«Salito al trono dopo la disfatta di Novara, rifiutò di abolire lo Statuto, incoraggiando il governo “a picchiare egualmente sui rossi come sui neri”. Quando si accorse che con la legge elettorale vigente, per cui votavano solo i borghesi e non i contadini, vinceva la sinistra, minacciò: “darò il suffragio universale e andrò io stesso a parlare agli elettori”. Cattolico devoto, non ebbe paura di varare le leggi Siccardi, che eliminavano i privilegi del clero, e di far arrestare l’arcivescovo di Torino, che aveva invitato i cattolici a disobbedire alla legge. Diventato il primo re d’Italia, sposò in seconde nozze la sua amante, la “bella Rosina” analfabeta, figlia di un sergente, scappando appena possibile dal Quirinale per starsene in pantofole con lei.»

A èStoria 2022 il professor Barbero racconta di come dalla tragedia della Grande Guerra si arrivò, pochi anni dopo alla Marcia su Roma.

“La ricaduta sul modo stesso di percepire la realtà e la società delle stragi della Grande Guerra: dagli anni del conflitto, uscì un’Europa profondamente cambiata, più incline ad accettare la violenza come strumento politico, meno disposta a credere nelle rassicuranti idee guida del XIX secolo. Una società pronta, paradossalmente, ad un’altra guerra.”

La prima scrittrice femminista della storia era un'italiana, anche se scriveva in francese. Era la figlia di Tommaso da Pizzano, medico e astrologo del re di Francia Carlo V; quando il padre si accorse del suo talento, nonostante l'opposizione della madre la incoraggiò a studiare e a scrivere.

“Uccidere in nome della fede è un tema di scottante attualità, in riferimento al terrorismo islamico, ma per secoli è stato riferito alle Crociate. Se i cristiani delle origini prendevano sul serio il comandamento “Non uccidere”, al punto che ci fu chi affrontò il martirio pur di non combattere, le Crociate provocarono un drammatico ribaltamento di questi principi, sulla spinta d’una convinzione popolare (che uccidere gli infedeli fosse gradito a Dio) cui la Chiesa, nonostante le iniziali perplessità, non seppe opporsi, e che provocò, insieme alla conquista della Terrasanta, anche i primi pogrom antiebraici d’Europa.
