‘It All Begins With A Song.’  That’s what the forces behind the Nashville Songwriters Association International have come to believe.  Over forty years ago, a group of songwriters came together over lunch and came up with the idea of a songwriters association.  Today, NSAI includes over 45-hundred members from all over the world who come together to promote awareness of their combined cultural contributions as well as to protect those contributions.   If you’d like to become a member of NSAI, you can get tons of information online at www.NashvilleSongwriters.com.   We ourselves headed over to the NSAI studios to sit down with a few members to see what this incredible organization is all about.

John Carter isn’t taking the normal route to becoming a country music star.  While his star is still rising, you won’t find him bussing tables or working construction.  During his eleven years in the Marine Corp, John taught himself to play the guitar while working as a helicopter mechanic.  These days, John performs many nights each week but still keeps his day job as an airplane mechanic at BNA Nashville International Airport until he can concentrate full time on a country career.  Kelly headed out to his hangar just off the runway to see what inspires him.

One of the hottest days of the year brought us out on the streets to check out the latest music video for the Grascals, one of bluegrass music’s most awarded groups. ‘The Last Train to Clarksville’ is the lead single off the Grascals’ fourth album ‘The Famous Lefty Flynn’s, and they jumped from location to location all around town to shoot their version of this classic from the Monkees. 

Billy Dean first gained national attention after appearing on the television talent competition ‘Star Search.’  He’s since recorded eight studio albums and a greatest hits package, many of which were certified gold.  Although he never had a number one hit on his own, he and Allison Krauss joined Kenny Rogers as guest vocalists on Kenny’s number one ‘Buy Me A Rose’ in 2000.  Billy reunited with Kenny on a trip overseas, and we sat down with him at home to hear all about his recent travels. Although Billy is still performing and writing, he’s also into other ventures for corporate marketing.  His ‘Song Sessions’ combines songwriting and corporate team building exercises.

Flynnville Train is a band of brothers in music who produce a sound and a show that will hit their fans like a freight train.  This Indiana-based group has a sound channeling an era of southern rock reminiscent of the 1970’s.  Their big break came on tour opening for Toby Keith, and were signed to his Show Dog roster for their debut album.  Now with a new direction and a sophomore album ‘Redemption,’ this group is touring constantly while ‘Preachin’ to the Choir.’

Steel Magnolia blossomed one late night in Nashville’s famous Printer’s Alley.  Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott took to the stage and sang together for the very first time in a karaoke bar, singing Air Supply’s ‘I’m All Out of Love.’  Since that fateful first night together on stage, the duo is now known as Steel Magnolia. Steel Magnolia signed to Big Machine Records, home to Taylor Swift and now Rascal Flatts.  We heard the buzz about them and caught up with them on the set of their latest music video ‘Just By Being You (Halo and Wings).’

The Nashville Rhythm and Race Festival rolled into town to share the ultimate NASCAR experience with fans of all ages.  Colorful NASCAR haulers pulled into Limelight geared up for a night of good times and great music for an awesome cause.  Country music artists and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers were on hand to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Professional Race Truck Transporters Association, or PRTTA, makes it possible for race teams to travel across the country to give fans a behind-the-scenes look into NASCAR’s state-of-the-art haulers.  It looked like an adventurous evening.
