John Riley Project

The JRP Happy Hour invites podcast listeners, guests, and fans to join us in a wide open, free form conversation during a livestream.  Challenge me on my thoughts from previous episodes, bring up your own issues, or just hang out and have a fun discussion.  This week’s episode features both Pete Neild and Mike Polite.  We discuss Corvettes, Maui, the automobile shortage, lead generation, California Recall, COVID mandates, ancestry, Afghanistan, and a range of other topics.

If you would like to participate in one of these Happy Hour podcasts, please visit https://johnrileyproject.com/contact/.  These will occur Fridays at 4pm as my schedule permits.

We break down the good, bad and ugly of America’s involvement in Afghanistan for the past 20 years.  Is there any good?  Probably just bad and ugly.  President Biden’s speech from Aug 16th provides a good jumping off point to discuss a range of issues including the reasons for the initial entry into war, the politics of the war, and the failures of presidents and military leaders.  Did our actions in Afghanistan represent the core values of America?  Does America reflect President Reagan’s often referenced “shining city on a hill”?  We also get into immigration, the recall of California Governor Gavin Newsom, Personal Independence, Poway Firefighters and our Happy Hour podcast episode on Friday.

Imagine a road trip where gas stations are giving away free gas. That’s the equivalent of what I experienced in this road trip that offered free charging up Highway 395 to Lake Tahoe and back home through the Nevada desert. We discuss the flare ups of the COVID delta variant, mask mandates, Darwinism, and workable solutions for businesses. I also share my story in Incline Village, good times with a good friend and winning big at the craps table. We also discuss Airbnb, Ridgecrest, China Lake, the value of alone time, and the old mining town of Tonopah Nevada.

Kathryn Cloward joined us to reflect on the passing of Father Joe Carroll.  Kathryn is the author of the recent book: “Father Joe, Life Stories of a Hustler Priest.”  We shared so many wonderful stories how Father Joe made an impact in Kathryn’s life and the lives of so many people in the San Diego Community. Since the passing of Father Joe, there has been an outpouring of love for the good work he has done to help the homeless.

The Audible version of the book “Father Joe, Life Stories of a Hustler Priest” is now available.  The audio version is narrated by Kathryn and includes audio segments by Father Joe.

Kathryn also has a children’s book “Father Joe’s Six Golden Seeds” opening up Father Joe’s message of compassion, forgiveness, respect, helping others and empowerment.

As I celebrate my 17th year of being self-employed, I share 7 key lessons I learned as an entrepreneur.  Starting my own business has been the most challenging and rewarding assignment of my professional life.  If I could travel back in Mr. Peabody’s Way Back Machine and give myself some advice, these are the 7 things I would tell myself.  We discuss product development, investment, hiring strategies and building your business so it is easy to sell.  But most of all, it has to start with your needs and your vision as an entrepreneur.

One of the bright spots from the pandemic are workers deciding to take their life seriously and quit their bad job.  There is so much opportunity now with the worker shortage where people can earn more money with better benefits and less stress.  Plus, there is still so much opportunity to build skills and start your own side hustle.  We also discuss the trap of comfort zones and how they prevent you from growing.

California has opened back up!  It’s COVID Independence Day!  We discuss the details of California’s reopening including the response from local businesses and the recall of Governor Gavin Newsom.  We also take a moment to discuss the upcoming Juneteenth holiday (June 19th) and why it should be thought of as a 2nd American Independence Day.  Finally, we discuss the power of mission statements and vision statements to help give businesses a clear focus.  I comment on my own mission statement exercise of the John Riley Project.

Today is Flag Day so discuss the American Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance.  We do a deep dive on the history of the Pledge from an article written by Connor Boyack that shows the socialist and authority loving goals of the Pledge’s author.  I share some the portions of the Pledge that I like and the parts that I struggle with.  We also discuss getting an American flag for my home, Colin Kaepernick, Francis Bellamy, the Civil War, Kiwanis, and Carl Sagan.

A new housing development in Rancho Penasquitos is causing an uproar in this San Diego community.  We discuss The Junipers project and its impact on the local area.  We also discuss NIMBYism, the California housing crisis, and the greater San Diego economy.  We find many similar talking points to the objections of housing in my hometown of Poway.  Plus a few tangents on wealth inequality, Santa Fe New Mexico and the Cedar and Witch Creek Fires.
