Born in Illinois in 1941 to religious parents, Richard’s lifetook a turn early on leading to alcohol addiction and violence towards women. He would become one of the early mass murderers in American history when he murdered eight nursing students.

Join us "somewhere over the rainbow" for a very special all things The Wonderful Wizard of Oz universe themed episode. I'm joined with the co-editors of Broadview Press' new edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Professors Dina Schiff Massachi and Mark I. West. This episode couldn't come out (okay I couldn't help myself there) at a better time since asking someone if they were a "friend of Dorothy" was slang in the 20th century for being part of the LGBT community.

First, Dina and Mark provide scholarly insight into L. Frank Baum's Oz books and how he created an original American fairy tale. We talk all about the numerous adaptations that Baum's books have inspired including the iconic MGM film, Return to Oz, and Gregory's Maguire's Wicked. As Dina reminds us, Baum's work was progressive for its time especially the strong female characters who challenge gender norms, and in Dina's opinion, Baum's Dorothy might be more feminist than Judy Garland's Dorothy!

Dina and Mark explain that this new Broadview edition not only provides historical context for deeper analysis but also the original illustrations.

I just came back from my first time ever in Miami with my fiancé, and I thought why not re-air my thrilling conversation with Miami based writer Rochelle Weinstein. This aired about two years ago, and I definitely am going to have Rochelle back on to discuss her new novel We Are Made of Stars!

We have an exciting conversation about what type of literature Rochelle writes which I coin "Romantic Realism." Rochelle provides so much literary insight in this episode, and she first explains why after giving birth to twin boys she knew she needed to become a writer! Then, I ask her why Miami holds such a special place in her literature and upbringing. For Rochelle, Miami is not just a literary setting, it's an atmosphere for her reader.

So, the ITBR finally made it to see SMASH the Hit? Broadway Musical, and we do not hold back with our reviews so buckle up for an energetic and lively conversation that asks did the musical match the energy of the TV show?

Spoilers Ahead So Skip and Just Listen to the Episode If You Don't Want to Know Our True Feelings:

The positive aspects first...

Robyn Hurder is incredibly talented and her charisma, vocal power, and dance moves light up the stage!

If you have never seen the TV show before, you are definitely going to not have as much to critique than if you were a major fan of the show (like the three of us).

If you like plays that have a lot of music in them, then this musical is for you! We get into what we mean by this even though the Tony Awards have categorized this as a musical.

Now our critiques...

The Bombshell musical numbers are not properly highlighted and there are so many missed opportunities to explore the different dimensions of Marilyn's life. As Andrew says, this could have been a musical about any iconic celebrity's life, like Judy Garland, and it would have had the same effect.

The creative team is more concerned about showing the behind the scenes of creating a Broadway musical, more so than what the material is about.

Now if anyone from the creative or cast happen to encounter this review, first we absolutely love the talent that is on stage, and we are major fans of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman's work (I mean Hairspray is iconic), we just didn't happen to thoroughly enjoy this adaptation of the TV show. We found both pros and cons in this adaptation, and we encourage everyone listening to go and see this musical. Judge it for yourself. That's what the arts are about!

He explains that his interest in psychology, filmmaking, and literature helps inform his approach to queer narratives so of course I ask him who his favorite queer authors and filmmakers are. He explains why he praised Guadagnino's Queer in his Gay and Lesbian Review article, and how the film nicely portrays the themes of loneliness and unrequited love. As a William S. Burroughs expert (the author of the Queer novel), Brian compares/contrasts the novel and the film adaptation.

Then, Brian discusses his new novel Julian's Debut and explains how its premise is inspired by real-life interactions. He then explains the ethical implications of memoir writing and autofiction which is a genre that blurs the lines between reality and fabrication. Brian then gets into the legacy of author Edmund White, whose memoir he adapted into a graphic novel. This episode highlights the complexities of being a gay writer in the publishing industry.
