  • BONUS - In Conversation With... JOSIE COTTON!

The legendary JOSIE COTTON chats with me for a over an hour! Recorded Saturday, June 12th, 2021, Josie and I scratch the surface of her career from "Johnny Are You Queer?" to her love of Japanese garage rock bands appearing in 60s movies, to how she got her master tapes back from Elektra! Of course we share a mutual love of all things John Waters. There's no one better than Josie Cotton and I was delighted she wanted to chat!

This is our full unedited conversation! Highlights will be featured on I DID THIS FIRST! this week, but this is over an hour of Jake and Josie!

You can also watch the interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/4rM3CiZj_Ro

  • BONUS - The Dennis Pornography Conversation (Early 70's Airdate Unknown)

Here’s an archived episode of “The Dennis Pornography Conversation” from the early 70’s. I don’t have an exact date because many of these shows were not archived. This was Dennis Pornography’s “Community Affairs” program that aired at 6:00am on Sundays.

This episode did not go very well for Dennis.

    Some music was played:

Jethro Tull - “Thick As A Brick” (Radio Edit)

    T.Rex - “Shock Rock”

    Frank Zappa - “Jewish Princess”

I hope you enjoy this piece of radio history and the legendary on-air personality, Dennis Pornography.

  • BONUS - THE MORNING DJ AFTER "THE WARRIORS"

This is a really special piece of history. A rare aircheck of DAN PRETENDER, the morning disc-jockey who followed the overnight DJ as depicted in the motion picture, “The Warriors.”

He brings up an ethical question: should a radio station be using its airwaves to send messages to rival street gangs? Enjoy this historical broadcast featuring, news, weather, commercials and calls. Songs Dan played during the aircheck we got acmes to include:

Joe Walsh - “In The City”

Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman - “Stumblin’ In”

Robert Palmer - “Bad Case Of Loving You”

    Billy Joel - “My Life”

Bad Company - “Rock and Roll Fantasy”

    Hot Chocolate - “Every 1's a Winner"

If anyone has any more tape from this broadcast I’d love to hear it. I’d also love to hear any other DAN PRETENDER radio shows.

    Enjoy,

    Jake Fogelnest

  • BONUS: SKIP "THE AMERICAN" DAVIS - Radio Caroline (2nd, March 1968)

Hello KFOG listeners! I have a special treat for you.

This is an interesting piece of radio history. I'm sure many of you are familiar with Radio Caroline, the British PIRATE RADIO station that operated starting in 1964. They were a direct answer to the stuff BBC radio programming, playing rock music and generally giving the youth culture of the UK what they WANTED to hear.

What you're going to hear is about 45 minutes of SKIP "THE AMERICAN" DAVIS who was a Radio Caroline disc jockey for exactly 45 minutes. When you listen to the aircheck I think it will become clear why.

Apparently Skip worked as "WMCA Good Guy" in New York City for two weeks, but it didn't go well. The reasons for why he lost his job are murky. It's very possible he was fired because he was caught in a raid in a gay bar (keep in mind this was 1967/1968), or he just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way, it's a sad story and radio was on the wrong side of history, as it so often is.

Or it could be that Skip was just a TERRIBLE DISC JOCKEY.

I have searched extensively online and there is not much known about his life after this broadcast. There is one particularly disturbing moment in the broadcast that leads me to believe that he does NOT want to be found.

Hey, but as lousy and weird Skip "The American" Davis was as a DJ his playlist was FANTASTIC! Check it out:

John Fred and his Playboy Band - “Judy In Disguise (with glasses)”

The Supremes - “Hang On Sloopy”

The Who - “I Can See For Miles”

The Beatles - “Sie iebt dicht”

Andrew Loog Oldham - “The Last Time”

The Four Tops - “Walk Away Renee”

Brenton Wood - “Gimme Little Sign”

Esther And Abi Ofarim - “Cinderella Rockefella”

The American Breed - “Bend Me, Shape Me”

    The Move - “Fire Brigade”

Status Quo - “Pictures Of Matchstick Men”

Skip then breaks from the formatted playlist and shares a demo recording of a "promising new singer/songwriter from Los Angeles." I think that you should just hear it because it might explain some things. Or raise more questions?

Wherever you are Skip "The American” Davis (aka Ted Weintraub), you are a part of radio history. I am proud to present this aircheck of you and hope that you are okay and not dead,

    He's probably dead.
