We last spoke to you after a shockingly brutal elimination at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights. The Kings appear to be done licking their wounds and have moved on to... doing the same things they did last offseason, or the offseason before. Signing old guys, missing out on the big free agent of the summer, and talking about how they're adapting to a new NHL.
But who's to say that the Kings' efforts will end like 2017 or 2018, and not like 2012 or 2014? After all, the Caps looked like they were writing the same old story before submitting a different final chapter a couple weeks ago. And LA's already flipped the script in June by locking down Ilya Kovalchuk, providing an epilogue eight years in the making.

As a neutral fan, you couldn't have asked for more than a first-round matchup between the Los Angeles Kings and the Vegas Golden Knights. On one side, you have the old guard. The Kings are one of the decade's most decorated teams, with two Stanley Cups and a reputation for being the team no one wants to face in the playoffs, fighting for a return to glory after just one playoff win in the last three seasons. On the other side, you have the new kid on the block. The Golden Knights are making their first playoff appearance, with a Pacific Division title in their inaugural year and a season-long reputation for being the team no one wants to play against at all, fighting to make an already-special campaign into a legendary one. On top of it all? A budding rivalry, bolstered by the knowledge that if you're a fan of the losing team, fans of the winning team are going to be soooo obnoxious after this series.
So forgive fans of both teams if we're nervous. Even though both teams exceeded expectations this season, we're getting greedy. That includes our guest! With ten days to go in the 2017-18 regular season, you're stressing and we're stressing. Sure, the Los Angeles Kings have at least a 75% chance of making the playoffs according to projections from several hockey websites. The problem? Three other teams also basically have a 75% chance too, and one of these four teams isn't getting in. At risk of jinxing this whole danged season, we'll try to figure out whether LA can beat out the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, or Anaheim Ducks (or all three, why not?) to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
As we do that, we'll talk about the big stories over the last few weeks of LA's season. Anze Kopitar's MVP hype is building thanks to a four-goal showing against the Avs and consistently great showings down the stretch. Jake Muzzin's upper body hurts, which means the Kings' blueline will too. Jeff Carter and Dustin Brown are producing, but Adrian Kempe and Alex Iafallo aren't. And do you trust Jack Campbell to make one more start? Eric, Robyn, Sarah, and James will talk it out tonight.
