  • The Unscience of Reading

With the absolute dumping of snow we received yesterday, John and Gordy kick off commiserating about shoveling, a Wisconsin tradition. We dive into the National Day Calendar (its Cheddar Day!) and check in with Sam for Today in History. Later, instead of Idiocracy we welcome on Dr. Tim Slekar as we do every Thursday. With the dissolution of the Department of Education looming, we tap his wisdom on what we’ll do next. We also dive into the Science of Reading – a debunked, non-curriculum, that has been adopted in the name of antiwokeness, and is actually making reading scores drop like flies.

  • The Great Dictator

In hour two we're talking finances! The guys dive into why the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau exists, which Trump and DOGE want to do away with. We also take a look back at a prior realization, by Alan Greenspan, that deregulation was bad, with words from him about what caused the great recession. Later, we chat with Mike McCabe as we do every Wednesday, this time by phone, about the uncanny similarities, yet stark differences, between Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler. Chaplin's distain for Hitler was showcased in his 1940 parody movie "The Great Dictator." Wrapping up the show, the conversation turns to AI, as Mike reflects on JD Vance's call to not regulate the new technology.

  • Pour’n Yer Heart Out

In hour two, the guys dive forward, looking to the future, with words from George Conway, about how he thinks the effective end of democracy and our constitution will come about, when the time comes that Trump and US Marshals stop adhering to judge's orders. With their faces usually stuck in microphones, they take a look outside to see what our meteorologist Brittney Merlot has brought to the skies - snow! And more to come. At the bottom of the hour, we touch on how the dismantling of USAID is already impacting farmers, and later, we shift gears completely, welcoming in Alisa Toninato from FeLion Studios to chat all about iron casting. This weekend, she's hosting Pour'n Yer Heart Out, an art casting event open to the public, where over 2,000 lbs will be melted down and poured into community-made molds. Closing out the show, we give a call to Judy Davidoff, publisher of the Isthmus, to chat about some of the stories in this month's paper.

  • Go Back to Home Depot

John and Gordy kick off the show with their usual banter before John launches into a tirade against plastic straws, which Trump is trying to reverse the phase-out of. For a semblance of normalcy Gordy walks us through the National Day Calendar, and we check in with Sam for Today in History, and to talk bikes. In Idiocracy today, the guys cover just how DOGE is evaluating federal employees, in a kangaroo court by his 20-somethings minions. We hear from Robin Vos, who we don't like, about Mike Gableman, who we don't like even more. Funny thing is, Mike, who should be disbarred for challenging the 2020 election, is getting to be close friends with Brad Schimel, candidate for SCOWI. Closing out, we cover the story about how funding cut to the NIH and other agencies are crippling research at universities.

  • DOGE, Take Out The Trash: Musk

In hour two, after chatting about indoor landscaping, we get to another Web Wisdom found by John, a mock interview with Elon Musk about the true intentions of DOGE. We hear a clip of Stephen Colbert about the efforts to defund the National Weather Service, and also find out why dismantling USAID was low-hanging fruit for Musk. Later, John covers (continued) use by Tesla child labor in cobalt mines, and a rapid-fire of other short stories. Closing out, we turn an eye to Musk and DOGE's next target: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

  • Save Your Pennies

John and Gordy kick off the week reflecting on the weekend's events, including the Super Bowl, Gordy's appearance at the Frozen Assets Fest, and the musical Shucked! at the Overture. After checking through the National Day Calendar, the guys chat with Pam Jahnke from the Midwest Farm Report, chatting about commercials last night during the Big Game, and a system of registration for hobby farm owners, now that bird flu is taking hold. Later, in Idiocracy, the guys talk pennies, with the news that Trump is ordering production of the one-cent piece to cease (!). Also, we touch on Illinois Governor JD Pritzker's (fake) proclamation claiming Lake Michigan for his own state, and wrap up the hour hearing of an interesting plan by Jamie Raskin to start a class action suit against Elon Musk.

  • Weekly Best of John and Gordy Show for Feb 8

It was a wild week for John and Gordy (and all of us!) as they spread the word about the wild going-ons in Washington. Aside from that, this week they talked with Caitlin McAleavey from the Clean Lakes Alliance about the Frozen Assets Fest on Saturday, as well as with Dr. Tim Slekar of BustED Pencils about the plan to dismantle the Department of Education, surprising pushback to school choice programs, and more in the realm of education.

  • I’m a Christian – Poor Me!

In hour two, the guys dive into an upcoming executive order by Trump to root out "Christian bias." To distract ourselves, we check in with Brittney Merlot for a check of the weather, and to chat once again about this weekend's Frozen Assets Fest. Before the bottom of the hour, John covers a story about the Proud Boys, who have lost their trademark to a Black church in a defamation case, and also news about Trump and Musk, who plan to allow only white immigration from South Africa (!). Later, to wrap up the show, we welcome Jimmy K in to the studio for an update on Rökker, still recovering from his heart attack, and also to look at what's on tap for Max Ink Radio and local music this weekend.

  • Buyout or Mass Firing?

Its Friday! John and Gordy kick off by sharing a laugh over a clip from the Daily Show, before diving into the National Day Calendar, and chatting about the Beatles in Today in History. In Idiocracy, John, who also works for the US Census, chats about the buyout of government employees, and the offer he received - but isn't eligible to take. We learn about AG Pam Bondi's efforts to allow more foreign influence in the government, and wrapping up the hour, look at some cases of Trump's tariffs already having an impact on shoppers.

  • Crisis

In hour two, the guys discuss the constitutional crisis we're facing, with words from Dahlia Lithwick. We check in with our meteorologist Brittney Merlot to find out why everything is so icy today, while the guys panic over her excitement to go ice sailing this weekend at the Frozen Assets Fest. Back to politics, we hear Derrick Van Orden's approval of Trump's plan to turn Gaza into a resort, and later, get wet, talking about Trump's release of water from California reservoirs - in the north, where they had no effect on the LA wildfires. Wrapping up, John covers the story about Trump pulling us out of the UN Human Rights Council (!).
