Hey and welcome to a very special evening edition of Seven Figure Business Secrets!

 

Yeah so I just wanted to quickly talk to you. I don’t know why today but I suddenly remembered one of my favourite parts, or least favourite parts, about working in corporate life.

 

Actually, I know why I remembered it, it was I was chatting to a few people today and basically their whole last few days, their whole last few days, and we’re talking 10, 12-hour days, has been spent tied up in presentations and meetings.

 

And by their own admission, what these are, they’re going to be a talking shop, and yeah, they might get one or two things done, but the vast majority of 30 hours investment of their time and there’s what, five of them, plus all these other people, is going to be a very poor output.

 

And very little is going to get done.

 

And they’re all very frustrated about it.

 

And yeah, and annoyed.

 

But, that’s what corporate life is about.

 

The Corporate Way

 

And I remember, my days, there were some weeks, aw, you’d spend maybe half your week doing presentations and pulling together data and, you know, all this stuff and then you’d sit for hours and hours in conference rooms and meetings and having a discussion about this and that, and then you’d realise that some of the p...

 

I used to be amazed at how some of the most successful entrepreneurs are ex-corporate. I thought entrepreneurs were risk-taking highly creative types, nothing like us corporate people. However I was wrong and when I finally understood it, it made complete sense.

As you can probably see, yeah it might be a freeway, but I’m certainly not moving very fast.

Yeah, I woke up this morning, and you know the way sometimes you wake up and things aren’t quite right and it takes you about maybe five or 10 minutes to finally put your finger on it?

That Gnawing Feeling

 

I woke up this morning, and basically I had a … just something was gnawing at me, something – I was just nervous is probably the right feeling or the right description of the feeling.

Something was just not right, and just as I was getting into the car it finally dawned on me what it is.

 

It’s basically, I’m coming to a juncture at my business, and what it is, you know I’ve got the new product coming out, which is zero to cash in six weeks,

 

Most employees are taking an incredibly risky gamble. They’re placing all their bets on black – not good.

Good morning, and welcome to a start-of-the-week edition of 7-Figure Business Secrets!

 

Morning, yes, Monday morning here.

Weekend over but, yeah, a really cool weekend actually.

I hope your weekend was good too.

 

So what did I get up to?

My Weekend

 

Yeah, I had a very family-orientated weekend.

 

Not for a change, normally are, but this one here, unfortunately my wife’s aunt is, yeah, not very well. She’s actually on her way out unfortunately, so she disappeared on Saturday over to the other side of Ireland with her parents to go and visit her, which left me alone with the three kids for a Saturday.

 

So the poor kids, yeah, they had typical Dad Saturday.

 

So Dad Saturday is, yeah, everything is by the timer, so picking up and dropping off from dancing and football and everything.

 

And then the worst thing about Saturday for the kids when Dad’s around, is Saturday is always “Souper Saturday”.

 

So no matter what happens, they get a soup.

It’s normally whatever’s left over, whether it’s, yeah, bits of veg or bits of chicken, all gets dumped into the pot.

Stir it around, bit of curry powder, whatever it is, and it comes out.

 

And I think it’s great, but the kids are always at me about, “Oh soup, oh Dad, this is terrible.”

 

But the best thing for the kids about when Dad’s in charge is...

This happens to me all the time. I definitely should be doing this more often.

Well, it’s actually cold outside, but it’s really cool because I’m able to wear my shades today.

 

You’ll see it’s coming in every now and again, we’ve got a very bright sun here, a blue sky, and an excuse for me to wear my cool shades.

 

I think they make me look cool, my kids don’t think so at all.

 

When Your Creativity Is Firing

 

But anyway, what I want to talk to you about today, yeah really cool.

 

About… today’s Tuesday, so Sunday, I had an amazing hike, we actually went up a mountain not far from here with my cub scout pack.

 

So we had what, 22 kids going up the side of the mountain in the misty rain and into the clouds, and it was all very cool.

 

They had a laugh. We had a laugh.

 

My leg’s still a little bit sore from it, but here’s the thing:

 

Yesterday, I had an absolutely amazing day of work.

 

Basically, I was working with a client, and over the course of the day, we came up with not one, two, three, but seven, seven different strategies to actually get a whole pile of new clients.

 

Actually, two of the strategies are new clients, and five are actually to re-engage their existing clients.

 

And those seven ideas are worth seven figures to this company,

So…I screwed up.  Just when everything seemed to be going OK…

Okay, I’ve got a big confession to make.

Big confession to make, but we’ll come to that slightly later.

 

Interesting thing happened yesterday, well actually happened about two weeks ago.

 

I was looking at my website, because my website wasn’t quite converting the way it should have been.

I wasn’t getting as many email addresses, or hits as a lot of other sites do.

 

What I Did Wrong

 

So, I was thinking to myself, “Oh, what could be wrong? What could be wrong here?”

 

And I think I spotted it.

 

So anyway, yesterday I went through and re-designed the website and everything.

 

But, you know the way I’m always banging on about positioning, and it’s really important that you figure out your place in the world, and how you relate to your customers, and how you’re different from everyone else?

 

And a lot of that is about not just positioning yourself as I am the be-all-and-end-all in this big huge space.

 

But actually niche down and say, “Do you know what, I don’t know a lot about loads of stuff, but wow I know a lot about this tiny little niche and I am the world expert in it.”

 

Well, that’s exactly what I did wrong.

Niching Down

 

If you’re setting up a business it’s really important that you’ve got a very good idea of who it is you’re trying to help, because remember there’s like billions and billions of people in the world.

When I started my first business I thought it was like learning to ride a bicycle, a few wobbles and eventually I’d get the hang of it. But here’s what I didn’t realise.

Hey and welcome to Seven Figure Business Secrets, how are you guys?

Yes, so how are you?

 

Yeah, this is a bit of an unusual Seven Figure Secrets Podcast for me, basically I’ve been doing a bit of thinking and as usual, I’m one of these … you know, it helps me when I talk.

 

And actually, it’d really help me talk this one out to you because it’s actually about, I suppose, how I first got into business and how I exited my corporate job.

 

And I was just thinking through there today about why on earth did I do it and what drove me and yeah, what was my rationale for it and if I was to look back at myself, you know, it’s almost 16 years ago to the day when, I suppose, handed in my first ever resignation, why I did it and what would I say to myself if I was to be able to have a chat with my 27-year-old self back then.

 

And yeah, I just wanted to share my thoughts and I suppose, clarify my thinking because something interesting was coming out of it, at least to myself, at least it was helping me figure out why I took, I suppose, that brave move back then and I suppose if I was to do it now, there’s definitely a few things I would do differently.

Destined For More

 

So if I take you back to when it all happened and it was basically, I was working for a company called Visteon and I had my team and things were going really well.

 

And yeah,

Sometimes I have to pinch myself. My lifestyle now is world’s away from working in corporate.

Hey, and welcome to the pre-blizzard edition of Seven Figure Business Secrets.

 

Hey, yeah so, it’s cold here.

It’s cold.

 

You know the way I keep going on about Ireland is rainy and never too cold?

I lied.

 

Look. It’s freezing, absolutely freezing.

 

We have lots of snow at the moment, so the whole country is on lockdown, and they’ve put a code red warning, and basically even the leader of the country, the prime minister, has been on to say, “At 4 o’clock today, no one is to go out.”

 

It’s all very exciting here.

 

What it means is I get to work from my kitchen table, which actually on a Thursday is pretty much what I do anyway, so no travelling to the office today, and yeah, I get to spend a lot of time with the kids.

 

The great thing about a red weather warning is all the schools shut down, too, so they’re sitting at home, and yes, it’s just really cool, but yeah, so this is my life this morning.

 

Look, I’m … there they are.

They’re out, see the two of them, that’s my little baby and my middle child making snowmen and yeah, basically throwing snowballs everywhere.

 

I Get To Choose

 

But it did sort of highlight back again that one of the huge benefits of actually working for yourself is that, whether the country went down on complete shutdown or...

But yeah, as you can see there’s a lot of sun here this morning. It’s one of those mornings where, you know when you’re just delighted to be alive?

I pulled up the blinds this morning, and looked straight out, and in the dim, barely awake state, and all I remember is still, it’s in my mind, is looking out and …

Yeah I live across the road from the sea, the Irish Sea now,  it’s a little bit chilly, don’t get excited by it … but there on the sea were about 12, 13 fishing boats just bobbing up and down, going back and forward, they’re shell fishing.

The sun just coming up.

Lovely sort of bright orange sun, and then just amazing sort of sky that was just hinting at being a deep blue.

Yeah, just had to stop for a second, look at it and … Yeah just thank God for just being alive.

It was just so amazing and then the morning got better, quick shower and everything.
