Keeping Score Love Note Series: Bite-sized episodes with the purpose of connection and inspiration.
This Love Note is a reflection on last week's episode "We brought our happiness to the adventure." featuring, guest, Bart Potenza. My conversations with Bart have given me so much hope and joy. They've also inspired me to think more about how I can live with as much positivity, joy, and enthusiasm as he does. Bart is totally #goals, but one thing I've learned from him is that we can be our own #goals too.
What are you doing today that will benefit you later?

It turns out that you have a better chance of being hit by lightning than winning the Powerball. Bart Potenza won the lottery not once, but 3 different times. While none of these wins were millions, they were substantial amounts of money that helped him and his life-partner, Joy, build their vegan restaurant empire Candle Cafe. With 83 years of life under his belt, Bart shares with me his view and wisdom on luck, taking chances, the power of manifestation, and how 33 years of veganism has altered his life.

This Love Note celebrates just how far we've come! 2020 has been intense, but if you're reading this right now, you're pretty damn resilient. I took a moment to reflect and pause on who I've become in the past 6 months. And of course, there's a challenge for you to do the same.

If you were living in New York City around 2016 there's a good chance you've seen the work of Matthew Chavez. If you weren't, then perhaps you've heard of what he's done.
His participatory display of Post-Its in the New York City Subway went viral and showed up across the globe. Since then, Matt has written two books on his work and is featured in Forbes, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and more. Matt and I discuss how he came to do this work, his process, what he's learned, community efforts, what comes next, and what to consider when it comes to purpose.

This Love Note is on un-learning. I wanted to expand a little bit on our last Love Note: The Argument for Changing our Minds. I've found that un-learning seems to be one of the catalysts to get there. It's not easy though, un-learning anything is likely to rattle who we are to the core, usually because it impacts our way of being in other areas. Despite the discomfort, it's extremely freeing to let go of how we think we should be, and instead just be who we are.

For Ruben Hughes, life is for the taking. Ruben is an art director and photographer currently based in Copenhagen. He's also my friend, we met some years back. I've always admired his design skills - check him out @rubenhughes on Instagram, but more than anything I've been inspired by how he pushes himself to be better, how he beats to his own drum, and that he has the ability to find beauty in just about anything. In this conversation he shares about how he's created a life that he loves.

This Love Note is on the concept of changing our mind. It feels like the past few months have been filled every type of change. While consistency, particularly when it comes to how we view ourselves and the world around us, is something humans need and desire, there's also an argument for why it's ok to normalize changing our minds. When was the last time you changed your mind?

This Love Note addresses the current climate we're facing in the United States. In addition to the coronavirus, this country suffers from another virus; racism. It's insidious. While I don't have the answers, I do know that silence just simply doesn't work. Any change will comes from the compassion that we honor above everything else. It's my hope that you can listen to my experience with an open heart. I'm open to conversation, that's the only way we get anywhere, so don't hesitate to reach out. I can promise you that I'll listen with an open heart as well.
May this Love Note honor the lives of #Breonna Taylor, #Tony McDade, #Ahmaud Arbery, and #George Floyd.

This Love Note is on being present. It's something that has been notoriously hard for me. I just can't seem to silence my brain. I'll save you the Google search, here's what I've tried that's been easy to implement and has truly made a noticeable difference. What are you doing to stay present?

The beginning of FM Ellis' story is one that mirrors that of so many others. Thankfully, she was able to make it to the other side of her trauma. After being sexually abused at the age of 7, her life spiraled out of control. In her memoir, My Life as a Lemon, she details just how deep that spiral actually was. In our conversation, Faye gives me some insight on how she set herself free and how we can create a world for others to do the same.
You can purchase her book on Amazon.
If you have been impacted or you’re currently being impacted by sexual abuse (or any abuse for that matter) please get help. Call 800.656.HOPE and know that I am always here if you need someone to listen.
