Our guests are childhood friends from Buffalo, NY.  Maddy Smith is a national touring stand-up comedian & recurring cast member of ‘Wild ‘N Out’ on MTV & VH1 since season 14.  She is joined by Towi Kuberka, who “knew Maddy was the funniest person way back in middle-school.”  Little did Towi know that she has quite the knack for this podcasting thing!

We talk about our concern for kids today & iPad brain, what it was like for them growing up in a simpler time of bikes & wall-ball, and we hear about Towi & Maddy’s ‘Buffalo Jackass’ video they made as kids.  Maddy questions Sean about inflation & the meaning of money, while advocating for life as a Victorian child.  From processed foods turning Americans into rats, to our widespread passive complicity in technology made from child-slave-materials — if we learn one thing here, it’s that men are hollow shells who fail to build community.

We had a blast on this one.  From discussing the cesspool that was the Chuck E Cheese ball pit, to why McDonalds had to get rid of their ball pit after a mid-80s snake incident, to lighter topics like Chesarae’s favorite older coworkers as a CNA, and the time an old lady brought a DVD into work, so she could go home and watch her older coworker’s much younger tits make their appearance as an extra in some forgettable film.  Legendary. 

Covid era craziness — remember that?  Vaccination stations, alerts on our phones, we look back on how easily we all seemed to accept our 1984 reality, often with open arms & accusations for any rogue sneezes or coughs encountered after a night totally not having fun (was not allowed).  Makeup is just well-marketed minerals from the ground.  Chesarea shares how her first time putting on makeup in middle school may have (unintentionally) led her to become a comic, after the boy she liked at the time made a comment about her eyes.  Men suck.  But that’s nothing new.

Jen Wise is an improv comedian who is BIG into astrology & came to TSS ready to booze up her starbucks refresher with an alcoholic seltzer — a move so white I was truly ashamed I hadn’t seen it once in my life before now.  We talk about Jen’s astrology knowledge, why you have to know your actual birth time, and how her “fuck-it” list after her divorce, coupled with a grandparents funeral in Nebraska, led to a fling with a younger, well-beard-endowed Nebraskan man. 

Jen tells me her theory of how Trump came into power.  I don’t want to spoil anything, but it involves Voldemort & somehow a US olympian in the pommel horse.  Who knew!?  We hear about Jen’s spiritual experience during a Reiki session, how she met her spirit guide on another astral plane altogether, & Jen tells me how God told her not to go to church. 

She wasn’t allowed to like Taylor Swift when she was married, so I let her show off her once closeted Swifty knowledge to bring me fully up to speed on the “Tea,” as it were.  Big machine records, Scooter Braun — Is any of this REAL?!

Our guest is a stand-up comedian from Louisiana, who has been performing for over 13 years, and was recently promoted to regular at Comedy Works — Lane Lonion!

Sean mispronounces Lane’s last name, because of course.  What a hot start.  We hear about Lane growing up in Louisiana, his younger brother who owns an MMA gym in LA, and Lane explains how baseball was a challenge, because he kept swinging at the wrong ball.  A four-sport athlete, but not great at any of them (his words), we hear how Lane broke his arm for the second time in high school football when his squad went up against St. Martensville. 

We learn Coloradans have a certain ‘bitchyness’ to their accent, if we have any accent at all.  Sean’s CIA tactics don’t work on Lane, all non-cajun cajun jokes are awful, and we learn how the schools  literally beat the French out of his grandparents' generation. 

This one’s got it all, cause Lane’s got it all.  Thankful to yuk it up with him on this one.

Josh educated me about lots during our hang.  And thank goodness, because lord knows I need it!  From blood quantums & the differences in tribal membership between nations, to British comedy & their specialty ‘panel’ shows, to the origins of the Tomahawk chop at American sporting events & why it has always NOT been okay; strap in for some banter with one of the best!  

Joshua holds a degree in economics from Fort Lewis University in Durango. During his time there he started performing stand-up comedy & built a scene with his friends who together all founded ‘Dead Room’.  We discussed the origins of his Fringe Fest idea and how trauma and laughter are inextricably tied, while sharing some stories of grief.  

What did we learn on this one?  Well, Josh would do just about anything for a free car (doesn’t even have to be a nice car!), and I think it’s safe to say he has a blossoming career in the entertainment industry with that mindset. 

Genuinely thankful for this hang with Josh — the tallest of thanks to him for being so generous to come on in the midst of the long lead up to Fringe Fest in Edinburgh this August.

We talked about how John first became interested in martial arts, how he minored in Japanese while studying at CU Boulder, and how though he may look like it, it’s actually his dad who loves trains.  Don’t believe me?  Take it up with Amtrak!  John shares about his own mental health journey and his frustration around the trend of young people seeking out a severe mental health diagnosis.  We learn John is a descendant of college football royalty, Bobby Bowden.  A strong breeze must’ve caught John’s apple when it fell off the tree, but who’s to say?  Maybe he’s hiding some intense defensive schemes behind all that trauma. 

John tells me that he learned how women work from his older sister and I offer John whatever help I can to successfully navigate dating apps to find “the one.”  Sean shares a few “bedroom tips” to John (coachable) by putting them into extended metaphors about stand-up comedy.
