Erik Bergrud from the Kansas City Comets broadcast team and Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal recorded the latest episode of The Blue Turf for the 2023-24 season and we are again NOT at the now "World Famous" Kansas City Soccer Dome but we will do our best to record there again soon.

The Comets have won their last four games (three in regulation and one in overtime) and are very close to clinching a playoff spot. While the first quarter did not go well for the Comets, they responded and dominated the rest of the match and cruised to a win. That combined with an overtime loss by Baltimore brought them to one point away from clinching fourth place and a playoff spot.

Robert Rusert and Thad Bell took advantage of Sporting KC's 2024 media day to record some interviews. Two questions of the day were what they crave after a game and which defender will score the most goals.

First up was Stephen Afrifa and Alenis Vargas. A little discussion about being new guys on the team, the standard questions and some honesty about who is fast and who tackles hardest in practice.

Next up was manager Peter Vermes. We talk about his longevity, passion on the sideline, and much more.

Last but certainly not least we talked with DS 10! Daniel Salloi wanted the 10 for what it means to him as part of the club and he tells us why. We also talk about what he wants as his legacy with Sporting KC.

It wasn't pretty. Sporting KC have plenty to fine-tine and sharpen up as they get into the flow of the season. But earning a point on the road against a strong Houston Dynamo side is actually quite a nice result to kick off 2024.

The rust was the heaviest when SKC tried to play out from the back. Too many poor passes and bad touches gave Houston multiple chances in the first half. The Dynamo controlled possession and nearly every stat you can think of.

The attacking core struggled all game. Pulido let a couple chances go by the wayside. Even the substitutes failed to make a real impact on the game.

Was Erik Thommy's goal lucky, or all skill?

Next up is the Philadelphia Union. Robert says Jim Curtain and the Union are what we WISH Sporting KC would be.

A rough week for the Comets with an overtime loss versus the  Chihuahua Savage. Kansas City held them to just two goals in regulation but a quick overtime counter and the Comets only earned a single point at home.

Historically the Comets have not been good in overtime games. Stats provided by the KC Soccer Journal's Mike Kuhn:

The same team that was the best in the West most of the season. The same team that gave us a legendary run and some of the most fun we've ever had beating STL in the playoffs.

So did they really need to spend millions this offseason? Only time will tell.

Is there anything we can learn from this preseason? Impossible to say with limited access. But two youngsters have shown promise. Alenis Vargas and Stephen Afrifa did well to show Vermes they can contribute this season. Willy Agada also put in six goals over the five games.
