John and Gordy kick off the show with their campaign to win Madison Magazine’s Best of Madison award for Radio Team. Vote now at madisonmagazine.com/bom! We dive into the National Day Calendar, and check the history books with Sam before welcoming on Dr. Tim Slekar, one half of the BustED Pencils podcast duo. They take a look at all the government firings going on, checking in on the Department of Ed, and the defunding of research institutions, which have been swept under the rug recently amid higher-profile news. They also chat about how kids can actually opt-out of standardized testing, widely seen as a waste of educational resources, and a point of stress for many kids. Just before we say goodbye to Tim, we touch on the Science of Reading once again, the debunked curriculum now being blamed for kid’s illiteracy. Wrapping up the first hour, we get a preview of the rant to come in the next hour, with words from Malcom Nance, about how the fight is here and now.

Guests: Tim SlekarIn hour two, we get to the Big Story: words from Andrew Natsios, formerly of USAID, on 60 Minutes. He describes how we may be headed to a constitutional crisis, and his anger at the dissolution of the aid organization. We chat with Civic Media Meteorologist Brittney Merlot, checking in on the weather, and reach the bottom of the hour with a listener call describing Musk as a “parasitic illegal immigrant.” Later, Mike McCabe joins us as he does every Wednesday, chatting about winter sports, and also his latest blog post on Substack’s Ebiyan House. It covers the hardships of Mike’s upbringing on a farm, but also the friendship and community found from it – with the example of two barn raisings he was a part of.

We check in with our producer Sam for Today in History, then dive into Idiocracy, talking YouTube’s change of policy on AI, as well as members of NASA and other departments losing their jobs. We close out the hour with Trump’s take on work from home, and take a look at his record of getting work done, with the aid of the Trump Golf Tracker.

In hour two, we get to the Big Story: the impending attack on media by new FCC chair and hardcore MAGA Brendan Carr. While we’re still on the air, we talk with Brittney Merlot about the weather and frigid temperatures we’re facing today. Allison Madison, Director of the Wisconsin Salt Wise Program joins us after the bottom of the hour to talk salt: on the roads, and in our (soft water) pipes, along with how we can reduce our salt use. Closing out the show, the guys mention once again that today is Primary Day, encouraging their listeners to go out and vote.

Guests: Allison MadisonJohn and Gordy kick off the show in usual fashion, covering the National Day Calendar, and also checking in with Sam for Today in History. In Idiocracy for today, we cover the first case of an interstate crime related to abortion, where Louisiana is attempting to extradite a New York doctor to the state for prescribing abortion pills to a patient there. Shifting gears, we talk money with another Web Wisdom on the new House budget, with MASSIVE impending cuts, stealing from the poor and giving to the rich. Closing out the hour though, we look to the lighter side, with Lisa Bernard from the Dane County Humane Society.

Guests: Lisa BernardIn hour two the guys get political. We chat about background checks (and the lack thereof) for DOGE with a clip from Rep. Suozzi. The discussion turns to the (accidentally) fired nuclear safety team (!), so to prevent a meltdown we check in with Brittney Merlot for a check of the weather, saying the snow will be gone in a week (a different kind of meltdown). We return to the topic of “un-firing” critical employees, including nuclear safety engineers, after being cut by Musk, but are cut short by Paul Soglin, former Madison Mayor, who is on the phone for his monthly appearance. Despite our hopes of an uplifting message from the Mayor, he’s got bad news for us: We’ve got the early stages of a coup on our hands. They also touch on the topic of the US’s new image in the international sphere: with our allies and adversaries, Gaza, Ukraine, and elsewhere.

Guests: Paul SoglinJohn and Gordy kick off the week with complaints about the snow we received the weekend (they dread shoveling). We check out the National Day Calendar as a distraction and check with Sam for Today in History. After recounting Kathryn’s wild 60th birthday party on Saturday, we dive into Idiocracy, this time talking about the big SNL 50th anniversary show over the weekend, with a dash of politics thrown in, as John covers the latest government agency to be overtaken by DOGE. Wrapping up hour one, we touch briefly on immigration, with a story on how its keeping Wisconsin’s population afloat, amidst declining birthrates.

In hour two, John delivers to us another set of Web Wisdoms, this time discussing the misinterpretation of scientific articles, and another on the true intentions behind Musk’s trashing of government agencies – complete deregulation. We check in with Brittney Merlot to talk Valentine’s Day and look at the forecast, before we hear from Education Secretary Linda McMahon, throwing around the idea of banning African American studies from the classroom (!). Later, Jimmy K joins the show as he does every Friday, to give us a preview of what’s on tap for Max Ink Radio, and other local music this weekend.

Guests: Jimmy KIts Friday! John manhandles the show away from Gordy this Valentine’s Day, going on a tirade against the “fake holiday,” luckily, we calm him down with some real fake holidays on the National Day Calendar. We call up Pam Jahnke from the Midwest Farm Report, and chat about the state of snowmobiling in Wisconsin, and also get an update on the latest in the egg shortage. Later, we dive into Idiocracy, talking about a neo-Nazi protest in Ohio (and, thankfully, a larger counter-protest), and discuss all the Inspectors General being fired by Elon Musk. Closing out hour one, after a long drought, we get another edition of MAGAs Say the Darndest Things, this time about voter fraud.

Guests: Pam JahnkeIn hour two, the guys tune in to the Voice of America, which is next on the chopping block for Trump and Musk. We take a look at the weather, chatting with Brittney Merlot about the (obscene) amount of snow we received last night. Getting back to some stories, we hear from Hegseth, now bending his knee to Putin. Reminiscent of Neville Chamberlain, no? Later, the discussion turns to health, as a judge has ordered CDC and NIH webpages, taken down by DOGE, be reposted, as Trump violated several laws in taking them down. Closing out the show, we welcome in Kathryn, our station manager, for a very special 60th birthday celebration!
