The Higashi’s have been believing in us for the last 17 years. It is an immensely powerful relationship to have when mentors push you beyond what you believe for yourself because they see your potential. They have walked with us through our failures and celebrated our successes through many seasons.

We wouldn’t be here today without them. They lead with kindness; the kind that changes people. They invite others into their ohana. They love deeply. They spread joy and aloha by simply sharing life, all the parts of it.

We forged a friendship on the playground, and in her treehouse as first graders. We have journeyed through the jungle gym of life ever since.

When you work in admissions you are the first face that impacts decision making for prospective students. It is a heavy burden to bear and Sara Fusilier does it with grit and grace.

My DAY 4 of The Kindness Games shoutout goes out to her and the team at McMaster Divinity College.

She led me with kindness when I was the frantic wife of an incoming student who didn't put the proper postage on paperwork traveling from Honolulu, HI to Hamilton, ON. Her steadfast assurance in the people behind the process made all the difference.

We've journeyed together ever since. I was just a student's wife when we became friends. Then we got to be colleagues on staff, and first time mothers together.

You never know what that first impression will lead to. May we begin with kindness.

He loves and sees each person's unique potential. He leads people from experience and empathy. He knows the intricate needs of people because he’s done the hard work of getting to know himself.

He’s been leading me with kindness in big and small ways for three decades.

When I first texted him about starting a business he immediately replied back, “LET’S GO!!!” He’s one of those people that Tim talked about yesterday. “It is so important to have people around you who push you to be your best.”

DAY 2 of my Kindness Games journey shoutout goes to none other than my husband Will Kapahu.

Was I ready for marriage? NO

Are we opposite in many ways? YES

Are we the same people that we married 12 years ago? NO

Have we learned to love each other one day at a time? YES

Marriage is worthwhile work. I don’t know if anyone is really ready for it. You live independent lives until the moment you don’t. How can you be ready for two sinful, selfish, works in progress to be united under one roof?

It takes time to become one. It takes humility, tons of humility! It takes surrender, forgiveness and work!

Once you think you’ve got a rhythm going something unexpected happens forcing you to reimagine what you thought you knew. You begin building a new rhythm.

Last year my husband asked me, “Do you want to start a business?” I said, “yes!”

We are rebuilding a rhythm for this season. We are on a journey that will last a lifetime.

Linda Shevkenek, an MA licensed counselor from Canada, has focused the last decade of her practice on helping couples and individuals address sexual addiction. Sexual addiction is not particular to gender, religion, culture, or status. It usually begins early in life and, if not addressed, causes devastating results throughout adulthood. She shares the real work of crisis management and building back bridges of trust. She talks about what a lifetime of hiding does to a person's heart, mind, and soul, explaining how brain chemistry and bio neuro- pathways shape our habits, fears, and conversations. 

Addressing suspicious behavior, gaslighting, and trying to control a situation are realities addressed in this conversation as well.   Betrayal, pain, fear, and shame are real parts of the journey. But there is also space for courage, restoration and freedom. There is nothing easy about addressing sexual addiction, but there is hope when we make space to begin the conversations towards help, health, and wholeness.

She is a trained EMDR specialist and, in the last decade, has focused on helping couples and individuals address sexual addiction. She staffs the YWAM school of counseling at University of the Nations in Kona, HI, and churches and counseling centers in Canada.

There are times we enter with nothing left to give, but we still step inside. Something powerful and unifying happens when we enter the bedroom naked and unashamed.  

Becoming rule breakers is a conversation about the gift of sex, the need for self-discovery, and the value of pleasure. Growing up a church girl who followed the rules, had a checklist of husband qualities, and "kissed dating goodbye," the first few years of marriage with sexual desires proved difficult.  We choose to show up because we’ve committed to fight back the darkness of fear, shame, and division. 

This conversation addresses the mental capacity needed to accept ourselves as wives desired by our husbands. Becoming rule breakers is a choice to reimagine the rules we used to keep and develop an understanding of sexual desire that serves those who will follow in our footsteps as wives. It is the beginning of a conversation leading to liberation in sensuality, and enjoying sex in marriage for what it can be.
