On Canada Day Jessi Harewicz joined us from her home beach and talked to us about thinking marathon swimmers are crazy, shedding the wetsuit, allowing yourself to fall in love with the water again and the freedom of swimming from home your home beach.
In her own words: Born and raised in Vancouver British Columbia I got into marathon swimming after many years of travelling. In 2015 I came home, where I was diagnosed with a hip impingement.
As a kid synchronized swimming was my aquatic choice . As I didn’t see the point in swimming back & forth in a pool !
I became the third Canadian to achieve the Triple Crown in 2019, with my dad navigating me around Manhattan by kayak.
Locally in the Salish Sea, I swim all around Vancouver. My toughest longest challenges at home.
Last August I swam my first pioneering route from Nanaimo harbour to kitsilano beach, my home beach. This took 30 hours and 13 minutes. I was the 11th Canadian on record to go over a 24 hour period of continuous swimming.
I swim with my dad (support kayaking) in local Vancouver and Suburbs.
