Idling In The Impala | a ride through SPN fandom and fanfiction

Sandra and Karlee discussed their fanfic journey some weeks back. That led them to want to delve into AO3 and provide some tips and tricks they’ve learned over the years as users. Lucky you - they made a video. Maybe lucky you - they had to break the episode into two parts because there was so much to discuss.

Podfic Narration Time – “Pine sweat (DROUGHT)” by applecrumbledore

Thanks to Roni (applecrumbledore) for permission to narrate their incredible story. It will probably take a bit before it’s all done. But, here’s Chapter 2 - DROUGHT.

Please visit the fic on AO3 and give it a kudo and comment - it deserves a ton of praise!

Dean Winchester/Sam Winchester

Summary:

Sam watched Dean hack up firewood with his hatchet. The magically-induced heat wave had his shirt soaked with sweat.

“Did you ever have a, uh… experimental phase?” Sam smacked his lips, trying to think of a diplomatic way to phrase it. “That kid—by which I mean you—has been staring. At me. Kind of a lot.”

(Sam and Dean get sent back to 1996 and go on a hunt with their teenaged selves. The kids don't know who they are.)

Don’t mind Sandra’s scatterbrained intro and inability to schedule episodes properly. When this episode drops, Sandra is preparing to leave for the Creation Con in DC in a couple of days.

Will you be attending the con? She’ll be wearing some Idling merch, so she should be relatively easy to spot. If you are a podcast listener, stop her and say hello. Her introverted self will open up (even if she’s masked up)!

Enjoy some outtakes while Karlee gets saddled with holding down the podcast fort.

Sandra’s been doing this thing lately with her fanfic writing. She’ll get an idea for a one-shot, but before you know it, the story has gotten all plotty, and the word count has run wild. So, Karlee gave her a challenge. Write a one-shot, one-scene, and keep it under 3K. But Karlee, the ever-loving friend that they are, agreed to have a go with the challenge as well. Then, Karlee’s beta, runawaydr3amer, provided a prompt, all agreed on the terms… and now here they are to talk about the fallout… um, fruits of their labor.

This is the episode for you if you are a fellow angsty writer who likes to punish themselves. If you are a fellow reader who wants to hear about a writer’s angst and self-punishment in pursuit of a completed work, this is the episode for you. And, yeah, they may have given themselves a short word count, but nobody said anything about keeping this episode at a respectable length.

Have you been curious about Prompt Memes? Especially the kinky ones? Sandra and Karlee came across SPN Masquerade’s Sultry Summer Swing and had to find out more. Two of the SPN Masquerade moderators, Amy and Ash, graciously came on for a chat about kinky prompts. The SPN Masquerade has been around for a while. They create a safe online inclusive space without fear of shame and promote exploring your kinky, creative side under a mask of anonymity. An excellent discussion was had about fanfiction, fandom, and paramount questions like everyone’s stance on Jensen’s mustache debut at NCcon.

Find out more about SPN Masquerade and contact the mods with any questions on tumblr.

Sandra and Karlee hope everyone had a great summer in the Northern Hemisphere! Labor Day celebrations are winding down in the US, and everyone’s gearing up for school days. In between all this, Sandra and Karlee are taking a little break. But no worries, they’ll return next week for a full Idling in the Impala episode!

Sandra and Karlee wax nostalgic about their fanfic journeys over the decades (yes, sigh, decades). This deep dive episode came from Sandra’s stumble on the YouTube video “The Life and Death of Fandom Platforms” by Casey Fiesler. Give it a watch and check out all the research and reference materials in its description. It’s a fascinating exploration of the rise and fall of various fandom platforms.

Let Sandra and Karlee know what your fandom journey has been like and which platforms you’ve been a part of.

Speaking of fandom communities, if you are a lover of SPN FanFic - and come on, you’ve gotta be if you listen to these two ramble on about the topic - and you aren’t a part of it already, give SPN FanFic Pond a try!

Sandra and Karlee couldn’t get Pine sweat by applecrumbledore out of their collective FanFic brain. Sandra took a chance and reached out to ask if they might want to come onto the podcast to talk about their writing. And, they agreed!

Roni (applecrumbledore) was super generous with their time to discuss the story. There was no need to take them to task about anything! Sit back and enjoy!

WARNING - Sandra and Karlee are spoiling this story from the jump. They are encouraging listeners who enjoy Wincest to read it first and come back to hear the interview.
