On the eve of my birthday we talk about the final disillusionment I had with American culture after joining the middle class suburban normie wife life and felt like I had been teleported to a different planet, a planet just for breeders. We also talk about the outliers of whom there are plenty in our generation — the opposite of this suburban breeder world — the urban class that has voluntary sterilized itself…and how all this came about.

We also discuss the core of Rachel’s research: Noahidism, a new global religion for non-Jews that’s being spread by messianic zionists, including Chabad rabbis, in support of this future Israelite theocracy.

Along the way we discuss the religious origins of zionist ideas, the unbroken chain linking secular and religious zionism, and the increasing radicalization of Jewish society in the direction of this messianic movement. This whole thing is a lot less fringe than you might think.

Late at night in bed we talk about Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed new film. Unlike most people out there, we were impressed and touched by it. Coppola dissects American society and its media propaganda machine only the way foreigners usually managed to do in the past — people like Paul Verhoeven with Starship Troopers and Robocop or Neil Blomkamp with Elysium. Maybe that’s why most mainstream critics hated it. It’s both wildly experimental for a big budget film and also classical, almost neorealist, in its humanistic ethos…taken from David Graeber, who Coppola was inspired by.

For an iconic Hollywood director and a minor oligarch in his own right, Coppola comes off as a saint and a ray of light aka Valis, trying to break through the Black Iron Prison to get to the people’s minds and hearts. Unfortunately he was not very successful at it since people’s brains have been so rotten out by our bread and circus entertainment complex.

That’s the first half of our talk. At the end we talk about Sofia Coppola, who seemed to inherit her dad’s outlook on life and Hollywood and is often hated as well.

We got out of bed to talk to artist and filmmaker Andrew Norman Wilson about his work and his viral essay in the Baffler about the impoverished jet-setting life of an artist without a trust fund. He’s now turned the essay into a talk/stand up show he performs in New York. What he talks about is relevant to all media precariat — not just visual artists but journalists, filmmakers, writers, adjunct lecturers. He’s got great comedic way of relating what that “art life” is like…if you don’t have generational wealth propping you up.

A few notes.

Evgenia compared Norm’s essay/stand up show to Chris Morris’s work. There’s Blue Jam, a cult radio show that Evgenia listens to as therapy when she feels down. And then there’s Jam, the TV version of the show. Chris Morris also wrote a suicide journalist column under a pseudonym for the Observer…
