely rising again! In honor of the New Moon, we listen to Shana's music clip of her 'Water Chant' from her Bulgarian Women's Choir. It paired well with Theresa's little share about her water blessing ceremony on the New Moon earlier this week and another audio clip we wanted to share from a WINGS episode about water protectors. She shares to inspire us all to think about the water and to remember that it's our job to protect the waters.
Our guests today all know each other, they are all successful business owners in Kingston NY (where we live). They are also mothers, community builders and helping to shape our fast growing town. We sat down to talk to them about running a business in a city that is experiencing a lot of change economically and demographically. They share their philosophy on "competition" and setting boundaries with the people they work with. These women are:
Jen Donovan, owner of Le Shag which opened in 2005. She is a Kingston native, born and raised and claimed a stake in Kingston long before the boutiques and trendy restaurants arrived. After working as a colorist locally, in NYC, on and off Broadway, in photoshoots and film she decided to open her own 'industrial-style salon." Last year she partnered with Glo Spa in Woodstock, NY and and is excited to have recently launched Glo Express in Kingston, NY.
Maria Philippis, the owner of 2 restaurants, Boitsons (2010) and KOVO (2015). She is a single mother, building owner and event planner. She has always been focused on inclusivity with other businesses in uptown, going out of her way to connect with everyone in her community, allowing her high end restaurant to be a community space for various activities in the area.
Elenie Loizou, co-owner of Dietz Stadium Diner (1061). She took over the diner from her family 11 years ago. Elenie grew up in the Kingston area, she is also the mother of 5 (2 sets of twins, just take that in), and she is very active in the community. She is currently the President of KUBA (Kingston Uptown Business Association), director of the Greek and Sunday school of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, president of the Hellenic Women’s Club, Board member of People’s Place, and the list is long... like really... long.
The point is these women are A C T I V E and IN C L U S I V E and in the #nomatterwhatclub. No matter how many businesses are opening around them, no matter what competition is encroaching, using competition to actually thrive, no matter how young their children are, no matter how stressful their days might get, their morals, integrity, and serenity all are in tact. It's incredible to watch because we know them, and this is why we have them on today, we know that you are all multi-taskers and community oriented and we wanted to not only highlight these women but also give you a boost of inspiration!
Self care? Who's got the time?!?!?! It feels like that a bit, but we're making sure we check in on ourselves and give ourself even the tiniest bit so that we don't go too far off the rails. It is the year of the Pig, so we've got lots of enthusiasm to do all the amazing work we are set to do!!!

She began her healing journey by making paintings that have been displayed, sold and published in Europe and New York State. Presently, she divides her time between her New York City and her new ‘barn’ home in Rhinebeck. She is also the creator of several fine art Colour Guides that are distributed through artist material stores world wide under the name of “MAGIC PALLETTE.” Dee talked about the importance of staying in the place of positivity versus anger or frustration, and how that helps her to keep moving forward.
Self care!!! It's astrology time...in honor of Monday's New Moon, Theresa shares this month's astrology from Astrology King...ready for it? Hey hey HEYYYYY! It's our one year anniversary to us! We’ve been bringing you 2 interviews of incredible females EVERY WEEK for a year.. and we’re going for another season 🌘 finally launching the podcast, including street interviews, road trips and more... Our joke to have a show of us laughing became a reality, AMAZING! We are so grateful for all you listeners, hope you keep tuning in! Theresa talks about her experience during the Women's March last weekend and shares a quote from Elizabeth Cady Stanton in honor of the women out there working hard to keep the movement going. "I think if women would indulge more freely in vituperation, they would enjoy ten times the health they do. It seems to me they are suffering from repression. So long as women are slaves, men will be knaves."
Today we are celebrating with our fellow Radio Kingston Hosts and it's a fun, wild ride. Beetle: "I’m Beetle. I’m a writer, blogger, novelist, sometime performer, and hysterically infrequent embodiment of the things most people expect of me." Please watch this clip of Beetle performing at TMI #blackstories matter and if you need a good laugh this one. Freedomwalker "I’m FreedomWalker. I’m a certified creative art therapist and an accredited practitioner of the healing arts. I’m spiritual, a fine artist and a writer. I’m happy to share my gifts and passion with the listeners." Here's a clip from FreedomWalker talking about how she received her name. Beetle and Freedomwalker have a show at Radio Kingston: The Black Meta. Julie Novak: "Julie is a radio host at Radio Kingston, No One Like You! She has been performing around the New York Tri-State area for the last 15 years. Her comedy combines a keen look at the politics of queerness, gender variance, and everything in between. She studied comedy and improv at Second City in Chicago and Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NYC. She has performed stand-up in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. She participated, along with such comedians as Lewis Black and Kathy Griffin, in the Serious Laughs Comedy Festival in Kingston, NY headlining “Queerstock”, a gay and lesbian cabaret. In 2010, Novak co-founded TMI Project, a non-profit organization offering transformative memoir workshops and performances where people learn to tell the parts of their stories that they usually leave out." Julie is MC'ing a benefit for a new Kingston recovery center, Samadhi, this weekend, January 27th at the Colony. AND join us all as we celebrate the one year anniversary of her show, No One Like You, February 23rd at BSP in Kingston, NY. Tickets available soon...be there and be square! Today we chatted about oh so many things from overcoming fear to the challenges of living in a society where we are both finding our unique tribes and allies yet also trying to celebrate our differences at the same time.
