The situation in Maui is absolutely apocalyptic. Wildfires have decimated the island, obliterating one historic town, with countless homes destroyed and at least 36 people confirmed dead. It is, say officials, an unprecedented situation. And it's nowhere close to the level during the height of the pandemic, but Covid cases are up. It seems this summer, like the last few years, the month of August is seeing a spike.
