Imago Dei

Two words: Imago Dei - the image of God. In this week’s episode of Locker room we are talking about identity.

Identity is something the enemy loves to distort in men’s lives.  Identity is foundational.  Who we think we are cuts a channel for how we live, how we interact with others, how we interact with God, how we view our vocation, how we handle success and failure, and how we view others.

So what is it?  Where does our identity come from?  How do we know that we have value, significance and worth? It’s who God says that we are!  You are who your Creator says that you are!  And it’s the only thing that will satisfy you, anchor you; it’s the only firm foundation that we can build our lives on.

Who would you say is your celebrity lookalike?  How would you define the word “identity”? Why is it critical to have a proper perspective on where our identity comes from?

Read Proverbs 23:7, Philippians 4:8, and Colossians 3:1-4. What or who has influenced your perception of who you are? How has this influenced you positively? How has this influenced you negatively?

Read Proverbs 30:31, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, and 2 Corinthians 4:16. How have you attempted to find your identity in your appearance? What has God taught you in the process?

Read 2 Corinthians 5:9, Galatians 1:10, and 1 Thessalonians 2:3-4. How have you attempted to find your identity in people-pleasing? What has God taught you in the process?

Read Matthew 5:14-16, Philippians 3:12-14, and Colossians 3:23-24. How have you attempted to find your identity in achievement, performance, or success? What has God taught you in the process?

Read Genesis 1:26-27, Psalm 139:13-18, and 1 John 3:1-3. The Bible is clear on where we should get our identity from. It’s not rooted in the earthly things of this world; it’s anchored in who God our Father says we are. Why is it so tempting to find our identity in anyone, anything, or anywhere except God?

Read John 3:16-17, Romans 5:6-11, and Romans 8:38-39. God’s love for us is on full display in these verses. When we begin to understand the lengths God went through to restore us back into His family, it should radically transform our relationship with Him and with others. Why is it difficult for us to believe in God's love for us?

Read Romans 8:14-17, Galatians 3:26-29, and Ephesians 1:3-14. Some Biblical scholars say the apostle Paul references the phrase “in Christ” or some variation over 100 times throughout his writings. Why is it important for us to understand our new identity in Christ? What lies does the enemy tell you to keep you from moving this biblical truth from your head to your heart? How do we combat these lies?
