Dr. Derenda Schubert, Executive Director at Bridge Meadows, is on the leading edge of an emerging national conversation around intergenerational living. Bridge Meadows successfully brings together families raising foster children with older people of modest means. Elders receive reduced rents in return for volunteer work with the adoptive families living in the community: everything from babysitting and playing catch with children to working on arts-and-crafts projects and making meals. This model of building communities brings individuals together to form a healthy and life-giving community that will pay dividends in the lives of all who live there. Through her innovative leadership of Bridge Meadows, Schubert has challenged the status quo and traditional ways of "doing business" by integrating child welfare, foster care, and elder services, rather than addressing these needs separately.
