In this bonus episode, Carys and Gary are joined by Huda Jawad from The Three Hijabis. Huda tells us how she created, along with Shaista Aziz and Amna Abdullatif, a petition calling for racists to be banned from football matches for life after the Euros 2021 final and the racist abuse the three Black England players (Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford) received after the game. This ended up going viral, with the then Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) committing to extending banning orders to those convicted of racist abuse online, as well as mentioning the petition during a keynote speech during the same week.
Gary, Carys and Huda discuss national identity, supporting England in sports, and how people of colour navigate this journey and how racism and tribalism in sport and society, make it hard for Black and Brown people to really feel English and cheering England on, when they don't feel welcome.
