  • Is Your Soil Malnourished?

How do plants survive in contaminated soil? They don't. They get sick and die if the soil is contaminated or malnourished...

What about you? Is your soil malnourished, or contaminated? Let’s just say that  your soul is equivalent to soil;  are you psychologically contaminated? Are you hurting, depressed, angry, filled with anxiety? Are you psychically broken? Is your life a mess? If you are nodding your head yes, then I’d encourage you to seek help immediately. Why waste another moment in that contaminated soil! Would you take better care of a tree or a plant if it was rotting away in soil that was damaged? Aren’t you worth more than a plant?

How did the soil of your life become contaminated in the first place? These are hard questions to answer, so I’d say to you to seek a professional mental health expert. Coaching is one thing, but therapy is essential when our soul is damaged.

“”To wish you were someone else is to waste the person you are.”

If you struggle with any of these things, your "soil" or soul might be malnourished.... get some nourishment starting today. Don’t waste another second!

  • What Qualifies You

I was asked one day, “What qualifies you to be a personal and professional growth coach?”  I was actually grateful for the question, because even though it might have been perceived as a challenge, it really wasn’t. She actually might have been thinking about how she might want to hire me, or invite me to speak at her organization or one of her upcoming events. She was vetting me. Inquiring about my credentials. She really wanted to know what qualifies me over somebody else. I had to answer her question that my degree in psychology and earning a license to be a marriage and family therapist provides me with the education and experience to really make those psycho-educational concepts work in the area of personal growth, and my 30+ years in business afford me with the background to be an effective coach for professional growth. I’ve prepared myself for these types of inquiries and its with great privilege to help other achieve their growth goals. The lesson is, use your experiences to your advantage. Don’t let a simple question of “what qualifies you’ deter you from answering confidently! You are ready. You are qualified….and if not, learn, listen, study and practice to be at that level you desire to be.

  • Stress and Work

I have friends and colleagues who are at the top of their game in major market business, who occasionally come to me for coaching,  knowing that I’m also a therapist. They’ll share with me their concerns in their work environment – and it’s interesting to note that it’s not always about something functional in the business. Consultants always talk about how to make your business grow, how to make it thrive, how to successfully make a ton of money. Great! I too can give you checklists, to do lists, navigate how to get into a networking group, or how to make a sales call and things like that; just about anyone these days can do that. But the reality is, when you start experiencing issues that are stressors and conflicts with others; it all comes down to how we think; how we feel; which affects how we behave; which is all on personal. So when I say that I promote perpetual personal and professional growth – they go hand in hand. When you are having problems at work, it’s helpful to step back and see what you are projecting on to the person you are having an issue with. And what are they projecting onto you, and how is this affected by something going on with you emotionally? Seek help and understanding for those issues that can’t be resolved with another check list or scripted sales call.

  • Somebody Else Already Did That

I’m a visionary and an entrepreneur. I don’t let it stop me if somebody else has “already done that”. For example: I’m creating a series on the Seasons of Life. I teach about personal and professional growth, through cultivating; planting seeds;  branching out and all of these metaphors that I just love! The thing is that, of course other people have talked about this concept of growth. Perhaps maybe my take on it will be similar to somebody else’s – but the fact of the matter is,  the branding “growth” goes well with my last name, Orchard. I can use the metaphors and ideas and the concepts all day long. Does it mean that I invented “growth” and if somebody tried to use the word growth in some of their presentations or marketing plan that I should have some sort of claim to that or compare myself to them? No. Does it mean that I should stop doing what I’m doing because somebody else used the word growth or planting seeds, or used a tree in their logo? No.  Just do it better or be a little different, or be a little creative or capitalize on the fact that if someone else can find success doing what they love, you can too! If you’re passionate about it, who cares if somebody else did it. Don’t compare yourself to others. Be authentically you and continue to grow, because growth is your purpose.

  • Change vs Growth

I used to use the term “Change Agent” when I described myself and what I do. I thought about using the term “Growth Agent”, but there is too much controversy around the term growth agent when talking about chemicals, biological research, and nutrition, so I won’t use that, but I am an Agent of Growth.

So let me ask you this question, do you really feel as though you need to change? Or is it that you really need to grow? There is a big difference between change and growth. A plant might change its colors with the seasons, but what it is ultimately doing is growing. Growing into something new, refined, evolved.

So what are you doing? Are you growing? Are you evolving? Or do you really need to change? Think about that. Is it change that you need, or growth? And are they the same? There can be a minor difference in that whole philosophy.

“There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them. But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there. ~Paulo Coelho

  • A Solid Foundation

In order to grow, everything needs a solid foundation. Everything in life needs a solid foundation; when you’re putting together a building or a home, you need a solid foundation which is a concrete slab,  the solid foundation for the structure. When you’re putting on your clothes for your day, you need a solid foundation which might be your shoes, or the dress or suit that you are going to wear with which you accessorize by adding jewelry. When you go for a college education, you will have a solid foundation in a field of study for a specific degree.

When you are planting a garden, you need a solid foundation. The solid foundation in a garden, or an orchard or anything that grows from the ground is, the soil.

So in your personal or professional growth, you need a solid foundation. So, your solid foundation is your soul.  What’s in your soul?  What do you believe in; stand for; are accountable to? How do you talk and think about yourself? How do you identify your solid foundation? Nibble on that today…

  • How to be a Great Leader

This is Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth.  Now is the time to define your life roles. You may have leadership roles in relation to your profession, family, community, or other areas in your life. Are people born or destined to become great leaders? Or is a leader developed over a lifetime of experiences? When you motivate your team, whether it is at work, your sport, your family or your community, you exhibit great leadership ability.

So, what makes a great leader? When I was thirteen years old, I joined a cheerleading squad and remember feeling like the ‘odd man out’. The coach for the team had her favorites and paid little attention to those of us she didn’t consider worthy of her attention. It caused me to feel unimportant and insignificant. The following season, I signed up to be a coach because I didn’t want anyone on a cheer squad to feel unmotivated or insignificant. So, at age 14, I began develop leadership skills to motivate, encourage and inspire my team.

Was I born to lead or did I develop leadership abilities? In my case, I believe it was both. I was determined to lead a team of cheerleaders to be the best squad they could be. I have continued to lead by coaching; in business, in relationships, in consulting and in my community!

What does being a great leader look like? They have the ability to inspire!

  • Searching for a Miracle

This is Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth.

When I became ill with heart problems, I didn’t even know where to begin. But, one thing I knew for sure, despite the depression that came along with the disease, I wasn’t going to give up or become a victim. I researched my heart condition and learned as much as I could about it. I took to my Bible and other educational resources on ‘spirit’ as I could to gain insight. I asked questions, sought answers and support from others who had been through something similar. And then, I went back to Grad School to earn my Masters Degree in Psychology. None of what I do now happened overnight. It was and still is and ongoing process. But I know one thing for sure, I am a miracle and so are you.

Jim Rohn spoke about learning like this: “Learning is the beginning of wealth. Learning is the beginning of health. Learning is the beginning of spirituality. Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins.”

Want a miracle to happen in your life? Continue to learn!

  • Learning is Fun

This is Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth.

What is your learning style? There are many assessments that can help determine what our best learning style is. We learn best when we stimulate several senses at once. According to many theorists, there are four learning styles: Visual learning, Auditory learning, Read/write learning, and Kinesthetic learning. These are learning styles that use our senses: seeing, hearing, and touching. It is a good idea to understand our best learning style. Imagine if you were forced to read and write in a classroom setting, or work setting – but your most effective style of learning was hands on practice or listening to a lecture. Perhaps you learn best when you listen to an audio lecture while reading along.

Pay attention to how you learn and implement that in your process regularly. When I invite a client to learn something new every day in order to grow, I always investigate the method with which they learn best. Then, I emphasize that in order to enjoy the learning experience, they need to employ that method. I would never ask you to just “read a book”, if you learned better from interaction. Now, if you love to read, I would definitely encourage you to read something other than a romance novel!

Learning can be fun when we do it in a way that comes natural to us!
