This week we had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Nicia Whitcomb.

Nicia was born and raised in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She was adopted as an infant and growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood, she always knew she was different than her peers. She graduated from Grace Christian High School and spent a few years upon graduation working in the church.

Over time, Nicia took the time to put herself first and truly focused on who she is as a human and what she wants and believes. Currently, Nicia resides in Cincinnati, Ohio - where she is a Business Pro at Apple and also helps as an assistant coach for the Boys Varsity soccer team at Holmes High School.

This week we have the honor to sit down and speak with Aaliyah Christine.

Aaliyah was born in Miami, Florida but spent most of her childhood in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Aaliyah ended up graduating from Holmes High School in 2013. Upon her graduation, she wanted to branch out for college and attended Bowling Green State University.

Aaliyah’s journey at BGSU was filled with many ups and downs, but taught her so much about who she is as a person. In fact, she took some time away from college and retuned a few years ago to Northern Kentucky University where she is studying Psychology with a minor in Addiction and Human Services.

As she is close to wrapping up her bachelors degree as a full time student, Aaliyah still finds the time to work as a Behavior Health Specialist, be a mentor, volunteer in her community, but most importantly continue to write her FIRST BOOK!

Aaliyah’s story is powerful and she is a great role model for many people! You do not want to miss out on her story.

This week we have the honor to meet, 2022 Miss Kentucky - Hannah Edelen.

Hannah was born and raised in Springfield, Kentucky. Growing up in a small town, she wanted to branch our for college and decided to attend Northern Kentucky University as a first generation student. At NKU, Hannah wore numerous hats in many organizations such as: Student Body President, Board of Regents, and was also apart of Kappa Delta.

Upon graduating from NKU, Hannah joined Teach For America while she obtained her Masters Degree in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Kentucky. Hannah spent the last three years teaching 6th grade social studies at Holmes Middle School, but with her title as Miss Kentucky she is taking some time away from teaching in the classroom.

Currently, Hannah is studying for her PhD in Educational Studies and resides in Covington, KY and is currently running for Covington Board of Education. She has a heart of gold and wants an equitable education for all of Covington students. So, you Covington peeps out there - vote Hannah Edelen this November!

During this conversation, we learn more about Hannah’s role as Miss Kentucky, but most importantly we take a deep dive into her upbringing, her passion for reading, her campaign for Covington’s BOE and SO MUCH more.

Jan’a was born and raised in Covington, Kentucky and is an alumnus of Holmes High School. At the age of 28, Ja’nae is a published author and a business owner. Growing up writing was an escape for Jan’a mentally. It allowed her to freely express herself and truly helped save her life.

Jan’a started off her career writing poetry, but then decided to switch to Urban Fiction. In 2014, she released her top series - Taking Wifey to The Grave” and a year later launch a sub company Jan’a Sullivan Presents under best-selling authors David Weaver and Shan.

To this date Jan’a has over 25 urban fiction books published including: Bella and Braxton: A Hood Love Story that landed on Amazon’s best sellers list! Fast forward to 2022, and Jan’a is now transitioning into screen writing and working on turning her books into film.

During this conversation, we learn all about Mrs. Sullivans journey to becoming a published author and the obstacles she has faced throughout her life. Most importantly, we figure out what ignites her why.

This week we get to know Mr. Carlos Marshall.

Carlos was born in Guatemala and for the first four years of his life, that is where he lived until he was adopted. Then he came to the United States with his new family! Growing up in the United States came with some challenges for Carlos, but it has never stopped him from pushing forward.

Currently, Carlos is a senior in High School where he attends Ignite Institute. Which is a STEM High School in Northern Kentucky. There are two things that Carlos loves the most: Christ and Soccer. Both play a significant factor in his life.

Carlos plays soccer for Kings Hammer ECNL Regional (Elite Clubs National League) Team which is one of the highest levels of competitive youth soccer, while also playing soccer for Scott High School.

During this conversation, we learn about how Carlos is much more than a soccer player and even though at a young age, he is much wiser than most would expect of a teenager.

This week we have the honor to hear Nicole (Winkler) Howard tell her story.

Nicole was born and raised in Covington, Kentucky! She is an alumnus of Holmes High School - upon graduating high school, at the age of 18; Nicole experienced an unexpected pregnancy. Little did she know, her daughter Juliet, saved her life.

Being a single mother at such a young age taught Nicole many life lessons. There are so many stereotypes for teen moms - but that did not stop Nicole from conquering her goals. Through all the ups and downs, Nicole obtained her bachelors degree from Northern Kentucky University and her Masters Degree from the University of Louisville both in Social Work.

Currently, Nicole is a mother of two daughters, a wife, and a licensed Social Worker. She serves as a Case Manager at the Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services.

Nicole is a true testimony of breaking down stereotypes and barriers placed upon people. She is one the strongest people I have ever encountered.
