While family is meant to be your first home, for many queer Africans, it is also the first place where they feel silenced, erased, or threatened. This episode is for all queer people who understand that sometimes the deepest wounds come from your biological family rather than strangers.

We're going to jump right into one of the most exhausting things that queer people have to deal with: being asked to explain ourselves all the time. This can come from homophobic uncles at family gatherings or random strangers.

This one's for all the queer Africans who were told to tone it down so they could fit in. This one is also for everyone who hid pictures of themselves, changed their voice, and didn't talk at family gatherings because they thought that would keep them safe. Respectability politics are control, not protection. They don't stop violence, rejection, or gossip; they just make it easier to erase you. They will still call you an abomination even if you follow their rules.

This is meant for LGBTQIA+ Africans, who have been told that their existence is unimportant and that it comes from the West. It is for people who know what their rights are and won't give in any more. African governments, religious groups, and traditional gatekeepers don't dislike queer people because they think we are immoral; they dislike us because we can't be controlled, don't apologize, and can't be governed.

This one is for all the queer people who were told to be quiet, turn down their light, or wait for permission to shine. This is for people who have been through enough pain and finally chose joy as a way to fight back.

This episode is for all queer Africans and queer people of African descent who have been told that being silent equates to being respectful and that your presence, your love, and your life must be “private” to be accepted.Silence is not culture; it is control; it is shame masquerading as tradition; and it is erasing us.
