25th Pauri of Japji (Bahota Karam)

Japji Sahib is a prayer written by Guru Nanak, the first of the Sikh gurus. Each pauri, or stanza, imparts a special healing quality, especially when recited eleven times per day. The 25th pauri is said to take away duality, expand the radiant body, and bring prosperity.

The Practice

Suggested Posture: Sit in Easy Pose, with a straight spine. The hands are resting on the knees in gyan mudra (first fingers and thumb tips are touching).

Eyes: Eyes may be open or closed.

ਬਹੁਤਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

Bahuthaa Karam Likhiaa Naa Jaae ||

His Blessings are so abundant that there can be no written account of them.

ਵਡਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥

Vaddaa Dhaathaa Thil N Thamaae ||

The Great Giver does not hold back anything.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਜੋਧ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

Kaethae Mangehi Jodhh Apaar ||

There are so many great, heroic warriors begging at the Door of the Infinite Lord.

ਕੇਤਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨਹੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Kaethiaa Ganath Nehee Veechaar ||

So many contemplate and dwell upon Him, that they cannot be counted.

ਕੇਤੇ ਖਪਿ ਤੁਟਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥

Kaethae Khap Thuttehi Vaekaar ||

So many waste away to death engaged in corruption.

ਕੇਤੇ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰੁ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

Kaethae Lai Lai Mukar Paahi ||

So many take and take again, and then deny receiving.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

Kaethae Moorakh Khaahee Khaahi ||

So many foolish consumers keep on consuming.

ਕੇਤਿਆ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਸਦ ਮਾਰ ॥

Kaethiaa Dhookh Bhookh Sadh Maar ||

So many endure distress, deprivation and constant abuse.

ਏਹਿ ਭਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥

Eaehi Bh Dhaath Thaeree Dhaathaar ||

Even these are Your Gifts, O Great Giver!

ਬੰਦਿ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਇ ॥

Bandh Khalaasee Bhaanai Hoe ||

Liberation from bondage comes only by Your Will.

ਹੋਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

No one else has any say in this ਜੇ ਕੋ ਖਾਇਕੁ ਆਖਣਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

jae ko khaaeik aakhan paae ||

if some fool should presume to say that he does,

ਓਹੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇਤੀਆ ਮੁਹਿ ਖਾਇ ॥

ouhu jaanai jaetheeaa muhi khaae ||

he shall learn, and feel the effects of his folly.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ॥

aapae jaanai aapae dhaee ||

he himself knows, he himself gives.

ਆਖਹਿ ਸਿ ਭਿ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥

aakhehi s bh kaeee kaee ||

few, very few are those who acknowledge this.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

jis no bakhasae sifath saalaah ||

one who is blessed to sing the praises of the lord,

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੫॥

naanak paathisaahee paathisaahu ||25||

o nanak, is the king of kings. ||25||

ਉਹ ਅਨੰਤ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਅਨੰਤ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਉਸ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ। This Mantra has capacity to give you infinite powers.

oochay upar oochaa naa-o

God is high.

The Nam (Sound Current) is high.

ayvad oochaa hovai ko-ay

tis oochay ka-o jaanai so-ay

You must get that high to see.

jayvad aap jaanai aap aap

naanak nadree karmee daat

You must get that high to see.

Produce Thou plenty of corn and water and ridding them of pain and penury, ferry them across the world-ocean.

Aradhaas Sunee Dhaathaar Hoee Sisatt Thar ||

The Beneficent Lord heard my prayer and the world has been comforted.

ਲੇਵਹੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਗਾਇ ਅਪਦਾ ਸਭ ਹਰੁ ॥

Laevahu Kanth Lagaae Apadhaa Sabh Har ||

My Lord, take Thou me into Thine embrace and banish all my misery.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਤੂ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਂਈ ॥

To Thee is thine slave's supplication, O Lord. Thou art my true Master.

ਤੂ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥

Ever, ever Thou art my Protector. I meditate on thee.

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

Men and other beings are all thine and Thou art pervading amongst them.

ਜੋ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਚਾਈ ॥

He, who slanders Thy attendant, him Thou crusheth and destroyest.

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਛਡਿ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਰਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਗਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨੧॥

By falling at Thine feet, Nanak has forsaken cares and has become care-free.

The Vedas and the four Semitic scriptures are unnecessary, O brother, if the mind's anxiety is not removed.

ਟੁਕੁ ਦਮੁ ਕਰਾਰੀ ਜਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਾਜਿਰ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੧॥

If thou fix thy mind on God even for a moment, then the Lord shall be seen just present before thee.

ਬੰਦੇ ਖੋਜੁ ਦਿਲ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ ਨਾ ਫਿਰੁ ਪਰੇਸਾਨੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

O man, search thy heart every day and wander not in perplexity.

ਇਹ ਜੁ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਿਹਰੁ ਮੇਲਾ ਦਸਤਗੀਰੀ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

This world is a magic show. In it there is not on is hold thy hand. Pause.

ਦਰੋਗੁ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਖੁਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੇਖਬਰ ਬਾਦੁ ਬਕਾਹਿ ॥

Reading and reading false-hood, the mortals are delighted and being ignorant talk nonsense.

ਹਕੁ ਸਚੁ ਖਾਲਕੁ ਖਲਕ ਮਿਆਨੇ ਸਿਆਮ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

My just True Creator is within His creation. He is not the Krishna of black form.

ਅਸਮਾਨ ਮਿਾਨੇ ਲਹੰਗ ਦਰੀਆ ਗੁਸਲ ਕਰਦਨ ਬੂਦ ॥

In the tenth gate flows the stream of celestial bliss Thou ought to have taken a bath in it.

ਕਰਿ ਫਕਰੁ ਦਾਇਮ ਲਾਇ ਚਸਮੇ ਜਹ ਤਹਾ ਮਉਜੂਦੁ ॥੩॥

Ever perform thou the Lord's service. wear these spectacles.

ਅਲਾਹ ਪਾਕੰ ਪਾਕ ਹੈ ਸਕ ਕਰਉ ਜੇ ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਇ ॥

The Lord is the purest of the pure. Thou mayest entrain a doubt if there be another.

ਕਬੀਰ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਰੀਮ ਕਾ ਉਹੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਾਨੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥

Kabir, mercy wells up from the Merciful Lord. He alone knows, who does all this.
