Daylight Savings Time is Whack

The US Senate just approved making daylight savings time permanent for the entire nation. Will the House pass it? And what’s the deal with the California vote in 2018 to end this clock changing nonsense? I’m tired of the twice a year clock change, are you?

Ukraine and the New McCarthyism

Hosts on The View want the government to investigate Tucker Carlson and Tulsi Gabbard for “spreading false Russian propaganda. What ever happened to free speech and freedom of the press? We take a closer look at the Ukraine-Russia conflict and discuss whether the US military should get involved.

Fernando Tatis and Baseball Happiness

Tatis broke his wrist in a foolish motorcycle accident. Sure, it is a maturity issue, but this kind of behavior is not in his long-term self-interest. Tatis is his own worst enemy in his own Pursuit of Happiness.

Poway News Update

We revisit the failed recall of Steve Vaus, reactions from people in the Stoneridge community, a follow-up on the Pete Neild podcast where he declined to run for Poway City Council, and my own meeting with declared candidate Brian Peppin. Plus, I share my own experiences in a unique Poway backyard where Padres pitchers visit the Pitching Guru Dom Johnson. Plus, my personal positive recommendation of Alex from A-Tech Appliance Repair.

Putin Justifying Invasion of Ukraine based on Blood and Religion

Russian troops are at the Ukrainian border and invasion is imminent! Biden is trying to negotiate but doing so on weak footing. Meanwhile Trump is calling Putin a “genius” for his strategy. What in the hell is going on here? While these political leaders are consumed with tribalism, they are missing the opportunity to oppose Putin on the moral basis of our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Justin Trudeau Emergency Orders Violating Individual Rights

The truckers had a righteous cause opposing the vaccine mandate, but their “Freedom Convoy” ended up violating the liberty of Canadians to pursue their happiness. It was a mess and now Trudeau is making it worse. Trudeau’s emergency powers are leading to police brutality in the streets and the seizing of financial assets with out due process or trial. How can you pursue your happiness in an environment like this?

The Failed Recall of Poway Mayor Steve Vaus

They never got enough signatures to get the recall on the ballot. I really wish the recall spokesperson Chris Olps could have joined me on a podcast conversation to make the case for the recall, but he never responded to requests. So, I break down all of the grievances and share my thoughts and comments. It is interesting that the primary objection of the recall proponents is the massive development in Poway. That development is an example of Poway property owners and future Poway residents pursuing their happiness. We look at tribalism here in our hometown of Poway, “The City in the Country.”

NFL Studying Marijuana to Help Players Manage Pain

My alma mater UC San Diego was just awarded a $500,000 grant from the NFL to study the impact of cannabis as a pain relief medication.

Isn’t the answer obvious?

We take a look at the UCSD study and discuss well known examples of players suspensions for marijuana or opioids. We also take a broader look of cannabis as a medicine and question my hometown’s policy of keeping dispensaries illegal.

Canadian Truckers Protest

Then we discuss the Canadian Truckers protest. The left wingers are outraged by the chaos caused by these deplorables. Meanwhile the right wingers are fired up and gleefully causing disruption. I share an alternative point of view that both praises and slams the truckers. It all comes down to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. But for whom?

Closing Quote:"You do not have the right to parade through the public streets or to obstruct public thoroughfares. You have the right of assembly, yes, on your own property, and on the property of your adherents or your friends. But nobody has the “right” to clog the streets." Ayn Rand

Personal Success as a Skier, Student, Model and Symbol of International Unity

Eileen Gu won the gold in the Big Air freestyle event Tuesday while competing for China in the Winter Olympics. But this episode is much more than her athletic feats.

Gu’s “right double 1440 safety” scored a 93.75 and vaulted her into first place. Her lead didn’t last long. She headed to her last jump needing at least ninety-three points to leap from third to first. Her final trick, called a left double 1620 with a safety grab, scored 94.5 points and landed Gu a gold medal.

This is a remarkable story of personal achievement. After all, shouldn’t these celebrations of athletic success be what the Olympics are all about?  Sadly, too many people make this all about nationalist ideals and pitting one nation against another.

Gu, an American citizen born in San Francisco, has been the target of a flood of hateful comments because of her choice to represent China in the 2022 Beijing Olympics…  a decision based on her love of her mother who was born in Shanghai and raised in Beijing.

In Eileen Gu’s press conference, she discussed her gold winning performance in musical terms by describing the rhythm and motion of the jump. She discussed how this was about her own efforts to “break your own boundaries” and to highlight her character and perseverance on an international stage.

This is a young lady that is pursuing her happiness in all dimensions of her life as an Olympic gold medalist, recent admission to Stanford, a piano prodigy, and a Louis Vuitton model.

We also discuss Eileen’s mother Yan Gu who emigrated to America, received a post graduate degree, and settled in San Francisco. She also was pursuing her happiness in a nation that historically has welcomed immigrants.

California Lifting Mask Mandates

We also discuss the recent lifting of the mask mandates in California for vaccinated people. The timing is interesting considering the recent, mask less photo ops of California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and high-profile Democrat Stacey Abrams.

Joe Rogan’s Big Offer from Rumble

Finally, we get into the huge Joe Rogan story and his new $100 million offer from Rumble.

Your Life Goal Should be Happiness

How happy are you on a 0-10 scale? We discuss the topic of The Happiness Dashboard. This system (similar to the Wheel of Life) provides a framework to score your happiness in every major category of life:

FinancesCareerPhysical & Mental HealthFun & RecreationPhysical EnvironmentFamily & FriendsRomanceGrowth & Learning

This exercise helped me break out of a mental rut. The result was greater focus and energy to pursue my own happiness.

John Riley Project: Pursuing Happiness

I also share my thoughts on the John Riley Project and the pivot I want to make in 2022 to provide more content around Pursuing Happiness.

We also discuss a range of other issues including Ukraine, Joe Rogan, Neil Young, Inflation, COVID, MLB Hall of Fame voting, Micah Pietila-Wiggs, University of New Mexico, Little League World Series, Poway development, PUSD student depression, NFL playoffs, BMX, and Ayn Rand.

“This is Worth Living For”

The maintenance of life and the pursuit of happiness are not two separate issues. To hold one’s own life as one’s ultimate value, and one’s own happiness as one’s highest purpose are two aspects of the same achievement. Existentially, the activity of pursuing rational goals is the activity of maintaining one’s life; psychologically, its result, reward and concomitant is an emotional state of happiness. It is by experiencing happiness that one lives one’s life, in any hour, year or the whole of it. And when one experiences the kind of pure happiness that is an end in itself—the kind that makes one think: “This is worth living for”—what one is greeting and affirming in emotional terms is the metaphysical fact that life is an end in itself.

In today’s podcast episode we take a look back at the top 2021 stories in the Poway and Rancho Bernardo area. Our friends at Pomerado News highlighted the top local stories. We take the time to reflect on each of them. These top local stories span the spectrum of good, the bad and the ugly. In our podcast we cover these six stories:

COVID Testing Chaos

In our second segment I share our adventure dealing with COVID testing on a family vacation to the United Kingdom. The Omicron variant is raging. We are seeing a surge of new COVID-19 cases. This has resulted in a chaotic testing process with shifting objectives as the plan rolled out. We discuss the testing regiment that we had to endure just to get on an airplane. Plus we share highlights of our British Adventure.

New CA Laws for 2022

Finally, we discuss the new laws enacted for 2022. How will these new laws affect your everyday life? Many new laws will definitely have a positive impact. Other new laws are proper corrections of previous flaws in the system.

Last week I experienced the positive energy and festivities along Poway's Candy Cane Lane (or should I say Candy Cane Courts). To say that this community “decorates in excess” is an understatement! We discuss the history, the planning, and the mob scene that shows up at Candy Cane Lane in a small corner of Poway.

We also explore a wide range of issues in Poway including the Mayor Vaus recall, the 2022 election, development along Poway Rd, slow vs fast growth, and the concept of representative government. A special guest joined us to discuss all of the above, including a possible candidacy for city council in 2022.

Finally, we broke down the recent Elon Musk interview with the Wall Street Journal. There were so many topics covered including the federal government deficit, the role of government in the economy, Tesla, SpaceX, autonomous driverless cars, infrastructure, EV charging stations, estate tax and so much more. We even had some fun commenting on the trend of political and business leaders with their unusual hairstyles.

Somewhere in the podcast episode we also comment on the new COVID mask mandate in California and the approval of SANDAG’s $160B regional transportation plan. This podcast episode is all over the place!
