Kes Talks

Jesus is returning. Satan will be defeated once and for all. But what power does he have now? How should Christians think of him and his army of evil demons. Can they possess us? Do they have influence over us? Can we be cursed? How do we stand firm against him? It is in anticipating the final Day of the Lord that we find many of our encouraging answers.

The coming of Jesus – and especially his death and resurrection – mark a turning point in the fight against the evil forces. What actually was achieved at Calvary and how does it make a difference today to our worship, to our fight against temptation and to our evangelism?

We often wonder whether God is on our side. But the Bible question turns things around. It asks whether we are on the Lord’s side! God is both a fighter and a victor. Much of the Old Testament depicts this truth, not just in abstract terms, but in real flesh and blood fighting. Understanding these realities even makes sense of some of the hardest passages.

We're a bit embarrassed by all the fighting in the Bible. Yet the Lord reveals himself as the Lord of Armies ('Hosts'). Reading the Bible through the lens of spiritual warfare will unlock its deep realities, helping us: pursue holiness; deepen our prayer lives; give us courage for evangelism and mission; and instil in us a deep sense of expectation that Jesus the Victor will return and make all things right. Every moment finds every Christian in a spiritual battle whether we realise it or not. We will begin to explore this Bible theme and find how – right from the very beginning – the victory against the forces of evil is assured. Christians can look at the mountains differently as a result. Find out why!

At a Scripture Union camp in 1987 I was shown a six box outline of the Bible. Box 1 - Creation, Box 2 - Sin, Box 3 - Judgement, Box 4 - The Cross, Box 5 - The Resurrection and Box 6 - The Choice. That outline gave me a wonderful framework for speaking about my faith, answering questions, leading people to Christ and even understanding Christian marriage! Come and see how these six pictures enable us to be so much clearer as we seek to communicate what the Bible says about God and about man. Please bring pens and paper, it will be great fun!

What does it mean to let the gospel tell the gospel? There are so many ways of doing evangelism and talking about Jesus, but surely the best way is to go through the books God has given us about his Son. Amazingly in Mark's Gospel three words give us the code on the whole book, so if we've got those three words we really can feel equipped to go through Mark with younger Christians and non- Christians. Bring three different coloured highlighters and a copy of Mark's Gospel and we'll have a wonderful time together.

I think 2 Corinthians 4 verses 1 to 6 is the most important passage on evangelism in the Bible. As we look at it, it will become evident why it gives us what we need for Biblically balanced evangelism. We must understand what God calls us to do (and do it faithfully) and we must leave to God what only he can do. If we don't see this balance, it's catastrophic doctrinally and pastorally. If we do, evangelism becomes a glorious privilege.

The Bible teaches us that telling others the gospel is both joyful and hard. How do we keep our motivation personally and corporately high, so that evangelism doesn't slip off the agenda? So it's how we keep the great truths of grace, godliness and eternity in our hearts, whilst also being aware of what it is that stops us speaking and how we fight those battles. In our culture and around the world, there is increasing polarisation. It’s hard to find the middle ground. People find their identity in strongly held views, and we only listen to people we already agree with. Debate has become a shouting match.

And that’s not just in our culture. This also affects the church and how we relate to one another.

How can we, as God’s children, live faithfully in an age of division.

Songs help our hearts re- tell the victory our God won for us (v1-12). We look back and sing that we had a dreaded enemy but our warrior God fought for us and won a complete victory. (cf Heb 2.14-15, Col 2.15). But the song points forward to what God will do (v13- 18): he will lovingly guide on the journey ahead to bring his children home to himself (v13). This is our hope and song as we return to normal days and homes.
