I had the absolute pleasure having Nurjahan Boulden join this weeks podcast episode! Nurjahan is a belly dancer who has been dancing since she was a child. Growing up, belly dancing was a large part of Nurjahan's culture and everyday life in her family. She has always had a deep passion for belly dancing, however, it was not until after being involved in a tragic gun violence experience at a night club, Nurjahan found herself in a position in life she never expected. After being shot in her leg and witnessing death right before her eyes, Nurjahan had to relearn life again, not just psychically, but mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and sensually. Through belly dancing, community support circles, storytelling, and pushing herself to dance in public spaces again, Nurjahan has found the strength and power in her pain to rise again and share her story with the world.
To connect with Nurjahan you can find her on:
“I couldn’t do what I used to do so I decided to just do it badly. And I did it badly, and I did badly, and I did it badly, and I let all the shame come up until I started being able to walk again.”
“I started belly dancing again and reconnecting with this sense of sensuality that I had pushed down because I had thought that was the piece that got me in trouble; being a woman, living in this body, and showing my beauty and sensuality in public places.”
“Me being in a public space and filling up space with my body is not sinful, is not disgusting or disturbing, is not deserving of consequence. It’s deserving of love. I feel like we have to show that to each other and ourselves in order to change society’s view of it.”
“It’s not my hair. And it’s not my dresses. And it’s not my moves. What you want is to feel as good in your body as I am feeling in my body in this moment; that’s what’s drawing you to me right now.”
“It’s actually anchoring yourself in who you already are. In what you already have and what you can already do. And then be willing to fail and stretch and get comfortable with the discomfort of navigating your body as it changes. That’s the value. I think that’s what draws people into belly dancing and the practice I do.”
“If you keep showing up, success is inevitable.”
