Finally, the bombshell interview this week with Meghan Markel and Prince Harry set off a firestorm of controversy and accusations of racism in the royal family. We’ll share our own reactions on the interview and what, if any implications will result from it.

Cuomo is in trouble (deservedly so) on new revelations of inaccurate COVID19 numbers. – Where this scandal particularly hurts is that it shows that behind the veneer of being forthright – he was flat out lying.

Unlike 9/11 after the shock of those events we went back to normal behaviors -but because the pandemic is so broad and mutating – Schools/workplaces and customs may be forever changed. Will we bounce back or will there be lasting impacts from the COVID19 pandemic?

This week, the 800lb gorilla in the room is the 2nd Impeachment trial. The evidence against the former President has been very effective, but conviction looks highly doubtful. 47% of self-identified republicans said it’s very important to remain loyal to the president and 56% of the public feels the president should be convicted. What’s more important than conviction or exoneration is healing, but how can we heal without any accountability for the events of January 6th?

If Trump is not convicted, how might that embolden future presidents’ behavior. If he is convicted what does that say about holding other presidents to account for what many view as other crimes, including George W. Bush and Obama?

We’ll also look at the latest proposed COVID 19 stimulus package. It’s looking like Biden will continue to hold his ground instead of compromising for a smaller package. Is the era of compromise over before it began? What’s clear is that the American people need relief and thought the need for reform is apparent, at this moment – hearts beats charts.

We’ve found that Biden is starting off strong. He was elected with 51% of the vote but is sitting at a 56% approval rating. We’ll provide full details of the poll and also share data from Issue 13 of the Main St./K St. IntelligenSEER report.

Today on the podcast we’ll talk about the rise of populism and how populists on opposite ends of the political divide have more in common than you may think. Can we trace the origins of these movements back to earlier administrations? We’ll dig in and offer some of our thoughts and trace a path from Clinton through Bush, to Obama and Trump – and arrive at GameStop stock – where retail investors saw a big opportunity not only to make money but to make Goliath fall. Is it a good thing? Who wins and what happened?

The biggest story this week is without a doubt the inauguration and on John’s first weekly Presidential report card, Joe Biden gets an ‘A’. A big reason for this is there just wasn’t any drama. No grand promises, a lowering of the temperature and a lot of empathy.

So today on the podcast let’s talk about President Biden’s opportunities and challenges. What reasons might we as a county have to be optimistic or pessimistic as a new administration begins. Can we heal and make legislative progress with a such a slim congressional majority?

We also need to talk about Kellyanne Conway. She’s experiencing a serious domestic crisis playing out in social media. It’s something that shouldn’t be playing out in the public eye and that’s something that we can agree on.

Today we’re going to look at healing, legacy, and how we all can do our part to lower the temperature.

People are losing the art of conversation and the ability to listen. We’ve been thinking a lot about empathy and how that might be going down the drain on both sides of the aisle.

Show Notes:

So how can we begin the process of healing our divisions? Let’s check with what we really believe. How can we then go through a process of reconnecting? One of the things we see in our community (Utica, NY) is that most people think that our diversity is a good thing. This region has welcomed refugees from all over the world who now call Utica home.

One thing is clear – it’s hard to hate someone that you truly see and know. It’s easy to de-humanize based on a caricature.

.

One thought – we need a nationwide network of small conversations in this country. It should be presidential but it should involve religious leaders, activists, civic leaders, business leaders, and be non-partisan. These conversations should launch a dialogue. The most important thing that could come from an initiative like this should be relationships and empathy.

When we started this podcast a year ago – we predicted that 2020 would be the year of protest. That has certainly proven true.

At the end of the day there needs to be accountability across the board. What happened on Wednesday didn’t start with the 2020 election.
