It is so easy to get derailed and forget about what we should be doing, even though I meditate each day, my mind wanders over things I need to do today, conversations that happened yesterday, then I remember to bring my focus back to my breathing. If you think about a plane that makes a long journey, the wind will blow it off course many, many times and the pilot has to keep bringing the plane back on track.

It is extremely important for you to get feedback from your learners, either at the end of the course, or periodically throughout the course. Not only does it help you create the best course you can, but it helps a two way conversation with your learners.

If it a new course, I tend to ask for feedback on a regular basis, but if the course has been improved from the feedback I have already gotten, then I might do this just once at the end of the course, again, this depends on how big the course is.

You need to make it the feedback forms anonymous, so that the learner feels that they can give an honest review without them feeling embarrassed.

When you start planning your course, you need to remember that failing to plan, is planning to fail - when you create a course you need to start with the end in mind and then reverse engineer it to the beginning.

You need to think about how you are going to get people from where they are now, to where they need to be. This is so important to get this stage right, right at the beginning as it’s like building a house without any foundations.

Most courses you create will have the theory, or knowledge part delivered first before you deliver the practical part.

Before you set off and spend hours, if not weeks writing your online course, it’s a good idea, first of all, to find out whether or not your course idea is a viable one.

The first online course I ever wrote, was the Teaching qualification. I just wanted to find out if people would be interested in taking this qualification online. So I wrote out the course outline from the learning outcomes of the qualification, put up a sales page, outlined the course lessons and put the first lesson on Moodle, a learning management system.

I have been teaching since the late 80’s and since 2003 I have been teaching courses online. So here are some of my top 6 tips for planning a successful online course.

A landing page is where a person "lands" on after clicking through from an email, ad, or other digital location. Once they’re on your landing page, users are encouraged to take an action, such as joining your list

Every time you write a blog post, put a call to action at the bottom of your blog post. This call to action would be to opt into your mailing list.

Share it on Social Media with links to your landing page and make sure you set up an evergreen campaign so that it gets shared out on social media on a regular basis
