I'm joined with my parents to talk about the importance of amplifying Native American voices, and we educate ourselves about how Native American Heritage Day came to be. As a white family, we talk about how "Killers of the Flower Moon" is essential viewing to learn about the Osage community and their culture/values, and how they were manipulated and abused by white settlers.

After recording, my mom kept repeating, "can we have a do-over because I'm worried that there's going to be a strong backlash." I assured her that speaking truth to power when it comes to the Native American genocide that we see play out in "Killers of the Flower Moon" is not a fantasy but a reality. At the end of the episode my father emphatically states "What's wrong with history and facts" if it makes you uncomfortable "Deal With It"!

Hopefully, listening to us discuss this encourages more families to have these conversations.

I'm re-releasing this timely and important conversation about the Thanksgiving mythology that so many of us have been taught in school, which ignores the horrors of white settler colonialism that has exerted such violence and exploitation of the Native American communities. Instead, as Dr. Andrea Sullivan-Clarke reminds us, it is time for Americans to educate themselves about Native American history and indigenous philosophies, which have been whitewashed from so many American textbooks.

Today, we are joined by Professor Karen Galli, who teaches in the English program at Hudson County Community College. Right away, we explore the differences between teaching at a community college, a state university, and a private university. She notes that community college students often have a deeper desire to change their family's trajectory through education, whereas private university students can sometimes be more focused on negotiating requirements rather than a genuine thirst for learning.

Karen explains how she works to help community college students, many of whom are first-generation, develop critical thinking and writing skills. She describes strategies like relating assignments to students' interests and professional goals and building trust to encourage them to take risks in their thinking and writing.

The group discusses the perception that the humanities lack rigor compared to STEM fields, and how Karen navigates this bias with her STEM-focused colleagues. She emphasizes the need to demonstrate the structure and academic integrity within humanities disciplines.

Karen shares how she has approached the use of AI tools by students in her writing courses. She focuses on building trust, scaffolding the writing process, and making the value of original thinking and writing transparent, rather than just penalizing AI-generated work.

Today on ITBR, I’m joined by Jon Kinnally, a prolific American TV writer and producer with an extensive background in the world of entertainment! His newest memoir, I’m Prancing as Fast as I Can, is a coming-of-age story about a scared boy, confused about his sexuality, who learns to accept himself, his queerness, and accomplish incredible artistic goals (including writing for the hit show Will & Grace)! It’s also a sort of love letter for those who share the experience of frustration, turbulence, and eventually figure out how to blossom into their queerness. His book makes you both laugh and cry at the same time. Jon also talks about his experiences working on the hit shows Will and Grace and Ugly Betty (to name a few), and what it was like taking Betty Buckley's meditative acting class (oh he also saw the original Carrie Broadway musical so you know I had to ask him about that).
