Today I spoke with Garland Nixon about the apparently illogical behaviour of our governments, especially in western Europe. What is it that compels politicians here to act in ways that seem so irrational and counterproductive? Why are they increasingly setting democratic norms aside and replacing them with outright authoritarian and even fascistic measures?

Putting all these things in the context of the global capitalist crisis of overproduction, we talked about how the way the capitalists behave today is not an anomaly. The anomaly was the postwar period of social peace and welfare concessions in the west from 1945-75, not the 'neoliberal' shift that followed it as welfare reforms and other concessions were being unpicked.

We asked what is it that really underpins the Maga movement, and speculated as to how long workers might continue to put their faith in Donald Trump as the harbinger of the change they desperately desire.

And we looked at the role of the immigration debate in distracting and dividing workers; in misdirecting their anger as conditions of life decay and inequality becomes more glaring and obscene.

For how much longer will we fall into the trap of arguing over the conditions of our enslavement and fighting one another over the scraps from the masters' table – a table whose contents were all provided by the workers of the world?
