Psychologist and psychotherapist Carl Rogers coined 'psychological safety' back in the 1950s in the context of establishing the conditions necessary to foster an individual's creativity.
When we feel comfortable expressing our opinions or concerns, challenging the status quo, and working through disagreements together, it helps us to believe that we can take risks without being shamed or judged.
