Light and Darkness: The Lamp of Inner Perception

Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6:22-23 speaks to the importance of inner vision:

"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is not single, your whole body will be full of darkness."

Here, eye (ὀφθαλμός - ophthalmos) doesn’t merely mean the physical eye but represents the “inner eye” or “third eye,” a common concept in mystical traditions as the seat of spiritual insight. Jesus speaks of light not as physical brightness but as divine illumination, an awakened inner vision that brings clarity.

In occult practice, an “awakened eye” enables us to perceive divine truths, while a “darkened eye” suggests blindness to spiritual realities. Jesus’ teaching echoes this belief, inviting us to seek an illuminated state of consciousness.
