  • 37: Stars In Their Eyes with Rebecca Keane

Rebecca Keane is a standup comedian, writer, and excellent Twitter person. She joined us to talk about the colossus of 90s Saturday evening entertainment, Stars In Their Eyes. We covered all the important topics like the niceness of Matthew Kelly and the bleakness of the intro videos. We brainstormed who we’d be if we ever got the chance to be on it and we managed to shoehorn in an impressive number of Drag Race references. Hope you like it!

  • 36: The Wizard Of Oz with Maria Doyle Kennedy LIVE at the Dublin Podcast Festival

Well we did it. We did a live show at the Dublin Podcast Festival. We did a quiz that went on slightly longer than planned and then we talked to singer and actor Maria Doyle Kennedy of The Commitments, Orphan Black, The Tudors, Dexter, Father Ted, and loads more about The Wizard Of Oz with some detours along the way to talk about mermaids, ghosts, Billie Holiday, and Maria’s directorial debut A Different Kind Of Day, before we finished with a song from Maria and her husband Kieran (who is a lovely man) from Maria’s self-titled new album which is available now.

As you can hear from the episode we were delighted to meet Maria and do a live episode so thanks to everyone who came and thanks to HeadStuff and Aiken for organising a podcast festival and letting us be a part of it. Thank you also to everyone at The Workman’s Club who made it happen and to Sarah Garvey for looking after us.

  • 35: Animaniacs! with Clare Monnelly

Moone Boy and Nowhere Fast‘s Clare Monnelly joins us to talk about Animaniacs. We love Animaniacs a whole lot so it was an extreme pleasure to geek out about it for fifty minutes with our new best friend Clare. We talked about getting meta jokes as a child, the hidden filthy jokes, Pinky And The Brain, Good Idea Bad Idea, Chicken Boo, Slappy Squirrel, Hello Nurse, and all the gang. We also talked about just how impressive Rob Paulsen’s rendition of Yakko’s World is, being scared of Ren & Stimpy, renting games from Xtra-Vision, and the Commodore 64.

  • 33: Oliver! with Fatti Burke

Illustrator Fatti Burke of Irelandopedia, Historopedia, and soon Foclóiropedia joined us to talk about 1968’s Oliver! and all things Oliveresque. We like to wander off topic here at Juvenalia and we really wandered far and wide on this one. We can practically guarantee that this is the only Oliver! podcast that’s also about Alan’s old music teacher, good supermarkets, Babycham, and watching people eat crows. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Bye x

  • Minisode | A Semi-Dramatic Reading of Beach Party | Chapter Three

It’s time for another chapter of RL Stine’s Beach Party. When we last saw Karen and Anne-Marie they were being menaced by Vince and his gang of tough boys. But who’s this? I’ll tell you who’s this. It’s Gerry and Marty, two OTHER boys who have Karen and Anne-Marie’s best interests at heart. This chapter also features an immersive trip to a teen hangout, intrigue, lies, and a tight, form-fitting poncho. We’ll be back with a real episode next week. Bye!

  • 32: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Gareth Lyons

Animator Gareth Lyons joins Alan and Ellen to talk about as many of the incarnations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as they can in an hour. We talk comics, the 1987 cartoon, the 1990 movie, the 2003 series, the 2014 movie, the 2012 series, the action figures, everything basically. Did you know that a lot of the 1987 series was animated in Dublin? Gareth did. Gareth knows a lot about those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was happy to share it with us.

Gareth animated and directed the upcoming RTÉ series Ends Meet which will be airing this autumn and he’s also running the alternative animation festival HACKfest which is on Aug 26th in A4 Sounds.

The TMNT documentary Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is on Netflix

  • Minisode | A Semi-Dramatic Reading of Beach Party | Chapter Three

(CW: There’s a bit near the end of the chapter where some boys get a bit sexually menacing; nothing graphic or physical but we’d prefer if you knew in advance if that’s something you need to know)

It’s been over a year but Ellen and Alan finally remembered to bring their copies of RL Stine’s Beach Party to a Juvenalia recording so here’s a semi-dramatic reading of chapter two. Chapter three will follow in two weeks and sure we’ll see after that.

  • 31: GoldenEye with Peter McGann

Actor, Comedian, and Writer Peter McGann joins Alan and Ellen to talk about the first Pierce Brosnan Bond movie, 1995’s GoldenEye. You might know Peter better as his unsettling alter-ego Liam Nugent or from the Republic of Telly. Today, however, he’s here as our pal who knows a lot about James Bond. Ellen watched GoldenEye for the first time for this podcast. Alan watched it for the second time. Everybody had a lot of opinions about it. We had a very nice time and we hope you will too.

You can see Peter in The Liam Nugent Variety Hour on August 11th in Brewery Corner, Kilkenny as part of the Alternative Kilkenny Arts festival.

Important news: we’re taking Juvenalia to the people! That’s right, Juvenalia LIVE in the Tivoli Theatre, September 27th as part of the Dublin Podcast Festival by HeadStuff and Aiken Promotions.
