Today I want to discuss why your business should be entering local, state and national business awards.
And the reason I chose this topic about business awards was that one of my coaching clients recently won an award at the Australian Small Business Champions Awards for their dental surgery in Sydney.
I was also talking with a friend of mine, Scott Brown, who is one of the judges for a local business award in Cairns, and it got me thinking about my own experiences entering awards and also all the long-term benefits.
Not Just Big CompaniesI'd also like to point out that entering awards is not just for big companies. When my wife and I won the Telstra Small Business Award way back in 2003, we were up against some pretty big companies, and we didn't think our podiatry business stood a chance. Well, we were wrong.
And winning the award opened many unexpected doors.
But We're Already BusyI know a lot of companies are quite busy, so they may be thinking why do we need to be entering awards?
Well, there are a lot of reasons and here are my top eleven:
Here's the most important thing I want to stress; you don't have to win to be a winner. What you will learn about yourself, your business and your team you cannot put a price on. Regardless of the final result, you will end up with a better business by entering awards.

This is why we're bringing Biomechanics and Business together in one 2-Day Workshop.

Jerry Green is the Marketing Director at the Indiana Podiatry Group, which encompasses eleven podiatry businesses in Indiana, USA and treats more than 3000 patients per week.
If your business is dependant on a steady flow of new referrals, you need to consider adding a marketing director to your team, and this doesn't just apply to podiatry or the healthcare industry, every business that interacts with people face-to-face can benefit by having someone fulfil this role.
Before selling my own podiatry business in 2016, this was one of the most critical positions held, and it produced our most significant source of referrals.
After selling my business, the new owners did not see the role as necessary and did away with it, which I believe was a costly mistake.

For some people, SEO means Search Engine Optimism and not Seach Engine Optimisation because they are crossing their fingers and really hoping for the best, or hoping their SEO company knows what they're doing and is not taking them for a ride.
My guest, Nicky Jurd, from Precedence is an online expert and my goal for this particular episode is to strip away some of the BS we are being dealt with in the SEO world.
On this episode we discuss:
3:05 - What is SEO and what does an SEO company do?
6:20 - A good SEO company will first identify if you’re selling locally or globally and work out what kind of traffic is going to be most relevant
Initially, they need to make sure your website has no technical issues that are preventing Google from getting to every page. They will go through every page and optimise each page for a different set of keywords.
They will also check the speed of your website. If it is slow this will affect everything else you do. speed is a priority to Google.
10:25 - Tools you can use to test things.
Most SEO companies will hand these problems over to your website developer because they need access to the website. So if your SEO company has not asked for your website developer details or access details to your website from you...there's a reason to have a concern.
" You want to avoid getting a Google uppercut"
14:05 - Why most SEO companies will get heavily involved in the content of the website.
Google likes content that is frequent and fresh, and content with a lot of details about the services you provide.
If you like to write the other benefits of using an SEO company is helping you define your strategy and identifying gaps in your industry that other people are not writing about.
They will help you identify areas where can you pick up new businesses.
16:30 - Why you need to remove industry jargon because no one is searching for it.
17:00 - What you can expect for $500 per month
19:35 - You need to know what they are doing to bring in more Relevant Traffic.
You can tell the traffic increase is quality traffic by an increase in sales.
20:35 - How to find a good referral for a good SEO company who has got good results
22:05 - Should your SEO company be doing your Facebook Ads, Google Ads, designing your website, writing content, etc?
There are many benefits for looking for Social Media Specialists versus umbrella companies that try to do it all. More than likely they outsource it to third party companies.
WARNING: They also pass details about your website to third party companies who you do not know.
"UNICORNS: It's rare to find a company that does it all well and does it all in house".
26:25 - Outsourcing is okay until something goes wrong.
28:10 - Remember SEO is a long term strategy, not a short term fix. Allow 3-12 months before you see any results.
29:00 - If you’re a small company you may be better not to use an SEO company and instead engage someone to help train you on doing it yourself.

If you want to go from invisible to influential in your industry, you must start sharing your story and personal journey. Keeping it to yourself serves nobody, and often we forget the journey we have walked is unique and will relate to certain people, and by not sharing our message some people are going to remain stuck.
My guest, Annemarie Cross who is known as the 'podcasting queen', is a personal brand strategist and helps individuals get noticed in a noisy world by using podcasting as part of their marketing strategy.
On this episode we discuss:1:30 - What is Imposter Syndrome?
5:00 - What’s your unique story?
7:50 - Don't be afraid of Digital Dirt.
We've all made mistakes, so talk about it, don’t keep it silent. Take ownership of that conversation and use it to contribute to your learning and teaching.
9:50 - Steps to go from invisible to influential.
Step One: Insight:This information relates to who is your ideal client and the message that you share is going to speak to the issues that they have.
11:20 - A lot of business are scared to niche, but when you start to speak into one particular area you’ll find your reputation will proceed itself. A generalist often has their voice, and message spread too far, and therefore they’re not seen as that expert person in any particular area.
20:10 - Story Telling
23:10 - The benefits of consistently sharing a message.
25:00 - Make sure your terminology relates to the listener.
Step Two: Intrigue:You need to speak the language of your ideal audience member, and you want to build something that has real value and maintains their attention. You want all your content to have a call to action, and you'll know if it's having an impact because people will engage with you.
Step Three: Integrate:It is not practical to be active on every social media platform, which is why you need to know which ones are already working well for you.
Can you integrate a podcast to nurture those relationships even further? Podcasting is a great platform to let existing customers know about all the other services you offer.
A Podcast SeriesStarting a podcast series can help answer the questions your clients may be having and also how to overcome them. You can invite guests who are experts in particular areas and best of all the content is available 24/7.
When you have a podcast, you can leverage off your other platforms, letting your audiences know you have a podcast. Make sure everything you're doing is connected and shares your podcast message.
34:40 - Talk from your area of strength. If you don’t like using video, then don’t use it.
The Buyers Journey36:40 - Not every audio recording you do has got to be a podcast series; it can be used in a private group or on webpages.
Monday Morning TipDon’t eliminate yourself by thinking your story is not worth sharing.

There are so many online marketing options available when it comes to connecting and staying in contact with your new and existing clients, customers and patients, and my guest Gavin Baker from Baker Labs, out of Knoxville Tennessee believes you've got to go with your strengths and keep your marketing strategy simple.
Gavin Baker has worked with a lot of different businesses, but after evaluating his client base, he could see a strong trend towards healthcare, which is where he decided to stay.
Doubling Down
When you notice an area of your business that is growing faster than the rest and is making good money you need to focus your energy and consider doubling or even tripling down. This is how Baker Labs moved into working with Healthcare clients.
Biggest Social Media Changes Over Past Seven Years
The Big Four: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & LinkedIn
In all honesty, you can only do two platforms well. You can try to do more, but it's not recommended. You should have a primary and secondary platform.
Facebook is always going to be the number one primary platform. Therefore your secondary platform should be picked based on your personality.
Instagram Versus Twitter
If you like taking photos and your business is very visual then Instagram is going to be a perfect platform, however, if you are struggling what you should take a picture of, then it may not be the best platform.
If you're witty and be willing to engage consistently throughout the day, Twitter is a great platform.
LinkedIn is rarely used as a secondary social media platform because it involves developing a strategy first.
Tips For Instagram
But remember, if your business only services within a 30-kilometre radius from your primary location, does having engagement with another company a thousand miles away be of benefit?
Which Are You More Likely To Do?
You need to operate where you do your best work. Assuming Instagram and Twitter are equal:
Most people fail at marketing because they get stuck trying to do things they're no good at and they only do it because everyone else is doing it.
If you have to take a picture, but don't know what to take a picture of this wastes time and results in poor image selection, which reflects on your business.
The Power of Email Newsletters
With email newsletters, you can connect with a lot of people quickly, and can be turned into sales and money, especially on e-commerce websites.
People love to hate email and they will constantly complain about how much they receive, but it doesn't mean they will unsubscribe, so you have to keep sending it because you never know when your message will be heard.
Before You Start An Email Newsletter
If you want your email newsletters to stand out, you've got to have a Good Subject Line. You want clients to see the email and think, I want to open this right now.
Link Back To Your Website
If you're going to go to the effort of writing an email newsletter and be on social media, you want to get clients going back to your website, not someone else's.
So if you read an interesting article or report, don't post it on social media or put it in your email newsletter and link it to their website, instead, write your blog quoting what you have read and the source, and link it to your site. Brilliant Idea.
Email Newsletter Automation
Newsletters can be sent monthly unless you have a lot to say then weekly is a good idea.
Another email newsletter option is to set up an automation process. It can be set up as a workflow or drip email after someone has requested a free report or download from your website.
Or, you can use an automated email to push out a weekly review of updated content from your website. I do this with my podcasts and blog post using Campaign Monitor, but Mail Chimp and other platforms have similar features.
There's Something More Important Than The Open Rates
The key is to get your information out because you do not know who is going to read it and when.
It doesn't matter if a client opens the email or not, just by them seeing your business name in the subject line every month means it is not a waste of time.
If they take no action and don't unsubscribe, it means they're not sick of seeing it, so keep on sending it and do not delete them from your email list. It's a cheap way of staying in touch.
Purple Cow
If everyone is doing digital for all their communication, then maybe snail mail is a marketing option and will make you'd stand out. This is what Seth Godin was talking about in his book Purple Cow.
Yes, postage is far more expensive but when was the last time you got a hardcopy newsletter or handwritten card. We don't get as much mail now, so people do look at it.
It's essential to test the waters and keep trying new things. Never rule out an idea.
Monday Morning Tip
Look in your inbox and find three emails newsletter you like to read and work out why you want to read them. Then produce a newsletter that is like the ones you enjoy and you think your clients will also enjoy.
"I want a newsletter like this because it makes me feel like that".

Have you ever considered working in a foreign country? And when I say foreign, I mean a country that does not speak English and must have an interpreter to communicate. If you have, but you're still undecided, this podcast episode with Dr Justin Trosclair should spark some interest.
Dr Trosclair is originally from South Louisianna, USA and is currently working and living in China, and there were a lot of destinations in between.
Why China
At 29 years of age, he sold his business and decided he wanted to have an adventure, something he missed out on when he chose to study Chiropractic, but instead of just spending his money on holiday he decided to work at the same time.
He selected China because it had fewer hoops to jump through to be able to work compared to other countries, however it still took six months to get all the required paperwork sorted out.
Benefits of Working In A Non-English Country (China)
They also provide you with an interpreter, so this solves the communication problem.
Biggest Lessons Living in A Foreign Country
You should not try and change everyone to your way of thinking, stead; you need to embrace the culture, enjoy the festivals, eat their food and remind yourself why you are there.
Just step back and observe, and do not be a jerk, otherwise, you will not get invited anywhere.
You also need someone you can trust to take care of your affairs at home.
Yearly Evaluation
Dr Trosclair's employment contract is renewed every 12-months, but before he agrees he talks with his wife and evaluates the past year, and together they decide if they want to stay longer.
They ask two simple questions:
A Doctors Perspective Podcast
Dr Trosclair had a lot of spare time on his hands and was enjoying listening to podcasts so he thought starting his podcast would be a great way to connect and learn from other people, not just in Chiropractic. (Podcast: A Doctor's Perspective)
There are many benefits by starting a podcast, and one of them is always getting guests on his show that he has an interest in their subject as well.
How to Maintain High Levels of Energy
You need to work out how much sleep you need and then make sure you get it.
Monday Morning Tip
Use a To-Do-List. Start a simple to-do-list for the day, or do one for the week. Work out the top 5 things that you want to get done and then mark the top three. Get those done first.

If you want to amplify your business online, you need to align your social media content with your business needs. Your content needs to be authentic to you and make sense to your audience because a confused mind will always say no. Your content has also got to be appropriate to the social media platform your using.
My guest Matt Hanham is the director of a Perth based digital marketing agency Visible. He is also the host of #Amplify Your Business podcast.
On this episode we discuss:
2:20 - The Online Process - developing and finding a way to make content that makes sense to your business. It needs to add value or entertain.
4:20 - You must have the right context for the platform you're on.
For example, Instagram: When they're in browse mode looking at pictures, they're not usually in the mood for buying, unless the picture captures their attention. It must be engaging.
6:40 - The importance of sharing your interest and passions on social media
You can't post photos of your hunting weekend if you own and operate a business that works closely with Vegans, it would not make sense.
12:30 - You can't just do what everyone else is doing in your industry. You've got to show your differences. It's not all about the craft you do.
20:20 - Create content that will make people talk, but be authentic. Great content will amplify who you are and will create publicity.
Creating interesting content will make people pay attention, and then when you do open your mouth and talk about the craft you do, people will listen.
24:45 - If you're not sure what content to create, start writing a list and start brainstorming until you get excited about something.
28:10 - Simple Minds Podcast
29:00 - Amplify Your Business podcast
30:05 - What are Custom Audiences on Facebook and how to use them to grow your business.

Leticia Moran has been a Graphic Designer for twenty-three years specialising in corporate print related logos, branding and everything that follows on from that. Leticia is my Graphic Designer and is responsible for all my logos, branding and artwork. On this episode, we discuss the benefits of having a real-life graphic designer as part of your advisory team and why they are just as important as your legal and financial advisors.
If you're serious about growing your small business, look at what big businesses are doing. Yes, they use online graphics services, but when it comes to long-term business strategy and direction they have a graphic designer on deck, and you should be thinking the same way.
On this episode we discuss:2:20 - What is a Graphic Designer
3:10 - What's the difference between using for a graphic designer and Canva, or other programs yourself at home? The simple answer has a lot to do with saving time, which in turn saves you money.
"You build a relationship with your graphic designer and together you go on a journey."
5:10 - Has Fiverr affected the graphic design industry?
6:30 - Why using a graphic designer is an investment in your brand. They help keep everything in check, something you do not get using an online service.
7:50 - A Graphic Designer will help bring consistency between your brands and sub-brands.
9:35 - What is a logo suite? (Fonts, colours, various formats, etc.). A good LOGO should be able to be viewed at the size of a button
10:20 - Style Guides keep the brand consistent regardless of where it is being used. (Business cards to billboards)
13:40 - Why meeting with a client one-on-one is so essential and the benefits you won't get using Fiverr. (Email, phone, Zoom, face-to-face)
14:21 - Taglines
15:25 - Avoiding copywriter infringements. Leticia helps to get inside your head to create originality.
20:00 - What it was like working with the Matilda Brewing Company and creating the Beez Neez logo.
"Big companies use Graphic Designers and not Fiverr because they respect their brand integrity".
25:20 - When people engage a graphic designer it all starts with a Briefing Sheet.
27:30 - The Concept Stage: During this stage, the graphic designer will give the client feedback about colours, icons, etc
29:30 - Different industries have certain colours and images (i.e., Dentistry - tooth Image). However, a graphic designer can assist you in thinking outside the box.
For example, Sunbird Orthodontics in Cairns purchased a business under a different name, which was outdated, so they decided to rebrand the name and everything else that went with it. A Sunbird was relevant to them and so they used it in all the rebranding and it really stands out. Plus it invokes a happy feeling.
34:30 - Why I was a good client. I was good at explaining what I liked and didn't like. There was a lot of clarity, plus we have developed a relationship over time, and now Leticia understands my business objectives.
35:50 - A graphic designer is a GUARDIAN of people's brands.
38:10 - Logo and Brand Audits
There is an initial outlay financially for a graphic designer, but it's not as expensive as you may think and it's an investment in your business. A good logo has integrity and longevity.
Monday Morning TipGo online and do your research. Look at competitors do, locally and worldwide. Look at colours, styles, fonts and develop a bucket of ideas before you have a meeting with the Graphic Designer
