Heaven in the New Testament: From Jesus's Teachings to Prophetic Visions
The concept of "heaven" in the Bible is rich and multifaceted.
Let’s dive in!
* Matthew 4:17: "From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”"
* (Also, John the Baptist in) Matthew 3:2: "and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”"
* The Lord's Prayer: Praying for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.
* Matthew 6:9-10: "“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’"
* Storing Treasures in Heaven
* Matthew 6:19-21: "“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
* Many Rooms in My Father's House
* John 14:1-3: "“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
* Names Written in Heaven
* Luke 10:20: "However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”"
* The Resurrection and Marriage in Heaven: A glimpse into the eternal state.
* Matthew 22:29-30: "Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven."

II. Teachings on Heaven from Other New Testament Authors
Following Jesus's ascension, the apostles and other inspired writers expanded on these themes.
A. Paul's Epistles:
* Our Citizenship is in Heaven: Our true home and allegiance.
* Philippians 3:20: "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,"
* Awaiting the Lord from Heaven: The eagerly anticipated return of Christ.
* 1 Thessalonians 1:10: "and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath."
* Caught Up to Meet the Lord: The resurrection and gathering of believers.
* 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: "For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever."
* An Inheritance Kept in Heaven: Secure, eternal riches.
* Colossians 1:5: "the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel"
* Our Heavenly Dwelling: Contrasting our earthly tent with our eternal home.
* 2 Corinthians 5:1-2: "For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,"
B. Peter's Epistles:
* An Inheritance Kept in Heaven: A secure, incorruptible inheritance.
* 1 Peter 1:3-4: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,"
C. Hebrews:
* A Better, Heavenly Country: Longing for a heavenly city.
* Hebrews 11:13-16: "All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them."
* Jesus, Our High Priest in Heaven: Christ's work in the heavenly sanctuary.
* Hebrews 8:1-2: "Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being."
* Hebrews 9:24: "For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence."
III. Revelation: Prophetic Visions of Heaven
The book of Revelation provides the most vivid and detailed descriptions of heaven, culminating in the "New Heaven and New Earth."

* Revelation 4:1-11: (Describes the throne, elders, creatures, and worship)

* A Great Multitude in Heaven: Worship from every nation.

* New Heaven and New Earth: The ultimate fulfillment of God's redemptive plan.
* Revelation 21:1-4: "Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”"
* The New Jerusalem: A detailed description of the heavenly city.
* Revelation 21:9-27
* Revelation 22:1-5: (Describing the river of life, tree of life, and no more curse)
