Hey, true crime friends. This week we are starting a two-part series on the murder of 14-year-old Shoreline School student, Reena Virk. On November 14, 1997, Reena met up with her fellow students at the field behind the school. Towards the end of the night, a group of girls lured her under Craigflower Bridge and brutally attacked her. She managed to get to her feet and make her way home, but she would never make it.

On Feb. 27, 2023, The New Yorker published an article ominously titled "The End of the English Major." This article caused quite a conversation across higher education, and there are many question marks concerning how to study not only English but all Humanities subjects in a moment where liberal arts funding is facing massive cuts, departments are being consolidated, and technology is rapidly changing. One of the major questions concerns a technological specter looming ever larger, Artificial Intelligence.

Dr. Sid Dobrin, an expert on Digital Humanities from the University of Florida, is here to ease our anxieties and tensions regarding the fear of AI taking over the Humanities classroom. Instead of fearing ChatGPT, Sid explores new questions we should be asking that incorporates this technology, rather than trying to get rid of it. He explains that AI, Virtual Reality, and digital media can all be used as tools for thinking about the Humanities. As he reminds us at the beginning of this episode, English departments study what and how people read/write and that means responding to newly emerging technology like AI.

You can find Sid's book "AI and Writing" (published by Broadview Press) here: https://broadviewpress.com/product/ai-and-writing/#tab-description

After a brief intermission, we're back with all new episodes of SMASH and so much has been happening in the SMASH universe. Recently, @smashbway has shared clips teasing the Broadway musical and we have thoughts! Before jumping back into today's SMASH episode, Andrew and Christian look into why so many new Broadway musicals have closed and how Broadway can provide more affordable ways for people who feel priced out.

Episode six provides so much food for thought. First, why does Karen always seem so green and unprepared? It's almost as if she forgets that she's rehearsing for a Broadway musical. Then, Ivy reveals her own bombshell when she tells the entire cast and creative team that she's been sleeping with Derek. And yes, Derek's misogyny escalates as he continues to psychologically manipulate both Ivy and Karen.

Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the "Chemistry" episode:

Does "Fellow Travelers" realistically portray the social and political climate queer men faced during the Lavender Scare, especially if these men worked for the government? This is one of many questions that Allen and Andrew get into as well as exploring which other queer texts focused on being gay in Washington D.C.? They discuss divides between attitudes around privacy versus visibility, with Allen providing the perspective of older generations who found comfort in the closet versus demands to come out. And in preparation for an upcoming "Queer as Folk" episode with author Neil J. Young, who just wrote "Coming Out Republican," they explore how gay Republicanism functions in "Fellow Travelers" (think Roy Cohn).

This couldn't be a more timely and urgent conversation with author and investigative journalist Katherine Corcoran. As a former AP Mexico bureau chief, her new book "In the Mouth of the Wolf" investigates the m*rder of Regina Martínez, a legendary woman journalist who exposed government corruption in Mexico. With her acclaimed investigative journalist voice, Katherine looks into why so many journalists were m*rdered in Mexico...why would the Mexican government want to censor and silence these journalists?

Katherine emphasizes that when she started her journalism career freedom of the press was a given, but times have changed since the media and journalists are now considered suspect by both politicians and the American public. She explains that it's important to analyze what media you're consuming and whether or not it has a bias. Then, she distinguishes between pundits and journalists, there is a major difference.

This conversation about the future of the free press is a breath of fresh air since Katherine answers all of Andrew's questions. A few questions include how corporate interests have influenced the journalism field, are the American people really that divided, and what the future of the free press looks like both in America and abroad?

Do you think that you're able to engage in healthy political conversations right now, especially if you have family, friends, and perhaps even a partner who disagrees with your politics? That's the question that I dissect with today's guest, William Ferraro. Will is not only a good friend of mine but has a background in public policy, was a New York State senate and assembly analyst, and in 2019 ran for Brookhaven Town Supervisor (Suffolk County, New York). He is definitely not afraid to air his political beliefs, and it's extremely refreshing to have such a spirited and unfiltered conversation about how we can try to find political common ground in such a divisive time for American politics.
