  • COVID and the Classroom - What are Black Educators Saying?

THE SEASON ONE CLOSER! I can't believe it! One whole season done! I decided to end with this conversation because it was just so timely. I will post my audience look back episode as a bonus on Monday.

Listen as three Black educators from three different states talk about what their school districts are doing in the wake of a pandemic and the need to educate our children. What happens to kids whose parents need to work? What about access to technology? How do they feel about the possibility of returning to the classroom?

Listen to their view and what they said they would do if they were called back to the classroom today. This is a candid and honest perspective from educators trying to do the job they love while staying safe too.

  • Still on this Journey - Me, My Daughter and Her Mental Illness

This one was tough. Harder to record than I thought it would be. As we begin wrapping up Season 1, several listeners said hearing my story, of raising a child with a mental illness, really resonated with them. So, today is an update of how things are going with my girl.

It has been a really hard few months and talking about it was emotional but helpful. I hope those who listen have more empathy for those of us on this journey. And for my sisters in the struggle, I am praying for you!

  • A Black Girl's View

This is me guys! Talking about my feelings about what's been going on over the past few months. It's been a heavy weight and I have loved having the podcast to listen to others and know I am not alone.

    A few mentions:

In the podcast I mention a story about a police officer who lost her pension and her job after trying to stop a colleague from using a chokehold on a black man. Here is the story:

I also mention my blog post from a few months ago about This Land. Just in case you want to read it:

  • Racially Profiling You with Your Name

Listen as two members of my tribe, Jo-Ann Taveras and Amber Conage talk about how their

names have been perceived, the comments people have made and what happened when the

person expected for the interview or loan meeting, didn't match the name on paper.

Do you think companies, banks and businesses use names as a way to racially profile applicants?

When we allow this to influence something as simple as what we name our children, are

we allowing them some control? I would love to hear your thoughts.

You can also click on the link below, it gives a great breakdown of systemic racism, including what

    we are talking about today.

  • A Black Man in America

This is a powerful episode with two men I admire very much, my husband Ron and David, the best man in our wedding (and one of his closest friends). Hear them tell gripping stories of encounters with the police, their fears for their children, "friendships" lost over Black Lives Matter and the change they hope to see.

This is one of the most emotional episodes I've ever done.

**PLEASE NOTE: There is one use of the "N" word as they tell the story of an experience that they had with a classmate.**

  • Don't You See Me? - White Privilege in America

Listen as two members of my tribe talk about white privilege, and how it felt to be victims of it. Although this episode was recorded before the current unrest, it was so timely and relevant that I wanted to include it in our Race in America series.

I tell a few stories of my own experience as well. How has it impacted your life? I want to hear from you. Email me at: [email protected]
