In the book of Daniel chapter 3 we read that King Nebuchadnezzar had a 90 foot tall statue make of himself. He sent a herald out proclaiming the command to "all the people, nations and languages" that they fall down and worship the golden image. This command also came with a certain swift death penalty if not obeyed.
There were three young men out of that entire Babylonian kingdom that refused to bow down to that image. They were brought before that dreadful, temperamental, pride-filled king who demanded they fall down and worship the golden image. King Nebuchadnezzar, knew who they were, and what kind of stalwart persons they were, that they would not bow down before it and worship. So King Nebuchadnezzar offered them a way out, but they steadfastly refused to bow. Seven times in this chapter we see the words, "fall down, fell down, fallen down."
There are seven times we see the words spoken by that king referring to his golden image..."that I have set up." We see a war. The seventh "fell down" was in the oven that was heated seven times hotter. It slew King Nebuchadnezzar's mightiest men of his army. But the three young men Shadrach, Meshech and Abednego were cast in and "fell down bound." Immediately the king saw a fourth one, "Like that of the Son of God." I believe they fell down at His presence because the pre-incarnate Christ was already in there, in that seven-times-hotter fire. I do not believe they fell down from being cast in. The whole chapter is about worship.
They fell down bound at the feet of Jesus by their own accord. The Son of God loosed them, and walked around with them in the fire. They were delivered because they trusted in him, changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. These are the six things that must be steadfast in you and me.
There will always be an evil idolatrous golden image set up in our lives in one way or another, along with threatening demand that we fall down in forced obeisance before it. We are always going to find our faith so to speak being tried by fire. Never bow, never fall down to anything of this world. Never surrender to the enemy. Always reserve and keep your holy integrity, and fall down before Jesus Christ our Great God and King only.
"Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen."

It is evident that from time to time, there are going to be attacks upon our lives from the enemy. His weapons are many, and methods innumerable. If you are truly serving the Lord and living your life in Him, then sooner or later you will have to get into the ring with him. It is just that way. Last week our family came under an attack that was clearly from the enemy. And after a week of being tossed up and down, I felt tired, and worn out.
And one night I had a dream. I saw myself standing in a barren, desert waste land. I stood at the edge of a very high cliff. I looked and saw a land afar off that could not possibly exist on this earth. It was beyond any imaginable human expression to describe the infinite glory and beauty of it. I was overcome with the lush and richness of the land. There were great and high mountains with mighty waterfalls flowing down from the tops of them. There were other hills and waterfalls, and rivers. I began to sob from the deepest place from within myself. I was completely overcome by the beauty of it. I could barely take the power of the beauty. My human self could not take it.
I believe the Lord showed me this on purpose to get me to see beyond the carnal problems of this world. To see what lies ahead and where we are all going. I realized after several days of thinking about it, that Jesus wants us to see that what all of us are going through, will not be there. That He will rescue you and me, "delivering us from the will of the enemy."
He showed me the glorious land. Like the land of Havilah, where "the gold of that land is good." The gold of the land I saw is the glory of the Great King that shines in it. That good gold is the "gold tried in the fire that maketh rich," in this patch of earth we live in. So where we are, where we live, we have that gold that makes our barren land good because of it. When we come to the golden City we will find something familiar, only glorified. It will not be a strange place to us. The gold of that former land was good, but the gold of heaven land will be far more glorious and eternal.
"I bear my testimony that there is no joy to be found in all this world like that of sweet communion with Christ. I would barter all else there is of heaven for that. Indeed, that is heaven. As for the harps of gold and the streets like clear glass and the songs of seraphs and the shouts of the redeemed, one could very well give all these up, counting them as a drop in a bucket, if we might forever live in fellowship and communion with Jesus." ~Charles Spurgeon

There are times that the Lord will call you in a way you are not used to. In fact, it is striking. It takes a hold of your whole heart. Your spirit knows it is the Lord, but it is not like before. It is weighty. Then you go to and fro to try and explain it to people, and they do not understand what you are saying. Your family and friends think you have gone overboard.
Another thing happens. Everything you have done before to seek Him is empty. This adds to a deeper human kind of frustration. Many who have experienced this find themselves weeping and fasting, even isolating themselves in search for the Lord to disclose to them what is happening. But they will find that it only emphasizes that profound starkness. There is only silence and the weightiness only grows weightier. There is a bearing down upon their hearts even more than before.
Many find themselves ready to give up. They get tired of 'trying' to seek the Lord, they become exhausted in the searchful methods and walk away. They are too quick in "casting away the confidence in the Lord." They "cast away the cords" from themselves. The One who is calling you is the very One who intends to answer. There are things you cannot see right now, things that are not ready to be shown to you, and entrusted to you yet. He is preparing you, and that weightiness is only the sound of the Master's footsteps drawing ever nearer to you. He cannot be rushed. You will only destroy yourself in forcing it. Be at peace, and let God work. He is preparing something for you to do. This is the work of spiritual maturity as well.
"Never was a faithful prayer lost. Some prayers have a longer voyage than others, but then they return with their richer lading at last, so that the praying soul is a gainer by waiting for an answer." ~William Gurnall

Have you ever felt that there was a deep place in your heart that you were not aware of? Something so far greater in depths than you have experienced before, and from there a potent yearning? It is a place you do not typically abide in. In a sense it is like a place so deep within yourself, you would not know how to get there if you tried. Then one day, you feel that deep place stirring with increase day by day. There can only be a realization that it must come from the Lord, knowing that is where He resides. Yet you have tried to pray to God about it, but it is too deep to get to and it feels like no use. It is like a well so deep and "having nothing to draw from it." There are no words to speak, so you remain speechless, and that adds to wonder.
Any and all attempts to get to the bottom of it by reading more, and hoping a word will leap off the page, or the Holy Spirit illuminating a particular verse. Yet nothing happens, in fact, the word becomes "like a spring shut up, a fountain sealed." No amount of trying to fast, worship, listen to sermons, or try to seek for a word, or discuss it with friends works, but only adds to the stripping away of everything. The stripping away of all your attempts is the finality. What is happening to you is Jesus is calling you from the depths of your heart to enter into His depths. Walk quietly before Him. Do not try to force anything, just go your way, and let Him reveal to you what He wants.
The songwriter of Psalm 42:7, "Deep calleth unto deep..." is expressing the fact that his soul was in deep need of God. The psalmist calls out from his place of profound need for the unfathomable greatness of God. A deep need calls for a deep remedy.
James Smith and Robert Lee beautifully elaborate on this meaning of deep calls to deep in their multi-volume work Handfuls on Purpose for Christian Workers and Bible Students: “The deep of man’s need calleth unto the deep of God’s fulness; and the deep of God’s fulness calleth unto the deep of man’s need. Between our emptiness and His all-sufficiency there is a great gulf. . . . Deep calleth unto deep. The deep mercy of God needs our emptiness, into which it might pour itself. . . . Nothing can fully meet the depth of our need but the depth of His Almighty fulness.”
"Every growth of spiritual life, from the first tender shoot until now, has been the work of the Holy Spirit.... The only way to more life is the Holy Spirit. You will not even know that you want more unless He works in you to desire it.... The Spirit of God must come and make the letter alive, transfer it to your heart, set it on fire, and make it burn within you, or else its divine force and majesty will be hid from your eyes.... Prayer is the creation of the Holy Spirit. We cannot do without prayer, and we cannot pray without the Holy Spirit." ~Charles Spurgeon

Yesterday I learned along with many others that our beloved brother in the Lord Fred Tomlinson went home "to ever be with the Lord." There are no words that can come to me naturally to declare how much I loved him, and still do. You see Fred's life commanded a real presence. Not his own, but the Lord's.
It was immediate when he spoke and taught. He highly influenced me as a believer walking home to heaven for the rest of my life. Seldom in life is there anyone to follow. Perhaps one or two will make a mark in our lives. Mostly we turn to the past to read volumes of works by people who have lived long ago. Beautiful, inspired works that will ever speak to us, because they were received from the Lord. Fred Tomlinson was a very humble teacher, and yet so powerful. His messages were resonating and penetrating. He always pointed to the cross and the heavenly pastureland that follows.
Even in his final message five days before his passing, he was speaking and emphasizing about the love of God, the eternal, indestructible power of His endless love. He spoke about the finished work of the cross, and how Satan does not possess the power to have the last word of our lives. He was a true torch-bearer. You see, he passed away and entered into heaven, now rejoicing with those he loved to read about and learn from. Most especially with Jesus Christ, the One whom his soul loved more than anything or anyone.
In essence, Fred has really only begun to live. Fred left us with an example to follow after. And where he is, we will be shortly. As we live, we will now run our races in more dedication, commitment. I want to be where he is one day and so do you. Let us run our race with patience, looking unto Jesus Christ the Author and Finisher of our Faith with great joy.
"I want to know one thing, the way to heaven; how to land safe on that happy shore. God Himself has condescended to teach the way; for this end He came from heaven. He hath written it down in a book. Give me that book! At any price give me the Book of God!” ~John Wesley

It is without a doubt that those who have set themselves to serve and obey the Lord will be a direct target of the enemy. As an old puritan writer said, "Sooner or later the saint of God will have to go into the ring with Satan." Satan does not have much interest in the lukewarm believer. They are no threat to him. They pose no problem to his plans. Sometimes they are actually helpful to him. Right now many true believers at this time are experiencing overt attacks from the enemy they never imagined. We are at the end and Satan knows it well, and therefore he is doing his best to cast the children of God down to the ground.
I thought about something I read in Ephesians where Paul calls himself "the prisoner of the Lord." After the heights come the plains, in the Bible and our everyday life. The glory and the wonder of the last verses of Ephesians chapter three, Paul speaks about the love of Christ and the fullness of God, such as, "Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. Then they are followed by "I the prisoner of the Lord" In the next chapter.
It seems so much that most of Paul's ministry was always being challenged, limited, and hindered. There are strange limitations sometimes in our work itself. Sometimes we ourselves experience frustrations, inabilities, and chains known perhaps only to Him who knows all. However, Paul opens the way of peace here as he always does. If we really realize that most of the letters to the churches written by Paul were written from prison, we would have a different light on things.
I believe that many of you feel that you are also in some kind of a prison. You cannot escape the increasing persecution of those in your own homes, people you live by, and work with. Not to mention even the strangest, fiery trials that have come out of nowhere. If you are, then you are the prisoner of the Lord, and you are not alone any more than Paul was. Jesus is with you in this war, and Satan cannot win. He already lost. Your life is hid with Christ in God. Persevering is the badge of the believer. In the end, we will receive the Victor's Crown, and there will be a banqueting table for those who warred, suffered long, and will live on forever as "more than conquerors." Do not give up your ground, it was given to you by the Lord, and it is Him that will keep it to your glorying end. You can rely on it.
"We are foolish to expect to serve God without opposition: the more zealous we are, the more sure are we to be assailed... Glory be to God, we know the end of the war. The great dragon shall be cast out and for ever destroyed, while Jesus and they who are with him shall receive the crown. Let us sharpen our swords to-night, and pray the Holy Spirit to nerve our arms for the conflict. Never battle so important, never crown so glorious. Every man to his post, ye warriors of the cross, and may the Lord tread Satan under your feet shortly!" ~Charles Spurgeon

There comes a time in a Believer's life where they begin to yearn to know Jesus for themselves. They want to hear the Lord alone and not from others. There starts to become a hollowness to the human teaching. There has been something that has been put within them long ago from the beginning of their new birth. That something is an ever-growing deep hunger meant to outlast endless studies and sermons. Over time there is this feeling of wanting to stand on their own personal ground. This is a mark of increasing spiritual maturity.
There is a restlessness in all the horizontal learning. Even the great masters of divinity that are dearly beheld, respected and admired become flat. A greater, far deeper wanting of Jesus for themselves outlasts everything. They want HIM. In the word, there were many people who heard of Jesus, but after awhile they wanted to see and hear Him for themselves. There are millions of others that never have this ever-increasing hunger. They are content to walk according to the course of this world, and want to go no further. But there is more. Perhaps you have been feeling the same way.
One thing I do know, is that when a person stays consistent, always persevering in prayer, reading the word, obeying the Lord, over a long period of time something happens. Though all has been said and done, that great deep hunger to know the Lord, and to see Him for themselves, remains standing like a great and mighty, immovable mountain. It is in the persevering that you will see God with your spiritual eyes, and your prayers will be weighty like the unmovable mountain of your yearning. This is evidence that you are getting nearer to heaven than ever before.
“If we make a full surrender, God will give us something better than we have ever known before. We will get a new vision of Jesus Christ, and will thank God not only in this life but in the life to come.” – D.L. Moody

All of us have at one time or another experienced praying for a person who was a difficult case. However, there are other people that are more than difficult, they are what I refer to as the extreme cases. Today I spoke about the Gadarene Demoniac. We do not know his real name, it was never made known to us. We only know from the word that he was like a ravenous, violent, wild beast of a man. He was naked and lived in a graveyard, no doubt, completely filthy and vile. No doubt a terrifying man. He was always roaming around those graves and mountains, crying and cutting himself with stones. Which magnifies his torment. We read that men tried to control him with chains and fetters, but he broke them off of himself.
This is a very clear understanding that the power of Satan was in him, controlled and occupied him. We get such a horrid, devastating picture of the worst of the depravity of man in this account. We know this man had a home, friends and a family. But they too got to the sad point where they gave up on him. No doubt he was loved. Perhaps you know someone like this man. A person whom you love but is so far gone that you are exhausted and your heart is crushed. That your thousands of prayers, and millions of tears have not made any difference.
This story is more than just a story. It was purposely recorded for you and me, and for all time to show that Jesus has conquered Satan and his cruel kingdom forever. To show you that what He did for this tormented, to-far-gone man, He will do for your loved one too. He hears you. You see a day came where Jesus went to that tormented, miserable, lost man. I believe our Father in heaven saw the millions of tears shed by those closest to him, and was moved by them. So He sent His Son to heal that man, restore him and give him a peaceful, beautiful life. And not only that, but Jesus brought healing to the hearts of his family and friends, and became a great evangelist.
I believe He sees your tears too, just like those who loved that man. And Jesus will go to that one person whom you feel is past help too. He told us to pray, and why would God tell us to pray and not answer? He made it clear that He would, and He will do it. Your loved one, is under the bondage and control of those same demonic spirits, and that same Lord will destroy their hold too. Have faith in God, in His Son. It is His will and pleasure to destroy the works of the devil to those who cry to Him. He means to do it. His name is Faithful. He will have the last word as the lover of their souls.
"We are foolish to expect to serve God without opposition: the more zealous we are, the more sure are we to be assailed... Glory be to God, we know the end of the war. The great dragon shall be cast out and for ever destroyed, while Jesus and they who are with him shall receive the crown. Today a person asked me why God did all those miracles and wonders in the Old Testament but wondered why He does not do the same thing for us now? I had notes for a lesson I was going to do for today. However, when I read his message it sparked something in my heart and laid all aside. I explained that while those in the old testament did experience all those mighty miracles and wonders displayed in great power, they never at any time brought any of those people closer to God in heart's in love.
In fact all the covenant He made along with the laws and commandments did not help. Neither did the warnings of all the prophets sent to them. The very people He chose to make a great nation of, and to make a great name through never loved Him. Only a few that we read about. The end was a return into captivity. What we have now they did not have, and what they had we do not have. What we have is far and above, eternally and unspeakably greater. We were given God's one and only begotten Son Jesus Christ to pay for our sins now and forever. The old testament people did not have Him and all He has done for us.
We have assurance of everlasting life. They didn't. We have a hope that does not disappoint. They didn't. We have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They didn't. We can go directly to God in prayer. They couldn't. We have an inheritance kept in heaven for us. They did not. We know the Son of God in a intimate and personal way. They did not. We are born again. They were not. Yet in their going into captivity, God told them, "Yet will I be to them a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come.” Afterwards to be brought out and restored.
You see, we have been given everything, and much more than signs and wonders. We have the One with us, Jesus Christ who is the great sign and wonder that we have put our eternal faith in. He is to us, in this administration of time, "a little sanctuary" to "in this present evil age." And He will bring us out of it and into glory to be with Him forever. He is a little sanctuary to the lonely, the dying, the hungry and and to those that thirst. Is that you? Then He is your little sanctuary even now and always until He brings you home to heaven. You can depend on it.
"A little faith will bring your soul to heaven; a great faith will bring heaven to your soul." Charles Haddon Spurgeon

This morning in I read these words in the book of Ezekiel 7:6, "An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come." Though this had to do with the nation of Israel, my eyes zeroed in on the words regarding there being "an end." In fact, five times it is declared "an end is come." It struck me that there is an end to all things and everything. I thought about ancient civilizations that no longer exist because an end came for them. There have been nations that once stood as great earthly mountains that were overthrown. An end came for them. They no longer exist. There have been great rulers and kings, whose end came and they no longer exist. As well as individuals who once lived and whether good or bad, and end came for their earthly mortal existence.
There are people everyday making their plans for something a year or decades from now, even tomorrow, and their end will suddenly come. Believers lightly toss out this saying, "tomorrow is promised unto no man." Yet there is nothing that speaks or shows that they believe it. What would happen if we began to live as though we can be called home at any time? There are people everyday that are entering into eternity and were not prepared. They took everything for granted. They died, and in the eternal state everything they ever said and did, is now and forever sealed. "The dead praise not the Lord, nor any that go down into silence."
This is not a game. How we are living our lives is going ahead of us into heaven being recorded. This is not a call to live in a some morbidity of a religious, joyless state. Rather it is a question proposed to you today that must be taken into serious consideration. Are you ready to enter into eternity at a moment's notice? What are you prepared to carry over the water's edge? The edge of eternity? There is an expected end for the righteous. In Ecclesiastes 11:3 it says, "... and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be." Meaning, what we are when we die, the state and condition we are in, is what we will be forever. Like molten iron poured into mold and cooled.
"Death comes to the ungodly man as a penal infliction, but to the righteous as a summons to his Father's palace. To the sinner it is an execution, to the saint an undressing from his sins and infirmities. Death to the wicked is the King of terrors. Death to the saint is the end of terrors, the commencement of glory." Charles Spurgeon
